There is no dependable visual or writing-style clue that proves a review or influencer recommendation was made with artificial intelligence. The strongest approach is to combine several checks: look for an AI or synthetic-media label, inspect available Content Credentials, read the sponsorship or affiliate disclosure, test whether the creator shows evidence of actually using the product, and verify important claims against independent documentation or testing. AI-detector scores can add context, but they cannot establish authorship or deception on their own.
Use the process below to reach a confidence assessment rather than a forced human-versus-AI verdict. Provenance can describe how media was created and edited; it cannot certify that a product works as claimed or that the person recommending it used it.

Why a review cannot be judged by style alone
AI writing, voice cloning, synthetic presenters and AI-assisted editing can be blended with ordinary human work. A person may draft a script with an AI tool, film their own hands testing a device, and edit the footage with automated features. Another account may use a synthetic avatar to read a script supplied by a human. A polished delivery, repetitive wording or an unusual voice therefore does not identify who made the recommendation.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Three questions must be kept separate:
- How was the content made? It may be entirely human, AI-assisted, or fully synthetic.
- Is there a commercial relationship? The creator may have received payment, a free product, employment benefits, or another material connection.
- Is the recommendation truthful? The creator may or may not have used the product and may or may not support the claims being made.
A disclosure can answer one question without answering the others. An “AI-generated” label tells you about production, not whether the product performs well. A sponsorship disclosure tells you about a relationship, not whether AI was involved. A human-looking video does not prove that the speaker handled the product.

The six-check sequence
Work through these checks in order. Save screenshots, links or notes for claims that matter to your purchase, especially claims about safety, health, durability, battery life or measurable performance.
1. Look for an explicit AI or synthetic-media label
Check the video, image, caption, description, comments supplied by the creator, and any platform information panel. Look for terms such as AI-generated, altered, synthetic, virtual influencer or equivalent wording. Labels may apply to the whole item or only to a face, voice, background, translation or other segment.
The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) User Experience Guidance for Implementers, specification 2.0, gives a plain-language example: “This {TYPE} was completely AI-generated.” A label that says an item was completely generated is stronger than a notice that only says it was edited or that an AI feature was used. Read the scope instead of treating every label as proof of the same thing.
An absent label is not evidence that no AI was used. Labeling practices differ by service, file type and uploader, and metadata can be removed during copying or re-encoding. Treat a label as positive evidence about the declared production method, not as a complete authenticity certificate.
2. Inspect Content Credentials or other provenance information
If the platform or downloadable file exposes Content Credentials, open them and review the recorded creator identity, creation event, edits and AI-related actions. Provenance is most useful when it forms a continuous history from capture through publication rather than a single unexplained claim.
- Creator or signer: note the identity attached to the credential and whether it matches the account publishing the review.
- Creation event: check when and with what type of tool the item was first recorded.
- Edit history: look for retouching, compositing, voice changes, scene replacement or other transformations.
- AI actions: identify whether generation, enhancement, translation or removal tools were recorded.
Credentials improve traceability, but they are not a truth meter. They do not establish that the creator is honest, that the named person appears in the footage, that a measurement was performed correctly, or that a product delivers the advertised result. A clean provenance record can coexist with an exaggerated claim, while a missing record can result from ordinary file conversion rather than fraud.

3. Separate AI production from sponsorship and other material connections
Read the disclosure for payment, free or discounted products, employment, personal relationships, affiliate compensation or other benefits. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says material connections that could affect how people evaluate an endorsement should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously. Its guidance emphasizes that the disclosure should be easy to notice and understand, not hidden behind an obscure link or buried among unrelated tags.
The FTC’s Endorsement Guides were revised in 2023 to address fake reviews, virtual influencers, clear-and-conspicuous disclosure and responsibilities shared by advertisers, endorsers and intermediaries. A recommendation can therefore be made by a real person and still require a commercial disclosure. Conversely, an AI-generated presenter can be presented without a commercial relationship; the production method and the financial relationship remain separate checks.
Look for the disclosure where a viewer would see the recommendation: in the spoken introduction, on-screen text, caption or description. A vague phrase such as “thanks to our partner” may not explain whether the creator was paid, received the product, or earns a commission. Record exactly what is disclosed and what is not.
4. Test whether the experience claim shows real use
Do not ask only whether the video looks realistic. Ask what observations would have required the creator to possess and use the product. Stronger evidence usually includes:
- specific setup details, model or configuration information and the conditions of a test;
- observations that distinguish the product from its published specification, such as a limitation, defect or inconvenient step;
- original photos, screen recordings, measurements or dated demonstrations that fit the described test;
- an explanation of how long the product was used and what was not tested;
- claims that remain consistent when the creator discusses the product elsewhere.
Generic praise, a list of manufacturer specifications and perfectly smooth narration do not demonstrate hands-on use. Nor does a single close-up prove that the presenter completed every test described in the script. The FTC’s endorsement guidance says an endorser must reflect an honest opinion, and its review guidance focuses on truthful representations of experience. If a creator claims to have used a product, look for details that would be difficult to supply without that experience.
5. Corroborate important claims
Compare specifications with the manufacturer’s documentation, then check measurements, defects and performance claims against independent testing and several unrelated reviewers. Give more weight to sources that disclose their method, conditions and limitations than to a large number of near-identical summaries.

