No single clue proves that a Pokémon Red or Blue cartridge is genuine. The reliable approach is to compare several independent details: the label, colored shell and molded top mark, security screw, internal circuit board, save-battery construction, region and print-run characteristics, and the seller’s evidence. A cartridge that merely boots—or has a convincing label—can still be counterfeit. Conversely, an authentic cartridge may have a dead battery or a replacement shell.
Use the checks below in order. If the physical evidence conflicts, keep the transaction return-protected and have a reputable retro-game shop or authentication service inspect the board rather than relying on a marketplace photo or a boot test.

What authenticity means for a Red or Blue cartridge
An authentic copy is a Nintendo-produced cartridge made for the relevant Game Boy release and region. Collectors often encounter three different situations that look similar from the outside:

- Authentic board in a replacement shell or with a replacement label: the game hardware may be genuine, but the exterior is not original. This matters for collectible value and should be disclosed by the seller.
- Counterfeit reproduction: the shell, label and electronics imitate the game, often with a non-Nintendo board or a dummy save component.
That distinction is why opening the shell can provide important evidence but does not, by itself, establish authenticity. A genuine board can be placed in an aftermarket shell, and a counterfeit can be fitted with a shell or label that looks unusually good.

Start with a layered inspection
Check the cartridge in this order, stopping only when the evidence is decisive. A positive result in one category should increase confidence, not end the inspection.
- Inspect the label in bright, indirect light and compare its region markings with a verified reference.
- Examine the colored shell, the top molding and the overall plastic quality.
- Look at the screw head without removing it; if you own the cartridge or have permission to open it, use the correct driver.
- Compare the exposed board with a known genuine board from the same region and, where possible, the same revision.
- Check the save-memory battery construction.
- Test saving only as supporting evidence.
- Ask the seller about reshelling, relabeling and battery replacement, and preserve a return option until the evidence agrees.
Label: the first filter, not the verdict
Check print quality and spelling
A genuine label has sharp, correctly spelled text, clean logos and registration that looks like commercial printing. Under magnification, the artwork should not resemble a low-resolution home-printer image. Blur, jagged pixels, streaking, uneven color blocks, fuzzy white lettering or a misspelled title are strong warning signs.
Compare the entire label with a verified example from the same market. Look at the Nintendo and Game Boy logos, the Pokémon title treatment, the legal text, the rating information and the placement of the cartridge-specific artwork. A label that is merely the correct color is not enough; counterfeiters frequently copy the most recognizable elements while getting small type, spacing or logo geometry wrong.
Interpret the impressed number correctly
The CATRP guide notes a small impressed number near the lower-right area of the label on many genuine examples. Treat that mark as corroboration only. Counterfeiters can reproduce it, so its presence cannot override a suspicious board, poor printing or an incorrect shell.
Look for relabeling
Fresh adhesive, a label that sits slightly crooked, a different gloss from the surrounding plastic or lifted edges may indicate a replacement label. A relabeled cartridge can still contain an authentic Nintendo board, but it is not an untouched original. Ask the seller directly whether the label was replaced and record the answer before buying.
Shell and top mark
Color and molding
Original Red and Blue cartridges use their characteristic colored shells. A gray shell, an obviously mismatched hue, rough flash around the edges or soft, poorly defined molding should trigger closer inspection. Color alone cannot authenticate a cartridge because shells can be replaced, but a color that is wrong for the game is a useful warning.
Inspect the concave oval
The top of a genuine cartridge has a concave oval Nintendo GAME BOY mark molded into the plastic. Check that the lettering is correctly formed and that the oval is recessed rather than flat, shallow or misshapen. Incorrect lettering, a flat oval, rough edges or a surface that looks cast from a crude mold are common counterfeit indicators.

Examine the top, sides and seam together. Uneven seams, plastic that does not meet cleanly, or a shell whose texture differs from the reference may indicate an aftermarket housing. If the shell looks new while the label is worn—or the reverse—ask whether the cartridge was reshelled.
Screw: a useful physical clue
According to the CATRP guide, the original shell uses a Game Bit security screw. A Phillips screw in its place is suspicious because it suggests that the shell has been opened or replaced, although it does not prove that the board inside is counterfeit.
If you are opening a cartridge you own, use a 3.8 mm Game Boy cartridge screwdriver. The correctly sized bit seats in the security recess and reduces the chance of stripping the fastener. Do not force a mismatched driver or pry the shell apart while the screw is still engaged. Keep the screw and shell halves together so you can restore the cartridge without introducing additional damage.
For a used purchase, ask for a clear, straight-on photograph of the screw head. A seller who supplies only a label photograph has not provided enough evidence for a high-confidence authentication.
Opening the shell and checking the PCB
Prepare before you open it
Opening a cartridge can affect a seller’s return policy, so do it only after confirming that the transaction allows inspection or after the return period has been protected. Work on a clean, dry surface, discharge static from your hands, and avoid touching contacts or components unnecessarily. Photograph the cartridge before removing the screw so you can document its original condition.
Compare with a region-matched genuine board
The strongest internal check is a side-by-side comparison with a verified original from the same region. Nintendo used more than one production run for Red, Blue and Yellow, and board text can vary. A board that differs from an online photograph may therefore be a legitimate revision; compare the overall layout, markings and component arrangement rather than rejecting it because one printed code is different.
CATRP identifies Nintendo branding and a group of four rectangles arranged as a 2×2 pattern on the back of the board as common features of authentic boards. Nintendo Life also recommends comparing the board with a verified original. Those details are meaningful when they occur in the expected positions and are accompanied by the other physical evidence. A logo copied onto an otherwise incorrect board is not sufficient.

