What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Stop using a laptop charger as soon as it shows physical damage, abnormal heat, electrical noise, burning symptoms or unreliable charging. Unplug it without touching damaged conductors, then replace it with a safety-approved adapter that matches your laptop’s model and electrical specifications.
What makes a laptop charger dangerous?
A charger converts mains electricity into the lower-voltage direct current a laptop uses. Its insulation, casing, strain relief, pins and internal components are designed to keep that conversion contained. When any of those barriers fail, the adapter can expose you to electric shock, create an arc, overheat nearby materials or damage the computer.

A connector that fits the laptop is not proof of safety. The replacement must be intended for the exact laptop model, with matching voltage, current, wattage, connector and polarity. Use the five signs below as stop-use tests rather than waiting for a complete failure.
1. The cable, plug or casing is visibly damaged
Inspect the entire power path, including the wall plug, detachable mains lead, adapter brick, low-voltage cable, connector tip and the strain-relief sections where each cable enters a plug or brick. Fraying, cuts, flattened sections, exposed wire, deep kinks, cracks, discoloration or a loose strain relief means the insulation or mechanical protection has failed.

HP’s inspection guidance treats damaged insulation, casing and strain relief as defects. Dell warns that an exposed or frayed AC cable can cause electric shock. Do not wrap tape around a split cable and continue using it: tape does not restore the charger’s insulation, flex protection or internal connections.
What to do
- Disconnect the charger from the wall and laptop without touching any exposed conductor.
- Do not bend, straighten, squeeze or wiggle the damaged section to make it work.
- Replace the complete affected assembly with a manufacturer-supplied or explicitly compatible safety-approved adapter.
2. Plastic is melted, discolored or unusually hot
An adapter can feel warm during ordinary charging. Heat becomes a warning sign when it is excessive, getting worse, concentrated at one spot, accompanied by discoloration or associated with melted, softened or deformed plastic. Burn marks, smoke or a casing that has changed shape are immediate stop-use conditions.
ASUS distinguishes normal operating warmth from a damaged cable that can short internally and cause electric shock, overheating or fire. Lenovo specifically says not to use an adapter showing overheating or deformed plastic at the AC input pins or anywhere on the adapter.

Place an intact, operating adapter on a hard, open surface. Do not cover it with clothing, bedding, paper or other objects. Restricted airflow can raise its temperature. If the adapter remains unusually hot after you remove obstructions, or if you see heat damage, unplug it and replace it rather than testing it repeatedly.

When heat requires emergency action
If the brick is smoking, melting, scorching nearby material or too hot to approach safely, move people away. Cut power at the outlet or breaker only if you can do so without touching the damaged charger or entering smoke. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified electrician.
3. Prongs, pins or connector tips are bent, loose or corroded
Look at the AC plug blades or pins and the connector that enters the laptop. Bent, broken, missing, loose, blackened or corroded metal can make an unstable contact. That contact may arc, heat up or intermittently disconnect. Apple lists damaged adapter prongs and connectors among the reasons to stop using an adapter; HP also directs users to inspect connector tips and strain relief.
Do not force a bad connection
A plug that requires pressure, sits at an angle or falls out easily is not safe to “make work.” Do not scrape corrosion from a live plug, file a bent pin or insert foreign objects into the laptop’s charging port. If the laptop port itself is loose, burned or contaminated, have the computer inspected before connecting a replacement adapter.

Separate plug damage from a replaceable mains lead
Some adapters use a detachable AC cord. If only that cord is damaged, replace it with the exact approved cord for the adapter and region; do not substitute a cable with an incompatible connector or rating. A damaged adapter brick or low-voltage cable requires replacement of the adapter assembly specified for the laptop.

4. It sparks, pops, buzzes, smells of burning or emits smoke
A spark, popping or cracking sound, persistent buzz, hissing, strong chemical or burning odor and any smoke indicate a possible electrical fault. Lenovo lists smoke, sparks, cracking, hissing, popping and strong odor as conditions requiring immediate action. Apple identifies sparks away from the normal plug-blade contact area and popping sounds as damage signs. Dell describes buzzing as a potential electrical failure.
Normal versus abnormal sparking
A tiny, momentary flash can occur as some plugs make contact, but a visible spark away from the blades, repeated arcing, a loud snap or a spark accompanied by odor or heat is not normal. Do not keep unplugging and reconnecting the charger to see whether the symptom repeats.
Safe response to an electrical symptom
- Stop charging and unplug the laptop end if it is safe to handle.
- Disconnect the wall plug by its insulated body, not by pulling the cable. If the plug or adapter is hot, smoking or arcing, do not touch it.
- Cut power at the outlet or breaker only when you can do so safely and without approaching the hazard.
- After the area is safe, contact the manufacturer or a qualified electrician. Replace the charger; do not open or repair a mains adapter yourself.
5. Charging cuts in and out or the laptop will not power
An adapter that repeatedly disconnects, charges only when the cable is held at a particular angle or no longer powers the computer can have internal damage, a broken pin or a failing connector. Apple includes adapters that do not power the device among adapters to stop using. Dell documents loose connectors and broken pins as failure modes.

