How to tell whether a game’s AI NPCs run locally or in the cloud

Do not infer the answer from an internet requirement alone. The reliable way to determine where an AI NPC runs is to identify the exact feature, find a current developer statement about that feature, and then use offline behavior and network observation only as supporting evidence. A game may keep scripted dialogue on the device while sending generative conversations to a server, or may run some stages locally and others remotely.

What “local” and “cloud” mean for an AI NPC

For this question, local inference means the model calculation that produces the NPC’s response takes place on the player’s device. The game can still require an internet connection for account authentication, multiplayer, telemetry, updates, downloadable content, moderation, or other services.

Cloud inference means the game sends at least the relevant input to a remote service, where a hosted model generates all or part of the response. The returned text, audio, or animation is then delivered to the game. A game can use a vendor’s cloud service without exposing that fact in its general marketing, so the statement must be tied to the specific NPC feature.

Hybrid inference divides the pipeline. Speech recognition might be local, dialogue generation remote, safety filtering local, and speech synthesis remote. Another design may try a local model first and call a cloud endpoint only when the model is missing, unsupported, too large, or unsuitable for the requested task.

Use this evidence hierarchy

Not all clues answer the same question. Rank evidence from strongest to weakest, and state exactly which part of the NPC system each item supports.

  1. Direct developer disclosure. Check the game’s official feature announcement, support or FAQ page, privacy notice, technical documentation, patch notes, and descriptions of named models or providers. A statement that identifies the NPC feature and says it uses a hosted model or cloud processing is strong evidence of remote inference. A statement naming on-device inference or a local runtime supports a local conclusion.
  2. A feature-specific offline test. Compare the same generated interaction while online and while the device is genuinely disconnected. Test the generative conversation itself, not a conventional line, a cached response, or a fallback animation. Continued operation is consistent with local or cached/fallback behavior, but cannot distinguish those possibilities by itself.
  3. Network observation. Traffic that starts around a voice or text exchange can suggest a remote dependency. It does not prove that the packets contain the prompt or model response; games make unrelated requests for telemetry, authentication, matchmaking, analytics, and content delivery. Encrypted traffic and timing alone are especially weak evidence.
  4. Latency and hardware use. A quick answer does not prove local inference, and a slow answer does not prove cloud inference. Network quality, model size, streaming, queueing, local hardware, and server load all affect perceived delay.
  5. Architecture clues. A documented SDK or engine integration can show what deployment options exist, but not which option a particular game selected. Treat platform capabilities as context rather than proof.

Step 1: Define the feature you are investigating

Write down the game version, platform, region, and the exact interaction. “AI NPCs” may refer to several unrelated systems:

  • Traditional behavior trees, state machines, or authored dialogue;
  • Text generation from a language model;
  • Speech recognition that converts the player’s voice to text;
  • Voice synthesis that turns an NPC reply into audio;
  • Retrieval of game lore or player memory;
  • Safety, moderation, or content filtering; and
  • Animation or decision systems that react to the generated result.

Record whether you are testing text chat, microphone input, generated voice, or another mode. A developer’s claim about one mode should not be expanded to every NPC or every game mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Look for a current, feature-specific statement

Search the developer’s official pages in this order:

  1. Feature announcement and release notes;
  2. Support or FAQ documentation;
  3. Privacy notice describing voice, text, or game-state processing;
  4. Technical documentation or developer blog;
  5. Patch notes that mention model or service changes; and
  6. Named model, speech, or cloud-provider documentation linked by the developer.

Prefer wording that identifies both the feature and the processing location. “Uses AI” is not enough. “The dialogue model runs on the device” supports a local claim. “Requests are sent to our hosted service” supports a cloud claim. If a notice only says that audio is collected or transmitted, it establishes data movement, not necessarily where inference occurs.

Keep the date attached to your conclusion. A game can change providers, add a local fallback, or move a feature from test to production in a later patch. If the documentation describes an experimental feature, label it as experimental and check whether its availability has changed.

