There is no foolproof visual trick. The dependable approach is to combine the best original file you can obtain, provenance and metadata checks, visual and audio examination, independent corroboration, and cautious use of automated detectors. Treat every signal as evidence with limits. For identity, money, safety, legal rights, or public reporting, preserve the file and obtain qualified human forensic review.
What you are actually trying to determine
“AI-generated” and “AI-altered” describe different possibilities. A model may create an entire image or video, replace a face, synthesize speech, extend a background, remove an object, or make a conventional edit with AI assistance. A social platform may then resize, recompress, strip metadata, or add its own processing. Your task is therefore not simply to label a file as real or fake. You are assessing three separate questions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- File history: Is there a trustworthy record of where the asset came from and what happened to it?
- Media integrity: Do the pixels, sound, lighting, motion, and geometry behave consistently with a captured scene?
- Real-world claim: Does independent evidence support what the image or video is said to show?
A file can have a clean-looking history yet depict a staged or misleading event. Conversely, an authentic camera image can have no surviving metadata after passing through a messaging app. Keep those questions separate throughout your investigation.

A layered verification workflow
Work from the least destructive evidence to the most interpretive. Do not begin by uploading the only copy to a detector or editing it in an image application.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Preserve the best available copy. Save the original camera file or download, its exact URL, the account or page where you found it, the date and time you obtained it, and any accompanying caption. Keep screenshots only as supplementary context. A screenshot or recompressed social-media copy may no longer contain the evidence needed to establish provenance.
- Record context before examining pixels. Note who posted the asset, what event it supposedly depicts, the claimed location and date, and whether the post is an original upload or a repost. Save the surrounding text because later edits to a post can change the claim.
- Inspect Content Credentials and other provenance signals. Look for a signed C2PA Content Credential or equivalent manifest, then verify whether the signature and manifest remain valid. Read the assertions rather than treating a badge as a truth label.
- Inspect ordinary metadata. Check EXIF or container information for capture time, device, software, dimensions, frame rate, and editing history. Compare those fields with the claim, but never treat missing fields as proof of generation.
- Examine the scene, faces, sound, and time sequence. Look for inconsistencies that merit closer review. A single odd detail is a prompt to investigate, not a verdict.
- Corroborate the event independently. Search for earlier uploads, alternate angles, original witnesses, and reputable reporting. Reverse-image or video-frame searches can reveal an older or different context.
- Use automated detectors only as conditional evidence. Record the detector, version, input file, result, and stated error rates. A score is not a universal authenticity meter.
- Escalate consequential decisions. Preserve an auditable copy and chain of custody, then seek a qualified media-forensics reviewer when the result could affect a person’s identity, safety, money, legal rights, employment, or public reporting.
Content Credentials: useful provenance, not a truth certificate
C2PA Content Credentials are tamper-evident, signed assertions attached to an asset. The assertions can describe origin, edits, tools used, and whether AI was involved. A valid manifest can establish that a particular recorded history was signed and has not been altered since signing. It does not prove that the scene itself was truthful, that the camera was pointed where claimed, or that a person in the frame consented.
Read the history in sequence. An entry showing a camera capture followed by named edits is different from an entry showing synthetic creation. Check whether the credential is cryptographically valid and whether the file you are viewing is the one covered by the manifest. A repost may carry only a derivative copy, not the original signed record.
Coverage is optional. A credential may be absent because the camera or application never created one, a platform removed it, a conversion process degraded it, or an attacker stripped it. Therefore, absence of Content Credentials does not prove that media is human-made, authentic, or unedited. Treat a valid credential as one strong piece of file-history evidence, then test the depicted claim separately.

Metadata checks and their limits
Metadata is the information stored alongside image, video, or audio data. Depending on the format, it may include make and model, capture time, GPS coordinates, lens settings, software, dimensions, frame rate, or an editing application. Compare these fields with the story: a claimed live broadcast with a file created months earlier deserves explanation; a camera model that cannot record the stated resolution is another lead.
Metadata is easy to lose. Messaging services, social networks, screenshots, screen recordings, exports, and format conversions commonly remove or rewrite it. An editor can also set plausible values. A file with no EXIF record is therefore inconclusive, while a coherent record is supporting evidence rather than a guarantee. Save a read-only copy before opening or exporting the file in software that may rewrite its metadata.

