Check the connected-device list in your router’s official app or web interface. If you identify a device you want to remove, use the router’s pause or block control; if you cannot identify it confidently or that control is unavailable, change your Wi-Fi password. Then update the router’s security settings and reconnect your own devices.
How to check which devices are using your Wi-Fi
-
Open your router’s official app or sign in to its web interface. If you do not know how to reach it, check the router maker’s or internet provider’s instructions.

An unfamiliar device name is a reason to investigate, not proof that a stranger is connected. Router labels may be generic or hard to match to a person, and there is no reliable universal naming test. If you are unsure, avoid blocking a device solely because its label is unfamiliar.
How to block or disconnect an unfamiliar device
Use a per-device pause or block control when you can identify the device
If your router or app clearly identifies the device and provides a pause or block option, follow the router maker’s instructions. The menu and what the control actually blocks vary by model. For example, Google Home’s instructions say that pausing a device stops its internet access, but it may still reach other devices on the local network. Do not assume every router’s pause feature has the same effect.

Change the Wi-Fi password if identification is uncertain
Changing the Wi-Fi password prevents devices that do not receive the new password from continuing to connect. Google also recommends changing the network password to prevent an unwanted device from accessing Wi-Fi. This is broader than a device-specific pause, but it disconnects your household’s devices too. Update the saved Wi-Fi password on each phone, computer, TV, camera, smart speaker, appliance, and other device that needs to reconnect.
| Option | What it does | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Pause or block one device | Targets a selected client; the effect on local-network access depends on the router. Google Home’s documented pause stops internet access but may leave local access available. | Can limit disruption to one device, but use it only when you can identify the right entry. |
| Change the Wi-Fi password | Devices without the new password cannot continue using the network. | Every legitimate device must be updated with the new password. |
Secure the router after removing access
-
Change the router’s administrator credentials. The router admin username and password are separate from the Wi-Fi password and control access to router settings. Replace default credentials with a strong, unique login.

Use current Wi-Fi encryption. Choose WPA3 Personal if available, or WPA2 Personal. The FTC describes WPA3 as the newer, best available option and says WPA2 also works. If the router offers only obsolete WPA or WEP after you have checked for updates, the FTC advises considering a replacement.
-
Check for router software updates. Get update instructions from the router maker or your internet provider and install available updates.