Separate facts that can be checked from opinions that cannot. A stated weight, connector, warranty term or battery capacity can often be verified in a manual or specification sheet. A claim that a product “feels premium” is a judgment; it becomes more useful when the creator explains the materials, controls or comparison behind it. If two reviews disagree, identify whether they used different versions, settings, workloads or environments before deciding that one is false.
6. Use automated detectors only as supporting evidence
Text, image, voice and video detectors can produce both false positives and false negatives. Human writing may be flagged because it is formulaic, while generated material may pass because it was edited, translated or lightly paraphrased. Compression, background noise, subtitles and platform processing can also affect results.
Run a detector only after the preceding checks, and treat its output as one uncertain signal. A score does not prove who authored a script, whether a voice was cloned, whether a face is synthetic, or whether a product claim is deceptive. Official guidance from the FTC and C2PA emphasizes disclosure, provenance and truthful experience checks rather than a detector threshold that would settle the question.

An explicit label is a statement about the content’s production or alteration. Its value depends on its wording and scope.
| Label or record | What it can indicate | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| “Completely AI-generated” | The publisher declares that the item was generated rather than captured as ordinary camera or microphone footage. | That the product claims are accurate, that the account owner is identified correctly, or that no human supplied the script. |
| “Altered” or equivalent | Some part of the media was changed, potentially with AI or conventional editing. | Which statements are affected, whether the review is sponsored, or whether the underlying experience occurred. |
| Content Credentials | A recorded chain of creator, creation event, edits and AI-related actions, when available and intact. | Truthfulness of the review, competence of the test, identity of every person shown, or product performance. |
| No label or credentials | Only that no usable declaration is visible in the material you can inspect. | That the work was entirely human-made or free from synthetic manipulation. |
How to judge whether the creator really used the product
Experience claims deserve their own audit because a human account can still repeat a script without testing the item. Build a short evidence trail while watching.
Check the test conditions
Note the exact model, software version, accessories, settings, environment and duration described. A battery-life claim without screen brightness, workload or network conditions is difficult to compare. A camera sample without lens, lighting or processing details may not support a broad quality conclusion. Missing conditions do not prove fabrication, but they reduce confidence in the number.

Look for limitations and negative findings
Real use often reveals trade-offs: heat, noise, setup friction, compatibility limits, maintenance or a feature that works only in a narrow situation. A review that contains no limitations is not automatically synthetic, yet an entirely promotional script provides less evidence of independent experience than one that explains what failed or disappointed the tester.
Match the physical and chronological details
Check whether the product shown has the same ports, controls, packaging and firmware described. Watch for continuity errors, impossible reflections, changing labels or a voice that does not match the speaker’s mouth and breathing. These clues can justify further checking, but none is conclusive by itself; ordinary editing, replacement units and platform compression can create similar artifacts.
Ask whether the account has a consistent history
Compare the creator’s terminology, testing habits and conclusions across other work. Sudden changes in voice, face, biography, location or technical depth may indicate a rebrand, outsourcing or synthetic production. They do not by themselves prove deception. Consistency is corroboration, not authentication.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Comparing two reviews of the same product
When choosing between reviews, score the evidence on the same dimensions rather than rewarding the more polished presentation.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Disclosure quality | Is payment, gifting, employment, affiliation or another material connection stated clearly where viewers will notice it? |
| Provenance availability | Are Content Credentials or an equivalent production history available, and do they match the published account? |
| Evidence of use | Does the creator show original setup, operation, measurements, limitations and duration? |
| Specificity and conditions | Are model, settings, workload, environment and test method identified? |
| Independence | Does the review explain trade-offs and failures instead of repeating only marketing language? |
| Corroboration | Do documentation and unrelated testers support the important specifications and results? |
| Cross-work consistency | Do claims, terminology and conclusions remain coherent across the creator’s other material? |
The review with the better score is not guaranteed to be true. It simply gives you more independently checkable reasons to trust a particular claim.

