To correct your voter registration details, use your state or territory election office’s official instructions, submit the update using an accepted method before its deadline, then check your record to confirm the change. The exact form, available methods, required documents, and deadline vary by jurisdiction; there is no single nationwide correction process.
Start with your state or territory election office
Go to Vote.gov and select your state or territory, or visit that jurisdiction’s election office website. Its instructions will tell you how to update your record and whether you can do so online, by mail, by phone, or in person. Some states require you to register again or use a particular change form. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission says the update process is “usually the same as the process to register to vote”; that describes the general approach, not a procedure that applies identically in every state.

Check the state’s instructions for the specific detail you need to change. A method available for an address update, for example, may not necessarily handle a name or party-affiliation change. Follow the state’s directions on supporting identification or documents and whether the completed update must be submitted or received by the deadline.
Update after a move or legal name change
After moving within your state
Update your registration even if you moved to another address in the same state. Vote.gov says, “You need to update your voter registration after a change of address, whether you moved in-state or out of state.” The state determines how to submit the change and which deadline applies.

After moving to another state
Register in your new state rather than relying on your former state’s registration. Use the new state’s election-office instructions to find its application method and deadline.
After changing your legal name
Update the name on your voter registration through your state’s process. Some states may require you to update your driver’s-license or state-ID information as part of the process; check the jurisdiction’s instructions before submitting the change.

Changing your party affiliation
Not every state records party affiliation. Where it is recorded, changing it generally follows a process similar to registering, but the state sets the accepted method and deadline. A party entry may affect which party primary you can participate in. It does not restrict which candidates you may choose in the general election. Check your state’s rules, especially if you want to change affiliation before a primary.
Check the deadline before you submit
Registration and update deadlines vary by state and territory. Vote.gov notes that a deadline can fall as early as 30 days before Election Day; that is an example, not a nationwide deadline. For another illustration of the differences, Vote.gov’s Alabama page lists a deadline 15 days before Election Day for both online and mailed updates. These examples do not determine the deadline for any other jurisdiction.

- 28# ledger stock.
- 100 registration forms per pad. 3 pads per box.
Use your state or territory’s official page to confirm the deadline for your update method and whether the application must be submitted or received by that date. Allow time to correct a rejected or incomplete application.
Confirm the update on your voter record
- Open USAGov’s voter-registration status page and follow its link to your state’s official lookup.
- Check your registration status and verify your name and address. If your state displays party affiliation, confirm that it is correct as well.
- Check the polling place shown in the record, since an address change can affect where you vote.
- If a detail is missing or wrong, or your record is inactive, contact your election office and follow its instructions for resolving the issue. USAGov advises checking before the state deadline so there is time to address problems.
Can you use the National Mail Voter Registration Form?
A paper National Mail Voter Registration Form is one government-provided route, but its availability and instructions depend on the state. The Election Assistance Commission says the form can be used in every state except North Dakota, New Hampshire, and Wyoming. USAGov lists the same exceptions. Confirm current eligibility and mailing instructions on your state’s official page before using it; a state may direct you to a different process for a particular update.