Step 3: Run a controlled offline test

An offline test is useful when documentation is silent, but it must isolate the generated feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update the game and note its exact version, platform, account state, language, and game mode.
  2. Start online and perform the same NPC interaction several times. Capture whether the response is newly generated, personalized, and voice-enabled, rather than a fixed line.
  3. Close the game. Disable Wi-Fi and cellular data, unplug wired networking, and ensure no permitted offline connection remains. A temporary server outage is not equivalent to a controlled disconnect.
  4. Restart the game while disconnected and repeat the identical interaction. Record whether the NPC generates a new answer, replays a stock line, returns an error, or removes the feature.
  5. Reconnect and repeat the interaction. Note whether the behavior returns immediately or only after a content, account, or model check.

If the same generative feature works while genuinely disconnected, local processing is plausible, as is a downloaded model or cached response. If it fails offline, a cloud dependency is plausible, but the failure could also come from authentication, a required content manifest, or another online service. Report the observed behavior rather than treating it as conclusive proof.

Step 4: Interpret network activity without overclaiming

A network monitor can show when connections begin, which domains are contacted, and how much data moves. Use that information to form a hypothesis, not to identify the model automatically.

  • A connection that appears immediately after a microphone recording may be related to speech recognition, dialogue generation, voice synthesis, moderation, or ordinary telemetry.
  • A connection to a named cloud provider is meaningful only when the provider’s role is independently documented. A provider may host authentication or analytics rather than inference.
  • Encrypted packets normally conceal their content. Size, timing, and destination do not establish that a prompt or response was carried in a particular request.
  • Persistent background traffic can continue even when the NPC feature is unused, so it is weak evidence of feature-specific processing.

Do not write that a packet trace “proved” cloud inference unless an official document identifies the endpoint and its role. A defensible statement is narrower: “The game contacted a documented service when this interaction was submitted, which is consistent with remote processing.”

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Step 5: Treat response time and hardware load as secondary clues

Response speed is affected by local CPU and GPU capacity, model quantization, memory pressure, network round-trip time, server queueing, streaming strategy, and whether the game displays partial output. A fast streamed reply may come from a distant service; a local model may pause while loading from storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, a spike in CPU, GPU, or memory use can indicate local work without identifying which stage is running there. Speech recognition, model inference, retrieval, safety checks, and speech synthesis may have different resource signatures. Use performance measurements to describe conditions, not to make a location claim by themselves.

How local, cloud, and hybrid designs differ

Question Local design Cloud design Hybrid design
Works with no internet? Often yes for the local stages, provided the model and required assets are installed. Usually no for the stage that calls the hosted model. Some interactions may work offline; others may fail or switch to a fallback.
What leaves the device? Potentially no prompt or voice for local inference, although account, telemetry, or other services may still transmit data. The relevant voice, text, or game-state input must reach a remote service; the exact retention policy is a separate question. Only selected stages or fallback requests may leave the device, depending on routing rules.
Device requirements Requires storage, memory, and compute for the installed model and local pipeline. Shifts most model compute to servers but still needs a compatible client and a network connection. Needs enough local capacity for its first-choice or fallback model and connectivity for remote stages.
Typical failure when a service is unavailable Feature may continue, slow down during local loading, or use a scripted fallback. Generated interaction may show an error, be disabled, or revert to authored dialogue. The game may fall back to local inference, reduce quality, disable a stage, or report an error.
What a positive test establishes Offline success supports local or cached processing for that tested interaction. Offline failure supports a dependency on an online service but does not identify which service. Different behavior by task, device, or connection is expected and must be described stage by stage.

Why a single NPC interaction can use several locations

Consider a voice conversation as a chain:

  1. Capture: the client records microphone audio.
  2. Speech recognition: audio becomes text, locally or remotely.
  3. Retrieval and memory: the game selects lore, quest state, or prior turns.
  4. Dialogue generation: a model creates the NPC’s response.
  5. Safety and policy checks: the response may be filtered or rewritten.
  6. Speech synthesis: text becomes an NPC voice.
  7. Animation and presentation: the client drives facial movement, subtitles, and gameplay actions.

These stages can be split across the device and servers. Therefore, saying “the NPC is local” is incomplete unless you specify whether you mean speech recognition, language-model inference, voice output, or the entire pipeline. Privacy and offline conclusions should use the same scope.

What official examples show

Fortnite UEFN Conversations: documented cloud processing

Epic’s August 20, 2026 announcement for UEFN Conversations identifies Google’s Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite for processing audio inputs and generating text, ElevenLabs for voiced output, and says that real-time character responses are generated through Google Cloud’s processing pipeline. The announcement also says player audio is not stored.

