How to Tell a Distant Planet Candidate from a Brown Dwarf or Background Star

Astronomers test a distant point of light’s motion and distance to determine whether it is bound to a star. Further measurements help assess whether it is a planet, brown dwarf or unrelated star.

A faint point of light near a distant star is not automatically a planet. Astronomers first test whether it is physically associated with the star, then weigh its distance, motion, light and other measurements to classify it. A source may be a bound companion yet still be difficult to distinguish as a planet or brown dwarf.

What does “planet candidate” mean?

A candidate is a plausible detection, not a confirmed world. NASA defines an exoplanet candidate as “a likely planet discovered by a telescope but not yet proven to actually exist.” NASA’s exoplanet facts page makes that distinction important: evidence must establish that the signal is real and support the proposed interpretation before the object is treated as confirmed.

How do astronomers tell whether a point of light is a background star?

For a directly imaged candidate, astronomers compare its position relative to the proposed host star across observations taken at different times. They also account for the host’s own motion across the sky. A distant, unrelated background star will generally appear to shift relative to a moving foreground host; a bound companion should move consistently with the system, although its own orbital motion can change its relative position.

This repeated-position test is often described as a common-proper-motion check. Seeing motion consistent with the host supports physical association, but it does not by itself prove that the companion is a planet: a brown dwarf could also be bound to the star. NASA and ESA describe astrometry and direct imaging as distinct tools for measuring positions and companion light. NASA’s detection overview and ESA’s methods overview explain their roles.

Why do distance and parallax matter?

Parallax is the apparent change in an object’s position when the observer views it from a different place in Earth’s orbit. It provides a way to estimate distance. If the candidate’s distance is incompatible with the proposed host system, that weighs against it being a companion; a compatible distance supports association but does not alone settle the object’s classification.

Distance measurements also help astronomers interpret an object’s physical properties. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory describes using parallax to determine distances to cold brown dwarfs. NASA JPL’s explanation shows why distance is part of characterizing faint, cool objects.

Could a bound companion be a brown dwarf?

Yes. Brown dwarfs are substellar objects that do not sustain hydrogen fusion like ordinary stars, according to NASA’s brown-dwarf explainer. Their measured properties can overlap with those of massive planetary companions. A spectrum or image can provide clues about temperature and other physical characteristics, but appearance alone does not provide a universal dividing line between planet and brown dwarf.

Classification therefore depends on the available measurements and scientific context, including the system’s age and how the object is understood to have formed. The evidence does not support treating one mass cutoff as an uncontested rule. Association and classification are separate questions: motion may show that an object is bound while its planet-versus-brown-dwarf interpretation remains nuanced.

What each detection method can—and cannot—show

Method What it measures What it can establish
Direct imaging Light from the companion itself Reveals a source near a star, but the star’s glare makes detection difficult and an image alone does not establish that the source is bound.
Astrometry Positions on the sky, including a host star’s motion or a candidate’s relative motion Can help test association over time and detect a host star’s response to a companion.
Parallax Apparent positional change as the observer’s viewpoint changes Helps estimate distance and assess whether an object is compatible with the proposed system.
Radial velocity Periodic Doppler shifts in a host star’s spectrum as it moves toward and away from the observer Detects the host star’s response to an orbiting companion.
Transit photometry Recurring dimming when a companion crosses its star from our viewing angle Can reveal a companion when the orbital geometry produces a transit.
Microlensing Temporary brightening caused by gravitational lensing A planet can add a signal to the event, but the alignment is generally not repeatable.

These techniques answer different questions. Direct imaging captures companion light; radial velocity, astrometry and transit photometry measure effects associated with a host star; microlensing uses a temporary alignment. The available method determines which properties can be inferred and what remains uncertain. NASA and ESA provide further method descriptions in their detection overview and methods overview.

How to weigh the evidence

A useful assessment keeps the possible interpretations separate rather than treating one observation as decisive:

  • Distance: Is its parallax compatible with the host system, or does it point to an unrelated foreground or background object?
  • Spectrum and physical properties: Are they compatible with a planetary companion, a brown dwarf, or a star at another distance? Interpret them with the system’s age and model uncertainty in mind.
  • Independent evidence: Is there corroborating evidence from the host star’s radial velocity, astrometric motion, a transit, or another method appropriate to the system?

There is no universal number of observations or significance threshold that settles every case. The appropriate standard depends on data quality, system age, models and classification conventions. A sound conclusion should state which evidence establishes association and which supports the object’s classification.
