A deleted trailer is not proven official merely because it looked polished, used a familiar logo, or was titled “Official Trailer.” Verify its provenance first: preserve the surviving metadata, recover the original page, find a dated publisher or developer record, and compare the actual video. If that first-party chain cannot be established, the responsible conclusion is unverified, not “probably official.”
What makes a game trailer official?
An official first-party upload is a trailer published or directly documented by the game’s developer or publisher, with a matching asset and a dated record. The strongest proof is an announcement on the company’s official website, press kit, media library, or verified account that names the trailer or embeds the same video.

An authorized distribution can also be legitimate without appearing on the publisher’s own channel. A platform holder, event organizer, or named press partner may have permission to distribute the trailer, but that relationship should be documented by a dated announcement or partner page. A generic title such as “Official Trailer” is only a claim made by the uploader.
Keep three questions separate:
- Did the trailer exist? An archived page, screenshot, or surviving copy may answer this.
- Who uploaded this copy? Metadata and channel ownership can identify the first uploader, but not necessarily the rights holder.
- Was the upload authorized? Only a first-party record or documented distribution relationship can establish that with confidence.
A repost can be an exact, unaltered copy and still be an unauthorized upload. Conversely, a trailer removed from a first-party channel can remain official if the publisher’s dated announcement and matching asset survive.

Use one of four provenance labels
Official first-party upload
Use this label when a developer or publisher record identifies the trailer and the surviving file matches it in title, date, thumbnail, runtime, edit, audio, and end card.
Authorized reupload
Use this when a platform holder, event organizer, or named press partner has a documented relationship with the rights holder and the copy matches the first-party asset. Record the announcement or partner page that establishes the authority.
Fan-made or edited
Use this when the creator explicitly presents it as a fan work, or when the file materially changes the official footage—for example, by rearranging scenes, adding unrelated clips, replacing the voice-over, changing the music, or adding a new end card.
Unverified
This is the correct endpoint when records conflict, the surviving file cannot be matched, or no first-party evidence remains. “Unverified” describes the evidence; it does not claim that the video was fake.
Evidence hierarchy: what deserves the most weight?

Step-by-step investigation of a deleted trailer
1. Preserve every trace before searching
Save the dead URL, video ID, exact title, thumbnail image, uploader name, description fragments, displayed upload date, comments, and the place where you found the link. Keep the original evidence file unchanged and make a separate working copy for notes, crops, and annotations. A removed page can still contain the clue that identifies the official campaign.
2. Recover the original page
Enter the exact URL or video ID in the Internet Archive Wayback Machine and other lawful caches. Try captures near the displayed upload date as well as later snapshots. An archived page may preserve the title, description, thumbnail, channel name, publication date, and embedded-player data even when playback fails.

Record what the archive actually shows. A page capture proves that a page and its metadata existed at a particular time; it does not prove that the archived video file is playable, that the file was stored without alteration, or that the uploader had permission.

3. Search first-party records using exact wording
Search the developer’s and publisher’s official websites, news sections, press kits, media libraries, verified social accounts, and store announcements. Use the game title, the trailer’s wording, and likely campaign terms such as announcement, reveal, gameplay, or launch. Check the date and look for a matching thumbnail, embedded player, release window, or description.
Do not rely on a broad search result that merely repeats the video title. Open the underlying first-party page and preserve its date, wording, and asset details. A dated announcement that names the trailer is stronger than dozens of undated reposts.
4. Locate a surviving copy lawfully
Look for the same asset in an official media library, an event recording, a platform announcement, or a clearly identified partner upload. Avoid treating a downloadable file, torrent, or social-media clip as automatically legitimate. Preserve the source page and its metadata before downloading anything permitted by the rights holder.
5. Compare the actual asset, not just its title
Check frame order, runtime, cuts, aspect ratio, audio mix, subtitles, logos, end card, and compression artifacts. A fan edit may crop the picture, rearrange scenes, splice footage from several official videos, replace music or voice-over, add captions, or remove a legal notice. Note exact timecodes for every difference.

Matching visuals are strong evidence that two files derive from the same edit, but they do not by themselves identify the authorized uploader. A repost can be bit-for-bit identical to an official file and still be unauthorized.