A practical confidence framework
After completing the checks, write a conclusion that preserves uncertainty. For example:
Best Value
- Higher confidence in the production disclosure: an explicit label is present and provenance records agree with it.
- Moderate confidence in hands-on use: the creator supplies specific conditions, original evidence and limitations, but no independent observer confirms the test.
- Low confidence in a performance claim: the claim is broad, conditions are missing and unrelated testing does not reproduce it.
- Unresolved: the account provides little provenance or disclosure, yet the available material is insufficient to prove fabrication.
Keep these judgments separate. You can have high confidence that a video was AI-generated, moderate confidence that a human supplied the product observations, and low confidence that the advertised result is accurate. That is more informative than labeling the entire review simply “real” or “fake.”
FTC rules and responsibilities
The FTC’s Endorsement Guides state that endorsements should reflect the endorser’s honest opinion and that material connections affecting how consumers evaluate an endorsement should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously. The agency’s influencer guidance says: “As an influencer, it’s your responsibility to make these disclosures, to be familiar with the Endorsement Guides, and to comply with laws against deceptive ads.” Its consumer-facing advice summarizes the relationship issue plainly: “One key is to make a good disclosure of your relationship to the brand.”
The FTC Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule took effect on October 21, 2024. FTC rule guidance addresses deceptive review and testimonial practices, including fake reviews. The guidance also says AI-generated stock avatars are not “consumer reviews” under the rule, while influencers can still face liability for lying about product use or experience. This distinction does not make synthetic recommendations trustworthy; it explains why production method, disclosure and truthfulness must be evaluated separately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWorked examples
A synthetic presenter with a clear label
A video uses a virtual presenter and carries a clear “completely AI-generated” notice. The account also discloses that the advertiser supplied the script. You can reasonably conclude that the presenter is synthetic and that a commercial connection exists. You still need documentation or independent testing to decide whether the quoted battery capacity or durability claim is true; neither disclosure answers that question.
A human reviewer with AI-assisted editing
A creator appears on camera, shows a serial-numbered unit, records setup and reports a limitation. The caption says an AI tool was used to remove background noise, and the creator discloses receiving the product free. The evidence supports human handling and transparent editing, while the free product remains a material connection. Verify the measured result independently instead of treating AI assistance as proof of bias.
An unlabeled, highly polished recommendation
An account posts a flawless voice-over, lists only manufacturer specifications and provides no test conditions, disclosure or provenance. You cannot conclude that it was generated by AI. You can conclude that the review supplies weak evidence of hands-on experience and weak independence, so rely on primary documentation and unrelated testing before buying.
A checklist you can reuse
- Record every AI, synthetic or alteration label and note what part of the media it covers.
- Open available Content Credentials and save the creator, creation, edit and AI-action details.
- Identify payment, gifting, employment, family, personal or affiliate relationships and assess whether the disclosure is clear and conspicuous.
- List each experience claim and mark the stated model, settings, conditions, duration and evidence.
- Look for limitations, failed tests and observations that go beyond manufacturer specifications.
- Compare important facts with documentation and multiple unrelated reviewers.
- Use an automated detector only as a supplementary signal, never as a verdict.
- Write separate confidence judgments for production method, commercial independence, actual use and product performance.
What is still unknown
There is no reliable published statistic in the available official material that quantifies how often product reviews or influencer recommendations are AI-generated. Do not convert a handful of suspicious examples or a detector’s score into a prevalence claim. The practical goal is not to estimate a percentage; it is to decide whether a specific recommendation supplies enough transparent, corroborated evidence for the decision you are making.

AI labels and Content Credentials help you understand how a recommendation was produced, while disclosures reveal commercial incentives.
