To tame a nautilus in Minecraft, feed it a pufferfish or a bucket of pufferfish. Once tamed, equip it with a saddle to ride it; while mounted, Breath of the Nautilus pauses your oxygen consumption.
How to tame a nautilus
- Find a nautilus in an ocean. In Bedrock Edition 1.21.130, the official release notes list nautilus spawns in all ocean biomes at Y-level 38 to 58. That location guidance is specific to Bedrock, not a universal spawn rule for every edition. Bedrock Edition 1.21.130 release notes
- Hold a pufferfish or a bucket of pufferfish and use it on the nautilus to feed it. Minecraft’s official Java Edition 1.21.11 notes list both items for taming and breeding. They do not specify how many feeding attempts are required, so there is no confirmed fixed fish count to rely on. Java Edition 1.21.11 release notes
- To ride your tamed nautilus, equip it with a saddle. The official Java and Bedrock notes identify a saddle as the riding equipment.
What riding a nautilus does underwater
While you are mounted, you receive Breath of the Nautilus. This effect pauses oxygen consumption; it does not refill your oxygen meter. The distinction matters if you mount after your oxygen is already low: the effect stops further consumption but is not described as restoring lost oxygen in the Bedrock release notes. How to tame a zombie nautilus
A zombie nautilus may have a hostile drowned riding it. Remove or defeat the drowned rider first; then feed the nautilus a pufferfish to tame it. Which Minecraft versions include the mechanic?
Nautilus taming and riding are part of the Mounts of Mayhem update. The official notes document the mechanic in Java Edition 1.21.11 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.130. For the specific Bedrock spawn locations, use the ocean-biome and Y-level information above; the cited Java notes do not establish that same range.
