Start with Pokémon’s official TCG Product Gallery to compare a product’s name and packaging, then use the official card database to check a card’s details and set. These checks can confirm that a product or card design is listed by Pokémon; they do not, by themselves, authenticate the specific physical item you have.
Check the product against Pokémon’s official gallery
- Find the product’s likely release year in Pokémon’s year-indexed Product Gallery. For an older product, use the gallery for the relevant year, such as the 2013 gallery.
- Compare the exact product name, product type, and packaging with Pokémon’s images. Check prominent details such as logos, artwork, layout, and any product-specific markings.
- If the item is supposed to include a particular card or other contents, compare them with the official product listing or announcement when one is available.
Pokémon Support recommends learning what official packaging looks like because counterfeit products may look unlike genuine packaging. A close visual match is a useful reference check, not proof that an individual sealed product is genuine.

Check a card’s name, set, and details in the database
Search the Pokémon TCG card database for the card name and compare the listing with the card in hand. Pokémon’s database guidance says searches can use details including card name, rarity, and expansion. The expansion set can also be identified by the icon at the bottom-right of the card.

A matching record tells you that Pokémon lists that card design and its details. It does not establish that the physical card is authentic: a counterfeit can copy details from a real card.

Inspect a suspicious card in bright light
Pokémon Support’s page, “Did I purchase fake or counterfeit cards?”, recommends holding a suspect card up to a bright light. Its guidance states: “Counterfeit cards are often easy to see through if you hold them up to a bright light, so this is a good way to identify a fake.”
Treat this as a practical warning check, not a laboratory test. The guidance does not promise that every counterfeit will be easy to see through or that a card that does not show this sign is genuine.

Put price and seller context in perspective
Pokémon Support says a pack priced dramatically below its suggested retail price is a near-certain warning sign of counterfeit merchandise. It also says the highest reported instances of counterfeit sales it receives originate from flea markets. These are Pokémon Support’s qualitative warnings, not proof about any particular seller, venue, or sale.

Use context alongside the product and card checks. A low price or flea-market purchase should prompt extra scrutiny; neither alone establishes that a product is counterfeit.

Compare the checks without treating them as a score
| Check | What it can tell you | What it cannot establish on its own |
|---|---|---|
| Product Gallery or official product announcement | Whether the name, product type, packaging, and documented contents match an official listing. | Whether the particular sealed item in hand is genuine. |
| Official card database | Whether the card’s design and listed details, including its expansion, appear in Pokémon’s database. | Whether the physical card is authentic. |
| Bright-light inspection | Whether the card shows the see-through warning sign Pokémon describes. | A conclusive pass or failure; Pokémon does not describe it as a guaranteed test. |
| Seller and price context | Whether the circumstances warrant more caution, based on Pokémon Support’s warnings. | Proof that an individual item or seller is counterfeit. |
Pokémon does not provide a validated scoring system for combining these signals. If the checks disagree or leave you unsure, do not treat several weak matches as a formal authentication result.
Use official contents to check a specific product
Official announcements can provide a contents list for a particular release, which is more useful than relying on what a product type usually contains. For example, The Pokémon Company International’s June 30, 2026 30th Celebration showcase describes the standard 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box as including nine expansion booster packs, a full-art Nidorina promo, sleeves, Energy cards, dice, a coin, a storage box with dividers, and a player’s guide. It describes a separate Pokémon Center version with 11 booster packs and a Pokémon Center-logo promo.
Rank #4
- 1 Sealed Booster Pack. 10 Cards Total
Those contents are specifications for the named products in that announcement, not a general contents list for Elite Trainer Boxes. The announcement said releases begin September 16, 2026, with other products scheduled for later dates; check the relevant official listing for the timing of a particular item rather than assuming every product was available on the announcement date.
Ask a specialist if the item remains uncertain
Pokémon Support suggests taking potentially counterfeit cards to a local shop specializing in trading cards for evaluation. This can be a useful next step when the card, listing, or packaging checks are inconclusive. The cited guidance does not describe a formal Pokémon certification or guarantee that a shop’s evaluation is official authentication.