For video, compare container duration, frame rate, audio streams, and timestamps with the visible sequence. Sudden changes in frame rate or an audio track that starts at an unexplained offset can indicate transcoding or editing, but ordinary platform processing can produce similar symptoms. Document what you observed instead of declaring manipulation from one field.
Visual examination: clues that justify investigation
Inspect at native resolution and at several magnifications. Compression can create blockiness and ringing that resemble generated detail, so distinguish platform artifacts from inconsistencies that remain across the image.
Lighting, shadows, and reflections
Check whether light direction, softness, and color agree across faces, clothing, objects, and the ground. Shadows should fall consistently with the apparent light source. Reflections in windows, water, mirrors, or glossy surfaces should show the same geometry and timing as the objects producing them. Conflicts are useful leads, not conclusive proof; real scenes can contain multiple light sources and unusual surfaces.
Geometry, scale, and repeated texture
Look for impossible joins, warped straight lines, inconsistent scale, or objects that merge into one another. Backgrounds may be less coherent than the main subject, with repeated textures or details that change without a physical reason. Compare edges frame by frame in video because a synthesized region may wobble, smear, or change shape as the camera or subject moves.
Faces and fine detail
Inspect face boundaries, transitions between skin and hair, teeth, ears, and small accessories. Check whether eye and mouth movement follows the person’s expression and whether a face appears to slide over the head during motion. These are indications for further checking, not a checklist that can certify a fake.

Older advice about blinking is no longer dependable. The Associated Press, quoting deepfake expert Henry Ajder in guidance published on May 7, 2024, noted that “some widely shared advice – such as looking for unnatural blinking patterns among people in deepfake videos – no longer holds.” Modern systems can reproduce familiar cues, and genuine people can blink unusually because of timing, fatigue, or editing.

Video, audio, and temporal consistency
Video provides more evidence than a still frame, but it also creates more opportunities for ordinary encoding artifacts. Watch the entire clip, then replay difficult moments slowly. Ask whether motion, sound, and scene changes agree.
- Lip synchronization: Do mouth shapes and timing match the spoken phonemes, or does the audio lead or lag selectively around words?
- Face and hair boundaries: Do edges flicker when the head turns, or do skin tones change abruptly between adjacent frames?
- Object permanence: Do hands, jewelry, logos, and background objects retain their shape and position when they should?
- Lighting over time: Do highlights and shadows move with the subject and camera, or remain pasted in place?
- Sound environment: Does room tone, reverberation, wind, or crowd noise continue naturally through cuts and speech?
- Edits and transitions: Are there unexplained jumps, duplicated frames, missing audio, or changes in frame rate?
A mismatch can result from dubbing, a conventional cut, variable-frame-rate recording, noise reduction, or platform transcoding. Treat temporal anomalies as questions to resolve with the original file and independent evidence.
Check the claim, not only the file
Even a technically authentic photograph can be presented with a false date, location, or caption. Ask whether the event is plausible and whether visible landmarks, weather, clothing, signage, and objects fit the claimed time and place. Search for the earliest available upload and compare versions. Reverse-image searches and frame searches can uncover an old photograph reused for a new story or a longer video that changes the meaning of a clipped segment.
Look for independent witnesses, official records, reputable outlets, or unrelated recordings showing the same event. Several accounts that copied one another are not independent corroboration. Independence means the evidence was obtained separately, not merely repeated from the same post.

When sources disagree, preserve each version and write down exactly what is established, what is merely suggested, and what remains unknown. A conclusion such as “the file is an edited derivative, but the event cannot be confirmed” is more accurate than forcing a real/fake label.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to use AI detectors without overtrusting them
Automated systems may analyze compression patterns, pixel statistics, frequency information, faces, audio, or known generator signatures. Their performance is conditional on the manipulation, generator, image size, compression, and evaluation set. A system trained on one generator may miss another; a detector tuned for face swaps may not evaluate a fully synthetic landscape.
NIST guidance says automated analysis should be tested on both genuine and forged media, with false-positive and false-negative rates documented, and that algorithmic analysis should be augmented by manual review. In identity-proofing guidance, NIST states: “CSPs SHALL analyze all digital media submitted during the identity proofing process for artifacts and indicators of potential modification, manipulation, tampering, or forgery.” It also says, “Algorithmic analysis of media and automated decisioning SHOULD be augmented by manual reviews to address detection errors.” These requirements describe a controlled process, not a promise that a consumer detector can identify every synthetic file.
Run a detector only after preserving the original. Keep the unmodified file, note whether you supplied a screenshot or a recompressed copy, and record the tool’s result and confidence language. Do not combine several opaque scores and call the average a probability of truth. If two systems disagree, that disagreement is evidence of uncertainty, not proof that one is correct.
NIST’s 2025 reporting on differential morph detection found best-case results ranging from 72% to 90% across morphing-software families, with an additional genuine comparison photograph required. Those figures concern a defined morph-detection task and test conditions; they cannot be generalized to all AI-generated images, videos, or voices. They illustrate why the manipulation type and test set must accompany any accuracy claim.

