What to Pack for a Remote Island Trip With Limited Supplies and Waste Services

Pack for the island’s actual facilities and rules—not for a generic beach trip. Before you leave, confirm whether you can get drinking water, food, toilets, rubbish collection and supplies there. Then plan enough safe water and food for the itinerary, clean gear to meet any biosecurity rules, a way to manage rubbish and human waste, and safety equipment appropriate to your route and conditions.

Start with the destination’s facilities and rules

Remote islands differ: some have toilets or designated campsites, while others have no fresh water, catering or rubbish collection. Check the current guidance from the island authority and your transport operator before deciding quantities or equipment. Confirm:

  • Whether drinking water is available, and whether it is potable or must be treated.
  • Whether there are shops, catering, toilets and rubbish collection.
  • Whether camping is allowed, and where visitors may camp.
  • What the island permits for cooking, fires, food storage and human-waste disposal.
  • Any biosecurity checklist, access restrictions, baggage limits or vessel safety requirements.

These details depend on the island and trip type. A day visit, a boat-based trip and an overnight camp can require very different loads.

Pack drinking water, food and a contingency reserve

Water

Calculate water needs for drinking, cooking and any washing based on the trip length, weather, exertion and the destination’s advice. Include a contingency for delays or emergencies. The official guidance cited here does not establish one water quantity that applies to every island or visitor.

Some destinations require visitors to bring all their water. New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DOC) says Mātiu/Somes Island has no drinking water or catering facilities, so visitors should bring their own food and water. Queensland’s Whitsunday island safety guidance says uninhabited islands have no fresh water and calls for sufficient food and water, plus extra for emergencies. Its quantities are tied to separate contexts and should not be treated as a universal daily allowance.

Where the authority expects visitors to collect and treat water, follow its instructions for the actual source. Parks Canada says Gwaii Haanas visitors must collect and treat their drinking water and must not drink it untreated; its guidance identifies rapidly boiling freshwater for at least one minute as an effective purification method. That instruction is for freshwater and does not establish a treatment method for seawater or every possible contaminant. Check the hazards your water-treatment method addresses and its compatibility with local guidance.

Food

Bring enough food for the planned stay and a suitable emergency reserve if resupply is unavailable. Use sturdy, sealed containers where required; DOC’s pest-free island guidance tells visitors to keep food in sealed containers. Account for how food will be carried, stored and disposed of, and check transport and island rules before packing.

Inspect gear for island biosecurity

On pest-free islands, a small hitchhiker—such as a rodent, insect, seed or soil—can pose a serious biosecurity risk. Rules vary by island, so use the current checklist for the specific destination rather than assuming one procedure applies everywhere.

  1. Check. Inspect bags and pockets, footwear soles and laces, clothing, tents and groundsheets, bedding, food containers, and any boat or kayak.
  2. Clean. Remove soil, seeds and other material from footwear, clothing and equipment before packing.
  3. Close. Pack checked gear into zipped bags and keep food sealed.
  4. Complete required paperwork. Some overnight visits require a completed checklist to be handed in. Check whether that applies to your island, and do not bring pets where they are prohibited.

DOC’s checklist also says camping is allowed only on islands with official campsites. Confirm the current access and camping rules as part of your planning.

Plan how to carry out rubbish and human waste

Rubbish and food scraps

Do not assume an island has rubbish bins or collection. Parks Australia requires visitors to Coral Sea Marine Park islands to take all rubbish and waste, including food scraps, with them when they leave. DOC gives the same remove-your-rubbish instruction for Mātiu/Somes. If the destination requires pack-out, bring separate, secure storage suited to the rubbish and your return journey.

Human waste

Find out what toilets are available and what disposal method the authority permits before choosing a waste kit. Rules vary: some destinations provide facilities, while guidance for particular remote settings may describe carryout or other methods. The U.S. National Park Service (NPS) recommends asking park staff whether a human-waste carryout bag, sometimes called a WAG bag, is required and available. Its guidance also discusses catholes in some camping settings, but that does not make catholes appropriate everywhere; it says to follow park-specific direction. Where carryout is required, use a purpose-made kit or approved equivalent and plan where it can be disposed of after the trip.

Choose safety and cooking gear for the itinerary

Bring equipment suited to the weather, terrain, transport and time from medical help. Queensland’s Whitsunday guidance calls for a first-aid kit, reliable equipment such as torches and radios, sturdy food containers and rubbish bags; it warns that medical assistance can be hours away and emphasizes sturdy walking footwear.

Cooking rules are destination-specific. Whitsunday guidance says fires or ash-producing stoves are not permitted under its relevant visitor guidance and describes a gas or fuel stove as essential. DOC says fires and smoking are prohibited on Mātiu/Somes because of fire hazards and limited water, and the island may close in extreme fire danger. Check the exact island and campsite rules before packing any stove or fuel.

Also verify requirements for vessel safety gear, charging and communications, sun and insect protection, medication, and baggage weight. These depend on the route, operator and conditions; the available destination guidance does not define a universal kit for them.

Examples of how the checklist changes by island

Destination What the cited authority says Practical consequence
Mātiu/Somes Island, New Zealand DOC says there is no catering or drinking water; visitors should bring food and water and remove rubbish. Biosecurity checks and fire restrictions apply. Arrive self-sufficient for food and water, inspect gear against the current checklist, and follow fire rules.
Gwaii Haanas, Canada Parks Canada says visitors must collect and treat drinking water and must not drink untreated water. Guidance identifies some freshwater fill locations, composting toilets at Watchmen sites, and a specified intertidal method elsewhere. Check current water sources, toilet availability and rules for the specific site; use only the stated treatment and disposal guidance.
Whitsunday islands, Australia Queensland guidance says uninhabited islands have no fresh water and calls for food, water, emergency supplies, first aid, reliable equipment, food containers and rubbish bags. Bring supplies for the itinerary and contingency, and check the specific island’s cooking and access rules.
Coral Sea Marine Park islands, Australia Parks Australia says visitors must take all rubbish and waste, including food scraps, when they leave. Plan secure pack-out storage for rubbish and food scraps.

These examples illustrate why a generic list is not enough: each destination’s instructions are specific and are not interchangeable.
