None tells the full story alone. Compare like periods and definitions, separate reported growth from currency and acquisition effects, and treat bookings as a possible forward signal rather than promised revenue.
Start with revenue: what the company recognized this quarter
Begin with reported revenue and its year-over-year change. Revenue is the value recognized during the reporting period; it is not the same thing as the value of contracts signed during that period.

Then check constant-currency growth. Cognizant defines this by restating current-period revenue at the comparative period’s exchange rates and comparing it with comparative-period reported revenue. It helps isolate foreign-exchange effects, but it does not prove that growth is organic or explain changes in business mix. See Cognizant’s Q2 2026 results and performance-metric definitions.

Before describing growth as underlying or organic, look for acquisition contributions, segment and geographic mix, and any changes in how the company reports its business. Cognizant’s FY2025 release, for example, attributed approximately 260 basis points of that year’s revenue growth to its Belcan acquisition.

Bookings and book-to-bill: signed contract value, not earned revenue
Cognizant defines bookings as the total contract value (TCV) of new contracts, including new sales, renewals, and expansions. Its book-to-bill ratio is trailing-twelve-month (TTM) bookings divided by TTM revenue. These are company-defined measures, so check the issuer’s own definitions before comparing figures across companies.
A book-to-bill ratio above 1 means bookings exceeded revenue over the trailing 12 months under that calculation. It can indicate a larger pool of signed contract value relative to recent revenue, but it does not guarantee when—or whether—the full amount will become revenue. Conversion depends on contract length and type, client spending and delivered volumes; contracts may also change or end. Cognizant says most of its contracts can be terminated by clients on short notice, often without penalty, and cautions that bookings are not comparable to or a substitute for reported revenue.

Look at quarterly bookings and TTM bookings together. A few large contracts can make quarterly results lumpy, while the trailing measure smooths some of that volatility. Cognizant defines large deals as TCV of at least $100 million and mega deals as at least $500 million. Deal counts and sizes add context, but do not reveal how quickly a contract will be delivered.

Utilization: useful only when the company defines and reports it
Utilization can help show how effectively a people-intensive business is deploying available labor capacity. The percentage is meaningful only alongside the company’s definition: which employee groups are included, what counts as available time, what exclusions apply, and which period is covered. Definitions may vary, making a raw cross-company comparison unreliable.
Rank #3
Do not infer utilization from headcount, attrition, bookings or margin. Cognizant’s Q1 and Q2 2026 releases report workforce measures such as headcount and attrition, but do not report a utilization figure. When an issuer does disclose utilization, compare it over time only after confirming that its population and calculation have not changed.
Operating margin: how much operating profit revenue produces
Operating margin expresses operating profit as a share of revenue. Read the GAAP figure and any adjusted figure side by side, then inspect the reconciliation to see which items were excluded. Adjusted margin is a non-GAAP measure, not a replacement for or superior version of GAAP margin; companies may calculate it differently, as Cognizant explains in its Q2 2026 release.
Rank #4
Revenue can rise while margin falls if costs grow faster than revenue—for example, because of delivery costs, workforce mix, pricing, investment, or other operating expenses. The result alone does not identify the cause; examine the company’s commentary and financial statements. If adjusted margin improves while GAAP margin is flat or declines, use the reconciliation to understand the difference rather than selecting the more favorable number. Cognizant’s Q1 2026 release, for example, said adjusted operating margin excluded unusual items, including a property-sale gain in Q1 2025.
Worked example: Cognizant’s Q2 2026 results
Cognizant reported Q2 2026 revenue of $5.481 billion, up 4.5% year over year as reported and 4.1% in constant currency. The difference shows why both growth rates matter; neither alone establishes organic growth. GAAP operating margin was 15.9%, while adjusted operating margin was 16.0%. The company reported year-over-year increases of 30 basis points in GAAP margin and 40 basis points in adjusted margin.

TTM bookings were $29.1 billion, up 5% year over year, and TTM book-to-bill was approximately 1.3x. Those figures mean signed TCV exceeded TTM revenue under the company’s calculation; they do not specify the timing or amount of future revenue conversion. In contrast, Q2 bookings declined 6% year over year, even as the company signed seven large deals with TCV of at least $100 million. This is why a single quarter’s bookings and a trailing-twelve-month ratio can tell different stories.
For context, Cognizant’s Q1 2026 revenue was $5.413 billion, up 5.8% as reported and 3.9% in constant currency. GAAP and adjusted operating margin were both 15.6%. TTM bookings grew 11%, book-to-bill was approximately 1.4x, and Q1 bookings rose 21% year over year. These are period-specific snapshots, not sector benchmarks, and bookings growth should not be read as revenue growth.
For the full year 2025, Cognizant reported revenue of $21.108 billion, up 7.0% as reported and 6.4% in constant currency; it said Belcan contributed approximately 260 basis points to revenue growth. GAAP operating margin was 16.1% and adjusted operating margin was 15.8%. This illustrates why acquisition effects belong in a growth explanation and why adjusted margin is not necessarily higher than GAAP margin. See the company’s Q1 2026 results and FY2025 results.
A practical comparison checklist
- Compare reported and constant-currency revenue growth; identify acquisitions and shifts in segment or geographic mix.
- Check both quarterly bookings and TTM bookings/book-to-bill, note large-deal concentration, and consider conversion and termination caveats.
- Use utilization only if disclosed, with a stated employee population, denominator and period; review workforce context separately.
- Compare GAAP and adjusted margins, read the adjustment bridge, and avoid assuming non-GAAP measures are comparable between issuers.
- Use the same period and definition when comparing companies. Review guidance changes and cash flow as additional context when available.
Cognizant’s Q2 2026 release, dated July 29, 2026, gave revised 2026 constant-currency revenue growth guidance of 4.0% to 5.5% and adjusted operating margin guidance of 16.0% to 16.2%. These are management’s outlook as of that date, not achieved results.