This is strong evidence about UEFN Conversations as described in that announcement. It is not evidence that every Fortnite NPC, every island, or every Epic game uses the same architecture. Epic described the feature as experimental and said publishing islands that use Conversations would follow after Beta, so its current availability should be checked before drawing conclusions about a particular island.

Qualcomm Snapdragon Game AI SDK: a local capability

Qualcomm’s March 6, 2026 description of the Snapdragon Game AI SDK presents local speech recognition, language-model inference, and text-to-speech for game interactions, including NPC dialogue, and says these capabilities can work offline. That demonstrates that a device-side implementation is technically supported by the SDK. It does not show that any particular commercial game has adopted it, enabled every stage locally, or shipped the same model.

NVIDIA ACE: supports both deployment choices

NVIDIA’s ACE for Games developer material describes both cloud and on-device models, including an in-process inference SDK and a local Unreal Engine LLM plugin. An ACE integration therefore establishes available options, not the selected architecture. A game could use a local model, a hosted model, or a conditional route depending on platform, model size, or connection state.

Microsoft guidance: local-first with cloud fallback

Microsoft’s local/cloud AI guidance describes production applications that try local inference first and call a cloud endpoint when a model is unavailable, unsupported, not installed, or unsuitable for the task. It identifies privacy, device resources, performance, connectivity, and model size as design factors. This is general platform guidance, not evidence about a particular game, but it explains why the same title can behave differently on two devices or under two network conditions.

Privacy questions to answer separately

Location of inference and data retention are related but not identical. A cloud system may process audio remotely without retaining it, while a local system may still upload telemetry or store recordings on the device. Ask the developer’s privacy notice:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What input is collected: raw audio, transcripts, text prompts, game state, or identifiers?
  • Is data sent to a provider, and for which stage of the pipeline?
  • How long is it retained, and is it used to improve models?
  • Can players disable microphone access, generated dialogue, or data sharing?
  • Does the policy apply to all platforms and regions, or only a test or specific edition?

For the UEFN Conversations announcement, Epic’s statement that player audio is not stored addresses retention of that audio; it does not mean that no other interaction data is transmitted or that every Fortnite feature is local.

How to write a defensible conclusion

Use a sentence that includes the feature, evidence, and scope:

  • Documented cloud: “For [feature] in version [version], the developer says [named service] processes [specific input], so that stage runs remotely.”
  • Supported local hypothesis: “The feature generated a new response while the device was disconnected, which is consistent with local or cached processing; no developer statement confirms the full pipeline.”
  • Hybrid or unresolved: “The evidence supports local processing for [stage] and an online dependency for [stage]. The location of [unstated stage] is not established.”

Include the platform, game version, test date, language, and connection conditions. If the developer has not documented the architecture and your test is ambiguous, say that the location is unknown rather than turning a clue into a fact.

Common traps and their fixes

“The game needs internet, so the AI is in the cloud.”

Fix: Separate AI processing from multiplayer, login, telemetry, updates, and content delivery. Test the NPC feature offline and look for feature-specific documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“It worked offline, so every AI stage is local.”

Fix: Check for scripted dialogue, cached responses, and reduced functionality. Test a novel prompt and identify which stages actually operated.

“I saw a cloud-provider domain, so that provider runs the model.”

Fix: Confirm the endpoint’s role in official documentation. The same provider may host unrelated game services.

“The response was instant, so it must be on-device.”

Fix: Account for streaming, connection quality, server location, queueing, and model size. Latency is not a deployment certificate.

“The SDK supports local AI, so this game uses local AI.”

Fix: Treat SDK pages as capability statements. Find a disclosure about the actual game, feature, platform, and release.

A compact checklist

  • Have you named the exact NPC feature rather than the game’s AI marketing generally?
  • Did you record game version, platform, region, mode, language, and test date?
  • Did you find a current developer statement about that feature?
  • Did you distinguish generated interaction from authored, cached, or fallback dialogue?
  • Did you disconnect the device genuinely before the offline test?
  • Did you avoid treating encrypted traffic, a provider domain, latency, or hardware load as proof by itself?
  • Did you identify which pipeline stage your conclusion covers?
  • Did you report uncertainty where local, cloud, and fallback behavior cannot be separated?
