3D printer filament can become harder to print with over time, but age alone does not tell you whether a spool is unusable. Moisture exposure, the filament material, storage conditions and the product maker’s guidance all matter. A spool may still print well after a long time in dry storage, while a newer spool can develop moisture-related problems if left exposed.
What “bad” filament means
There is no universal age-based expiration date established for 3D printer filament. “Bad” can mean different things: a spool might absorb moisture and print poorly, or it might remain usable despite being old. Drying can help when moisture is the problem, but it should not be assumed to reverse every kind of age-related damage.

Filament materials respond differently to moisture. Prusa Research describes FFF materials as mostly hygroscopic, meaning they attract water molecules from the surrounding air. Its guidance says PLA changes less from moisture uptake than polyamide, while polyamide, polypropylene, PVA and BVOH need especially dry storage or drying before use. How to recognize possible moisture problems
UltiMaker lists popping sounds during printing, visible defects and changes in texture as possible signs of moisture in filament. Treat these as clues to investigate, not proof: print quality can be affected by other conditions, too. UltiMaker’s storage guidance also describes visual changes associated with particular materials.

- Listen for popping sounds while the filament is printing.
- Look for new visible defects in the print.
- Check whether the print’s texture has changed.
If you notice these symptoms, consider the filament type and its storage history before deciding whether to dry or replace it.
How shelf-life guidance varies
Some manufacturers publish shelf-life recommendations for their own materials. UltiMaker’s April 9, 2025 guidance recommends a one-year shelf life under proper storage for named moisture-sensitive materials including PVA, Nylon, Nylon CF Slide and TPU 95A. It states up to two years before degradation for some more chemically inert materials, such as PP and PC. Those are UltiMaker’s recommendations for the materials it names—not general expiration rules for every brand of filament.

How to store filament
To slow moisture uptake, keep filament in a closed, dry place with desiccant, and prioritize more moisture-sensitive materials. Prusa recommends closed storage or a box with desiccant. UltiMaker recommends resealable bags with silica gel desiccant, keeping filament away from direct sunlight, and storing it in a cool, dark place. Airtight containers and vacuum bags are also manufacturer-recommended options.

If moisture symptoms appear, follow the filament maker’s drying instructions for that specific product. Temperatures and durations vary by material and source, so there is no safe universal setting. For example, Prusa Research recommends 45°C for 6 hours for PLA/rPLA and 55°C for 6 hours for PETG. Those figures are Prusa’s recommendations, not settings to apply automatically to other products.

- Identify the filament’s exact material and product guidance.
- Check that the dryer can reach the prescribed temperature and that the spool can tolerate it.
- Dry for the duration specified by the filament maker, then assess print behavior.
Prusa advises checking the dryer’s specifications against the filament’s drying temperature and cautions that conventional ovens require care. Creality likewise advises checking the exact filament maker’s guidance and warns that spool heat resistance matters. A drybox helps slow further moisture absorption during storage; it should not be treated as a way to dry filament that is already damp. Prusa’s USS Drybox guidance says moist filament must be pre-dried.

Deciding whether to keep, dry or replace a spool
Base the decision on the filament type, its exposure and storage history, the symptoms you observe, and the maker’s instructions. If the material is moisture-sensitive and the spool was stored exposed, drying may be worth considering when print symptoms appear. If you dry it, use only a temperature and duration appropriate for that filament and a spool and dryer rated for the conditions. Dry storage helps prevent moisture problems, but neither age nor drying alone establishes whether every form of deterioration has been reversed.