Rule out the laptop’s side without stressing the charger
Check whether the wall outlet works with another appliance and whether the laptop’s charging indicator changes when the connector is inserted normally. Do not twist the cable, hold it under tension or continue moving it until charging resumes. If another known-good, correctly matched adapter works normally, retire the suspect unit. If no adapter works or the laptop port is loose, arrange service for the computer.

Intermittent does not mean harmless
Intermittent operation can precede arcing or a complete failure. A charger that works for a few minutes is still unsafe if it requires a particular cable position, becomes hot at the connector or has any of the physical damage described above.
What to do immediately when you see a warning sign
- Stop using the charger. Do not continue a work session, charge overnight or test it with another device.
- Disconnect safely. Unplug from the laptop and wall by insulated, undamaged surfaces. Never touch exposed conductors or a plug that is actively sparking.
- Isolate the damaged adapter. Keep it away from water, children, pets and flammable materials so nobody reconnects it accidentally.
- Escalate serious hazards. For smoke, fire, strong odor, active sparking or a molten adapter, de-energize the outlet or breaker only if safe, then contact the manufacturer or a qualified electrician.
- Record identification details. Photograph the label without handling a hot or energized unit. Note the laptop model, adapter model or part number and the date you found the defect; those details help with support and recall checks.
How to choose a safe replacement charger
Start with the laptop maker’s documentation or support page for the exact model. The safest default is a manufacturer-supplied, safety-approved adapter. A reputable compatible adapter can also be appropriate when its documentation explicitly lists your model and electrical requirements.
Compatibility checklist
- Laptop model: Match the complete model designation, not just the product family name.
- Output voltage: It must match the laptop’s specified voltage.
- Current and wattage: Verify both figures against the laptop requirement and the adapter label.
- Connector: Confirm the exact size and shape; USB-C, barrel and proprietary tips are not interchangeable merely because they insert.
- Polarity: For barrel connectors, check the stated polarity symbol.
- Safety approval: Look for the approvals and markings required in your country and buy from a source that identifies the manufacturer and part number.
- Condition and ventilation: The replacement should arrive undamaged and be used uncovered on a firm surface.
Physical fit alone is not an adequate criterion. If any specification is missing or conflicts with the laptop documentation, do not connect the adapter; ask the laptop manufacturer or a qualified technician.
Original versus reputable compatible adapters
| Decision factor | Original manufacturer adapter | Reputable compatible adapter |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical match | Usually identified for the exact model; still verify the label. | Accept only when the seller explicitly documents matching voltage, current, wattage and polarity. |
| Safety certification | Should carry the maker’s approved regional markings. | Check the specific unit’s certification and manufacturer identity; avoid unlabelled listings. |
| Connector quality | Designed for the laptop’s port and strain relief. | Inspect tip dimensions, fit and cable relief; a loose fit is unacceptable. |
| Warranty and support | Support and warranty route through the laptop maker or its authorized channel. | Coverage depends on the adapter maker and seller; retain the receipt and model number. |
| Ventilation guidance | Follow the laptop maker’s operating instructions. | Follow the compatible adapter maker’s instructions and never cover the brick. |
| Total cost | Price varies by model and region. | Price varies; a lower price is not evidence of equivalent construction or certification. |
Before ordering a manufacturer-compatible replacement laptop charger, read the label on the old unit only if it is cool and safe to handle, then verify the model, voltage, current, wattage, connector and polarity against the laptop documentation.

Check for recalls using the adapter’s identity
Search the laptop maker’s current safety or recall page with the adapter’s model and part number, not only the laptop’s marketing name. Keep the region in mind because recalls and replacement procedures can differ by country.
On 11 February 2025, the UK Office for Product Safety and Standards published a Toshiba laptop AC-adapter recall. It reported that affected adapters could overheat and spark, creating fire and burn risks, and instructed consumers to unplug them and seek replacement information. If your adapter matches a recall notice, follow that notice’s isolation and replacement instructions rather than continuing to troubleshoot it.
Common questions
Is my laptop charger dangerous if it is only warm?
Warmth can occur during normal charging. It is dangerous when heat is excessive, worsening, localized, or accompanied by melted or discolored plastic, smoke, odor or other damage. Keep an intact adapter uncovered and ventilated; replace it if abnormal heat persists.
Can I use a charger with exposed wires?
No. Exposed or frayed conductors can cause electric shock and indicate failed insulation. Unplug it without touching the damaged area and replace the adapter.
Why does my charger smell like burning?
A burning or strong chemical odor can signal overheating or an electrical fault. Stop using it, disconnect power only if safe, and arrange replacement or professional inspection.
What should I do if the charger sparks when plugged in?
Do not reconnect it to test the spark. If there is continuing arcing, smoke or heat, de-energize the outlet or breaker only when safe and contact the manufacturer or a qualified electrician.
How do I know what replacement charger to buy?
Use the exact laptop model and verify voltage, current, wattage, connector and polarity. Choose a manufacturer-supplied or explicitly compatible, safety-approved adapter; a tip that fits physically is not enough.