Compare the main evidence types
| Method | What it tests | What a positive result means | Common failure modes | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Signed Content Credentials | Recorded origin and edit history | A valid signature supports the stated history for that asset | Optional coverage, stripped or degraded manifests, truthful-looking but staged content | Establishing provenance before interpreting the scene |
| Ordinary metadata | File and device fields | Consistent fields support the claimed workflow | Removal, rewriting, spoofing, screenshots, platform conversion | Quick triage and contradiction checks |
| Visual, audio, and temporal review | Pixels, sound, motion, and physical consistency | An anomaly suggests manipulation or editing | Compression, unusual real scenes, improving generators, subjective judgment | Generating questions for corroboration or expert review |
| Reverse search and independent sources | The real-world claim and prior context | Separate evidence supports or contradicts the caption | Unindexed material, deleted posts, copied sources, incomplete coverage | Checking dates, locations, and event claims |
| Automated detector | Patterns associated with a defined manipulation class | A score changes the likelihood under that system’s conditions | False positives, false negatives, unseen generators, compression, unsuitable test set | Screening, never a stand-alone verdict |
| Qualified human forensic review | Integrated file, technical, and contextual evidence | A documented expert opinion with stated limits | Cost, time, incomplete originals, examiner disagreement | High-consequence decisions |
Match your process to the stakes
Casual sharing
For a joke, meme, or low-consequence post, preserve the URL, inspect provenance if available, look for obvious inconsistencies, and avoid repeating a claim that cannot be corroborated. Say “unverified” rather than “definitely AI” when evidence is weak.
Moderate-consequence decisions
For an account dispute, workplace allegation, or news tip, retain the original download, compare earlier versions, inspect metadata and temporal consistency, and seek at least one genuinely independent source. Record detector results only as supporting information.
High-consequence decisions
For identity, law enforcement, financial transfers, personal safety, court proceedings, or public accusations, do not rely on visual intuition or a consumer detector. Preserve the original and its chain of custody, hash or otherwise document the file according to your organization’s procedure, retain the source context, and obtain qualified forensic review. Limit conclusions to what the evidence establishes; an expert may be able to show that a file was altered without proving who made the alteration or whether the underlying event occurred.

- “No metadata means AI.” Metadata is routinely stripped. Treat absence as unknown and seek the original.
- “A credential means the event is true.” Credentials record assertions and edits; they do not validate the depicted event. Corroborate the claim separately.
- “The eyes or blinking look strange.” Such visual rules are unreliable as generation improves. Examine the whole sequence and obtain independent evidence.
- “One detector says 98%, so it is settled.” Ask what manipulation, generator, compression, and test set the system covers, and locate its false-positive and false-negative information.
- “A screenshot is good enough.” Screenshots remove file history and may alter pixels. Find and preserve the original download whenever possible.
- “Several reposts confirm it.” Reposts can all derive from one unverified source. Look for independent capture or reporting.
- “An anomaly proves a fake.” Variable frame rates, platform encoding, multiple lights, and ordinary edits can create anomalies. State the observation and investigate its alternatives.
A compact verification record
Use a written record so another reviewer can reproduce your reasoning:
- Original URL, account, post text, and capture date and time.
- Exact filename, file size, format, dimensions, duration, and a preserved unmodified copy.
- Whether a C2PA manifest or other credential was present and whether it verified.
- Metadata fields that agree with or conflict with the claimed device, date, and workflow.
- Specific visual, audio, or temporal observations, with timestamps for video.
- Independent sources checked, why they are independent, and what each establishes.
- Detector name, version, input copy, result, confidence wording, and known scope.
- Unresolved alternatives and the exact decision you are being asked to make.
This record prevents a strong but vague impression from becoming an unsupported accusation. It also gives a forensic specialist the original context needed to evaluate your conclusion.
Bottom line
Reliable authentication is cumulative. Preserve the original, inspect signed provenance and ordinary metadata without treating either as proof, test visual, audio, and temporal consistency, verify the real-world claim through independent sources, and use detectors only within their documented limits. When the consequences are serious, human review and a documented chain of custody are not optional extras; they are the safeguards that keep an uncertain signal from becoming a harmful certainty.
