A live-service game is worth buying when the version you can play today suits your tastes, works acceptably on your platform, and justifies its price without relying on promised updates. Before paying, check recent platform-specific reviews, regional matchmaking, server-dependent features, ongoing costs, and the refund terms of the store you will use. No public signal can guarantee how long a particular game will be supported.
Start with the game that exists now
Judge the core loop, not the roadmap. Ask whether the genre, pace, difficulty, and social demands suit you with the content currently available. A long list of future seasons or features is not content you can play today.

That distinction matters in a crowded market. In the Game Developers Conference’s 2025 State of the Game Industry, 13% of surveyed developers said they wanted to make a live-service game as their next title, while 42% said they did not, 29% said “don’t know/not applicable,” and 16% said they already developed live-service games. These are developer responses, not a measure of what buyers should purchase. The report also describes ongoing engagement for Fortnite, Warframe, and Genshin Impact, and identifies Concord, Anthem, and Redfall as failures or missed opportunities; the contrast is a reminder that the label alone says little about a specific game’s prospects.

Look for recent reviews and player reports for the exact platform you plan to use. Give more weight to reports about issues that affect your own experience: crashes, frame rate, connection stability, matchmaking, and whether advertised features work. Reviews from another platform may not reflect its performance or player pool.

For multiplayer, look for evidence of active queues and community activity in your region and at the hours you expect to play. A large lifetime audience or a single platform’s concurrent-player count cannot guarantee healthy matches everywhere. GDC’s 2025 survey found that developers cited a stable concurrent-user base (62%) and the percentage of daily active users (40%) among their measures of live-service success; those are survey answers about industry practice, not consumer thresholds. A game can have a visible player count and still leave a particular mode, region, or time slot underserved.
Find out what depends on the service
Read the publisher’s current FAQ, terms, and service notices. Separate the features you care about instead of treating a game as simply “online” or “offline.” Check whether these require internet access, an account, a subscription, or live servers:

- Solo modes and challenges
- Online multiplayer and matchmaking
- Progression, saves, and unlocks
- Purchased items and virtual currency
Destruction AllStars illustrates why this distinction matters. PlayStation’s feature page describes single-player events as well as 16-player online matches requiring internet access and PlayStation Plus. A later PlayStation Support notice says multiplayer had already gone offline because of technical issues, that the game and its virtual currency would be removed from sale on May 26, 2026, and that server support would end November 25, 2026. It says returning players may retain access to Arcade Mode single-player challenges afterward, while functionality and player experience may be affected. “Shutdown” therefore does not always mean every feature disappears, but the remaining experience can be narrower than the one a buyer expected.

Count the full cost, including currency and progression
Write down the base price alongside any subscription needed for the modes you want, expansions, season passes, and optional currency. Then decide whether the content available now is worth that total and the amount of time you realistically expect to play. A discount cannot fix a poor gameplay fit, and a generous roadmap does not make future content part of today’s purchase.
Consider paid currency as money tied to a continuing service, not as a guaranteed store of value. Check whether it expires, whether it can be spent on the features you want, and what the publisher says happens if service changes. A Fairplay report submitted by European consumer organisations to a CFPB docket recounts that Niantic shut down Harry Potter: Wizards Unite in 2022 and purchased Gold was not refunded after the shutdown announcement. That is a documented example, not a universal rule for other games or publishers.

Read the refund policy for the exact seller
Refund terms depend on where and how you bought the game; do not assume one storefront’s rules apply to another. Check the seller’s policy before launching the game or buying add-ons, because eligibility may depend on timing, play, or product type.

For example, EA’s published policy says eligible games may be requested for refund within 24 hours after first launch, or within 14 days of purchase if they have not been launched. A limited 72-hour window applies when a new EA game bought within 30 days of release cannot be played because of technical reasons within EA’s control. The policy excludes separately purchased DLC and currency from refunds under those terms. These are EA’s policy conditions, not a general legal rule; EA directs customers who bought through another retailer or storefront to contact that seller about its refund policy.
Use a buy, wait, or skip decision

If you are comparing multiple games, weigh the factors according to how you will play. A solo player may care most about offline fallback and campaign content; a competitive group may prioritize regional queues, platform performance, and population at its usual play hours. Compare current price and likely total spend alongside update signals and the actual refund terms for each seller.
A useful final test is: would I still consider this a fair purchase if updates slowed or the service eventually closed? If the answer is no, you are paying for an uncertain future rather than a present experience.