6. Document the uploader relationship
A publisher-owned channel is direct evidence of first-party distribution. For another account, find a dated announcement or partner page explaining the relationship. A developer employee, platform holder, event organizer, or named press partner may be authorized, but the connection must be documented rather than inferred from a check mark, follower count, or professional presentation.
7. Check copyright signals without overreading them
Content ID matches, copyright claims, and takedowns show that a rights-holder or platform process acted on content. They do not prove that the removed video was a fan edit, nor do they prove that the claimant uploaded the original trailer. YouTube explains that it can identify who uploaded a video first, not who owns the rights or had permission to upload it.
8. Write a bounded conclusion
State the label supported by the strongest independent chain of evidence. List the first-party page, archive capture, matching-file observations, uploader relationship, and any conflicts. If one link in the chain remains missing, say exactly what is unknown instead of filling the gap with visual impressions.
How to compare multiple surviving candidates
When several copies circulate, build a comparison record rather than choosing the oldest-looking upload. Use the following axes for every candidate:

Choose “official” only when the candidate has the strongest independent first-party chain. If two copies are identical but only one has documented authorization, classify the other as an unauthorized or unverified reupload rather than treating identical content as identical provenance.
What visual clues can—and cannot—prove

Academic analysis of trailers treats logos, descriptions, music credits, footage disclaimers, and copyright notices as context. It also warns that public archives and press-mediated records can introduce historical inaccuracies. Use each visual clue to locate a source, then verify that source independently.

Why a deleted video is not automatically a fake
A removal can result from a rights complaint, a territory restriction, a platform policy action, a channel change, or a private/unlisted setting. It may also reflect a genuine leak or fan upload. The deletion event alone cannot distinguish those possibilities.

Recovery depends on whether a page, media file, mirror, press record, or user capture was archived. No authoritative statistic establishes what percentage of deleted game trailers can be recovered.
Copyright and the boundary for sharing
YouTube’s copyright guidance states: “Under copyright law, when someone creates original work – like a YouTube video – usually that means they automatically own the copyright to it.” It also says: “We can only tell who uploaded a video first, not who owns it or has permission to upload it.” A matching-video notice is not a final infringement ruling: “Just because we’ve found a matching video doesn’t mean it’s infringing on your copyright.”
Those principles apply even when the subject is an official trailer. Do not assume that an official video is free to download, modify, mirror, or republish. Check the publisher’s permission terms, the platform license, music rights, and applicable local law before sharing. Attribution is not a substitute for permission, and a takedown is not proof that a video was fan-made.
When a developer directly denies a trailer
A direct statement from the studio is materially stronger than a repost title or a polished presentation. In reporting about a purported Shenmue 4 trailer, PC Gamer quoted Ys Net saying the video had “absolutely no connection” to the studio. The report is secondary, so the best record is the original developer statement when it is available. Preserve the wording, date, and source, then compare the denied video with any genuine first-party material.

The final label still depends on the complete provenance chain.
Common failure modes and how to correct them
“The title says official, so it is official.”
Correct this by treating the title as an unverified claim. Find the publisher’s announcement or a documented partner relationship.
“It was uploaded first, so that channel owns it.”
Upload order identifies a platform event, not copyright ownership or permission. Use first-party records and rights documentation.
“The logo and audio look perfect.”
Move from aesthetics to asset comparison. Check cuts, runtime, end card, subtitles, and source records.

Record the removal but investigate alternative explanations such as territory restrictions, rights complaints, or channel changes.
“An archive screenshot proves the video file is genuine.”
Separate page existence from file authenticity. An archived page can preserve metadata while the media bytes are missing or inaccessible.
“Many reposts confirm the story.”
Cluster identical reposts as one lead. Volume does not create independent first-party evidence.
A practical worksheet for your final report
- Write down the original URL, video ID, title, uploader, displayed date, thumbnail, description fragments, comments, and discovery location.
- List every archive capture and what each one actually preserves.
- Record first-party announcements, press-kit entries, media-library files, and verified posts with their dates.
- For each surviving candidate, note runtime, frame order, aspect ratio, audio, subtitles, logos, end card, and visible edits.
- Document any platform, event, or press-partner relationship with a dated source.
- Record copyright claims, Content ID matches, or takedowns as platform events, not ownership findings.
- Apply exactly one label: official first-party upload, authorized reupload, fan-made or edited, or unverified.
- State the strongest evidence and the unresolved gap in one sentence.
A concise, evidence-bounded conclusion might read: “The publisher’s dated announcement and press-kit file match the surviving video’s runtime, edit, audio, and end card; the deleted channel copy was therefore an official first-party upload.” If the match is incomplete, say: “The archive proves that the page existed, but no first-party record matches the surviving file, so its provenance remains unverified.”
Bottom line
Provenance comes before production quality. Preserve the dead link and metadata, recover archived records, locate a dated developer or publisher confirmation, compare the exact asset, document any authorized partner relationship, and treat copyright signals as limited clues. Call a trailer official only when that chain is strong; otherwise use “authorized reupload,” “fan-made or edited,” or “unverified” precisely. That discipline remains valid even when the original video has disappeared.
