Check the light on the MagSafe 3 connector, then check your Mac’s Battery status. A steady amber light means the battery is charging or charging is on hold; green means it is fully charged. Repeated amber flashing may indicate a charging issue.
What the MagSafe 3 light means
When you connect the cable, the indicator on its magnetic connector glows. Apple’s MacBook Pro user guide defines green as fully charged and amber as charging. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance adds that amber can also mean charging is on hold.

The light alone does not tell you whether the battery percentage is increasing. Look at the Battery status in macOS for the current charging state and any explanation.

Why the battery may not be gaining charge
A connected adapter does not always mean the battery should be charging. Apple’s Mac laptop charging guidance says macOS may show “Charging On Hold,” “Charged to [%] Limit,” or “Charging to [%] Limit.” A hold or reached charge limit can explain why the percentage is not rising.

If the limit has been reached and you need a full charge, choose “Charge to Full Now” from the Battery menu. If macOS shows a hold, check the displayed status before treating steady amber as a fault.

- Disconnect the USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable from the Mac and power adapter. Unplug the adapter from the wall.
- Inspect the MagSafe 3 port and connector. Wipe them with a dry cloth, and make sure they are dry and free of debris.
- Check the adapter’s USB-C port and the cable’s USB-C connector for debris.
- Restart the Mac.
- Reconnect the adapter to the wall, connect the cable to the adapter, then connect it to the Mac. Check whether it charges normally.
- If repeated flashing continues, try another MagSafe 3 cable or charge over USB-C. If the problem persists, check for software updates. Apple says software incompatibility may be involved even when another charging method works; if the fault remains, ask an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to evaluate it.
These steps follow Apple’s MagSafe cable and power adapter troubleshooting instructions. A different charging method working does not by itself prove the original MagSafe cable is physically damaged.
Confirm that the cable and adapter fit your Mac
MagSafe 3 charging uses a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable and a USB-C power adapter. Apple lists MagSafe 3 on MacBook Pro models introduced in 2021 or later, except the 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro introduced in 2022, and MacBook Air models introduced in 2022 or later. Original MagSafe and MagSafe 2 adapters are not compatible with MagSafe 3. Check your Mac’s exact model before replacing a cable or adapter.

Adapter wattage and charging speed depend on the Mac model. For example, Apple’s 2026 MacBook Pro user guide says a 96 W adapter can fast-charge a 14-inch MacBook Pro to up to 50 percent in around 30 minutes; a 140 W adapter can charge a 16-inch model to approximately 50 percent in around 30 minutes. Apple specifies the included MagSafe 3 cable or a 240 W USB-C Charge Cable for these examples. These are model-specific figures, not universal timing guarantees.
