A cordless-tool battery is compatible only when the tool maker supports that battery platform and exact tool model. A matching voltage label or connector shape alone is not enough. Amp-hours (Ah) describe capacity, not fit; before buying, check the tool’s manual, platform name, charger support, and the manufacturer’s compatibility list.
What determines whether a battery works in a cordless tool?
Compatibility involves more than one specification. Voltage identifies an electrical class, while the battery shoe, terminals, platform electronics, and the tool’s design affect fit and operation. The charger is another separate check: a battery that works in a tool is not automatically supported by every charger.

Start with the exact tool model and the platform name printed on the tool or specified in its manual. Then confirm the proposed battery and charger against the manufacturer’s documentation. Do not infer cross-brand compatibility from a similar voltage marking, a matching connector, or a battery that appears to slide into place.

What do voltage and amp-hours tell you?
Voltage identifies the required system, not universal fit
A tool’s voltage requirement is useful for narrowing down eligible batteries, but it does not establish that another brand’s battery—or even every battery from the same brand—will fit and operate correctly. Makita U.S.A. says batteries are compatible within their respective platforms: “LXT batteries are compatible only with LXT products.” See its cordless-tool FAQ for the platform guidance.

- Allows for use of 20V MAX* Lithium Ion batteries in most 18V DEWALT tools
- Requires use of 20V MAX* DEWALT charger
- Do not use with premium DEWALT batteries in DC970 or DC759 tools
- This Adapter will not work with 20V/60V FLEXVOLT Batteries
- The DCA1820 adapter is compatible with the following batteries only: 1.5 Ah, 2.0 Ah, 3.0 Ah, 4.0 Ah, and 5.0 Ah XR
Likewise, Bosch’s AMPShare is a defined multi-brand alliance, not a general battery standard. Bosch says AMPShare batteries and chargers work with Bosch 18V tools and products from participating alliance brands. That scope does not make every Bosch battery family or every 18V product interchangeable. Check the Bosch AMPShare compatibility information.
Amp-hours describe capacity, not compatibility
Ah is a battery-capacity rating. A higher Ah rating can mean more stored capacity, but it does not confirm that a pack fits a tool, is supported by its electronics, or is suitable for its charger. Nor does Ah alone tell you how much runtime you will get: that depends on the tool and conditions of use, and the manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish a universal runtime multiplier for each increase in Ah.

When choosing among batteries already listed as compatible, consider capacity alongside power suitability, cooling, and size. Bosch names all four as battery-selection factors in its battery-selection guidance. A larger pack can also affect the tool’s balance and access in tight spaces.

No. A connector’s shape is only one part of the interface. Platform design and manufacturer support determine whether the pack and tool are intended to work together. The sources cited here do not establish a universal connector standard, nor do they provide a basis for rewiring or identifying terminals. Use the exact model compatibility list instead of experimenting with a pack that merely appears to fit.

When can an adapter or variable-voltage battery work?
Adapters have model-specific limits
An adapter can support a particular pairing without making all batteries and tools interchangeable. DEWALT describes its DCA1820 as an adapter for using 20V batteries with most DEWALT 18V tools, but “most” is not “all.” Its compatibility article, updated December 16, 2025, lists exceptions and battery cautions; use that model-specific list before relying on the adapter. The DCA1820 product page describes its intended use.
Confirm the exact tool and battery models and read any stated restrictions. A pack may physically connect through an adapter yet fail to operate in an excluded tool. Do not assume an adapter preserves every protection or warranty condition; verify those points with the manufacturer.

- If the 18 v Lithium-ion Battery stop working, use the adapter compatible with Dewalt 18v or 20 v battery as power replacement. This battery adapter built-in battery lock and Protection electrical board (PCBA).
Some batteries change voltage by design
DEWALT’s FLEXVOLT system is a vendor-specific example: DEWALT says its FLEXVOLT batteries switch voltage for compatible tools, including 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools. This designed behavior does not mean that ordinary batteries can be used across voltage classes. Check the FLEXVOLT product information and the compatibility guidance for the specific tool.

How to check a battery before buying
- Identify the tool. Record the exact model number and the battery platform named on the tool or in its manual.
- Check the maker’s compatibility list. Confirm that the proposed battery is listed for that tool; do not rely on voltage or appearance alone.
- Verify the charger separately. Check that the charger model supports the battery platform and pack.
- Review pack limits. Look for stated restrictions involving capacity, size, power, cooling, or other tool-specific requirements.
- Check every adapter pairing. If using an adapter, verify the exact tool and battery models against the adapter maker’s current list, including exceptions and cautions.
- Ask the manufacturer if the pairing is unclear. If the manual and compatibility list do not confirm it, get confirmation rather than testing an unsupported combination.