Inspect the save battery
Red and Blue use battery-backed save memory. On a genuine save board, the coin battery is soldered in place. A glued-in dummy battery or a black epoxy blob where the save circuitry should be is a major warning sign. Photograph the battery and its connections before handling anything; do not remove a battery merely to inspect it.

A replacement battery can be legitimate maintenance. Ask whether it was replaced, when the work was done and whether the board was resoldered. A replaced battery changes the cartridge’s service history but does not automatically make the board fake. What matters is whether the board itself matches a region-appropriate Nintendo design and whether the battery is actually connected to the save circuit.
Do not overread one board marking
Print-run differences mean that board text, ratings and other small markings are not universal. Use the board’s complete design and provenance. If a seller presents a board photograph from a different region as the reference, request a better comparison before making a decision.
Save behavior is supporting evidence only
A working game and a successful save do not prove authenticity. Counterfeit cartridges can be engineered to boot, and a genuine cartridge can boot while its battery is failing. Because the save memory is battery-backed, a dead battery may erase existing saves on an authentic copy.
If you are testing a cartridge you own, treat the result as one data point: a game that does not retain a save needs battery or board diagnosis, not an immediate counterfeit verdict. A cartridge that boots and saves should still be checked internally and against a verified physical reference.

Account for region and print-run differences
Red, Blue and Yellow were released in multiple print runs. Details that vary between legitimate examples include the appearance of the ESRB logo and some board text. ESRB logos can be white or black on genuine cartridges. Match the candidate with a reference from the same region and, when possible, the same revision before declaring it fake.
| Feature | What a genuine example may show | How to use the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| ESRB logo | White or black, depending on the legitimate print run | Do not reject a cartridge solely because the logo color differs from another genuine photograph. |
| Board text | More than one legitimate set of markings and revisions | Compare the same region and overall board layout rather than one code. |
| Label language and ratings | Region-specific text and symbols | Make sure the label belongs to the market represented by the board and shell. |
| Shell and molding | Consistent colored plastic and a concave Nintendo GAME BOY oval | Use color and molding as exterior evidence, while allowing for an acknowledged reshell. |
The region caveat prevents false positives, but it is not a blanket excuse for every discrepancy. A board with the wrong regional design, a counterfeit shell and a low-quality label remains highly suspicious even if one print-run detail is plausible.

Buying workflow: what to request before paying
Request four photographs
Ask for clear, uncompressed photographs of the front label, top edge, screw and PCB. The images should be in focus, evenly lit and large enough to read the small lettering. A photograph of the front alone cannot reveal a dummy battery or an incorrect board.
Ask three direct questions
- Has the cartridge been reshelled?
- Has the label been replaced or reattached?
- Has the battery been replaced, and was the work soldered to the original board?
Save the responses with the listing or message history. A candid disclosure of maintenance is preferable to an unexplained mismatch; it lets you value an authentic board and an original exterior separately.

Keep the transaction return-protected
Do not surrender your return option before inspection. If the seller refuses an internal photograph, will not answer questions about modifications or pressures you to waive returns, treat the missing evidence as a risk rather than filling the gap with assumptions.

What conflicting evidence usually means
The label looks perfect, but the board is wrong
Give the board more weight than the label. A convincing print can be reproduced, while an incorrect internal layout or dummy save component strongly suggests a counterfeit. Ask for a same-region comparison and consider returning the cartridge.
The board looks genuine, but the shell is gray or poorly molded
This may be an authentic board in an aftermarket shell. Ask whether it was reshelled and decide whether that condition meets your collecting goal. Do not describe the exterior as original without disclosure.
The game boots, but the screw or label is suspicious
Booting demonstrates only that the cartridge communicates with the console. Keep the candidate unverified until the physical checks agree.

The cartridge does not save
A failed save can result from a depleted battery on a genuine cartridge. Inspect the battery and board rather than using the save failure alone as proof of a fake.
One code or logo differs from your reference
First verify that the reference is from the same region and print run. Legitimate ESRB logo colors and board text can vary. Reject the cartridge only when the complete evidence remains inconsistent.
When to use an expert inspection
Use a reputable retro-game shop or authentication service when the photos are inconclusive, the seller will not permit a clear board view, or the cartridge has mixed parts. An expert can compare the board with known originals and identify a reshell or relabel without forcing you to guess from a tiny marketplace image.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
There is no authoritative prevalence percentage that can tell you how likely a particular listing is to be counterfeit. Claims about a fixed marketplace rejection rate should not replace inspection of the individual cartridge.
A practical decision checklist
- Likely original: label quality, regional details, shell molding, screw, board design and soldered battery all agree with a same-region genuine reference, and the seller’s history is consistent.
- Authentic board, modified exterior: the PCB matches a genuine design, but the shell or label is replaced or the work is disclosed. Treat it as a repaired or reshelled cartridge, not an untouched original.
- Suspicious: counterfeit-looking print, incorrect shell molding, a Phillips screw without explanation, an incorrect board, a dummy battery or several contradictions.
- Unverified: the cartridge boots but you lack clear photographs or an internal comparison. Keep the return option and do not pay a premium for certainty you do not have.
Why the Nintendo mark is not enough
“This symbol is your assurance that the product has been evaluated and licensed by Nintendo for use with its systems.”
— Nintendo Support
Official-looking marks are part of the evidence, not a substitute for it. Counterfeiters copy logos, labels and molded symbols; the combination of manufacturing details, board construction, region matching and seller disclosure is what makes the conclusion defensible.
