Sometimes. Mission replay rules vary by game: replay may unlock only after finishing the story, cover only selected activities, or add new challenges without changing the story. And replaying a mission does not automatically mean you can choose a different strategy or alter its outcome.
What “replay with a different approach” can mean
Replay features do not all do the same thing. A game might let you revisit a completed mission, offer a new role or perspective, or add optional challenge goals. Those are distinct features: the ability to replay a mission alone does not prove that it supports alternate routes, choices, or story branches.

- Revisit: Play a completed mission or activity again.
- Change the experience: Try a different role or perspective, where the game supports it.
- Add replay challenges: Meet extra conditions or earn replay-specific rewards.
- Change progression: Advance the story or affect its outcome. Replay may not do either.
How replay works in specific games
| Game and replay scope | How replay works | What replay changes |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto Online — Heists | Rockstar describes Heists as cooperative, multi-part activities with mission scenarios and player roles. | Rockstar says players can replay a Heist for a different perspective and complete Elite Challenges for extra cash. This describes GTA Online Heists, not every GTA V story mission. Rockstar’s Heists announcement (March 10, 2015). |
| Assassin’s Creed Mirage — main missions and contracts | Ubisoft added replay in Title Update 1.1.0. Start from the investigation board’s “Animus Sequences” section or interact with Animus icons in the world. | Ubisoft says replays include new challenges and can award items such as Animus mods. That does not establish that every mission permits any approach or changes narrative branches. Ubisoft’s Title Update 1.1.0 release notes (November 17, 2025). |
| Insomniac story missions | Insomniac says story missions become replayable after completing the main story. The support article’s route is Touchpad menu → Missions tab → select a mission. | The support article documents access to replay; it does not establish that replay changes the story outcome. Check the Insomniac support article for the applicable game and version (November 19, 2025). |
| L.A. Noire — cases | Replay a case from the Cases menu. | Rockstar says replaying a case does not advance the story to the next case; finish it in Story Mode to progress. Rockstar also warns that overwriting a Story file with a Replay file can make the Story file inaccessible. See its support articles on returning to the Main Menu after a case (updated April 6, 2024) and replaying cases (updated February 9, 2024). |
Check these details before replaying
Look in the game’s mission, activity, or case menu, then check its help page or release notes if the option is unclear. Confirm what the feature actually covers and whether it affects your current save.

- Progression and saves: Does replay advance the story, use a separate replay file, or risk overwriting a story save?
Why the answer depends on the game
The official examples show different rules rather than a genre-wide standard: GTA Online Heists can offer a different perspective, Mirage adds replay challenges, Insomniac’s support instructions gate story-mission replay behind story completion, and L.A. Noire separates case replay from story progression. None of those examples means every open-world game offers replay—or that replay necessarily lets you change your approach.
