There is no single best LiteLLM replacement: the right choice depends on whether you need a hosted gateway, broad managed model access, Cloudflare integration, or only a simpler application-level API. Portkey is a like-for-like hosted gateway to consider for routing and governance; OpenRouter suits teams prioritizing managed access to many models; Cloudflare AI Gateway is worth evaluating in a Cloudflare-centered environment. Vercel AI SDK is an application toolkit, not a gateway equivalent.
Start by identifying what LiteLLM does for your team
LiteLLM’s official documentation describes its open-source fundamentals as “an OpenAI-compatible gateway, virtual keys, spend tracking, budgets, fallbacks, and request/response logging” (LiteLLM Enterprise documentation). A useful replacement comparison starts by listing which of those functions you actually use—and whether you need to keep the proxy in your own environment.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Unified provider API: Do you need one interface across providers and models?
- Routing and resilience: Do you rely on routing, retries, load balancing, or fallback behavior?
- Governance: Do virtual keys, budgets, role-based access, or guardrails matter?
- Usage visibility: Do you need logs, spend attribution, exports, or a particular retention period?
- Deployment control: Must the gateway run in your infrastructure, or is a hosted service acceptable?
Replacing only the API interface is a smaller change than replacing a shared routing and governance layer. Decide which capabilities are required before comparing services.

| Option | Best fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Portkey | Teams looking for a hosted gateway with routing and governance features. | Plan limits and overage costs; verify whether the deployment and controls meet your requirements. |
| OpenRouter | Teams seeking managed access to many models without operating their own proxy. | Less deployment control than self-hosting; review data-processing terms, model availability, and costs. |
| Cloudflare AI Gateway | Teams for whom a managed gateway fits an existing Cloudflare platform. | Check current plan limits and fees for your workload. |
| Vercel AI SDK | Teams seeking a unified application interface in a TypeScript project. | It is an open-source toolkit, not a gateway or proxy; it does not by itself provide a centralized shared governance layer. |
| Direct provider APIs | Teams that prefer to integrate with providers directly rather than add a gateway. | Expect more provider-specific integration work. |
Portkey: a hosted gateway with listed governance features
Portkey is the closest like-for-like candidate in this set when the goal is a gateway with hosted routing and operational controls. Its pricing page, accessed in 2026, lists a Developer tier with 10,000 recorded logs per month and a Production tier at $49 per month with 100,000 recorded logs per month. The listed Production overage is $9 per additional 100,000 requests.

- 192GB DDR4 Memory - upgradable to 1.5TB
- 2x 1TB SSD + 2x 4TB HDD (Removable Hot Swap Drive bays)
- Nvidia Quadro P1000 4GB - Windows 11 Professional 64-bit
The same pricing page lists gateway routing, retries, load balancing, observability, guardrails, prompt management, and role-based access controls. Enterprise is custom-priced and describes private-cloud/VPC options and advanced compliance features. These are vendor-listed features, not an independent determination that a plan satisfies a particular compliance obligation. Confirm the plan terms, deployment options, and workload limits before committing.
OpenRouter: managed model access without running a proxy
OpenRouter is a hosted API option for teams that want managed access to many models and less proxy operations. That trade-off means less deployment control than self-hosting. Check its current data-processing terms, model availability, and total costs against your requirements; a model catalog or fee quoted by a third-party comparison should not be treated as a fixed current fact.
A 2026 comparison reports a 5.5% fee on credit purchases, but this is a secondary-source claim and may change. Verify the current terms with OpenRouter before relying on that figure.

Cloudflare AI Gateway: check fit and current plan terms
Cloudflare AI Gateway is a managed gateway to consider when Cloudflare already fits your platform context. The official pricing documentation is the appropriate place to check applicable limits and fees for the exact plan. Third-party pricing comparisons can become stale, so verify the terms directly before estimating costs.
When an SDK or direct APIs are the better choice
Vercel AI SDK
Vercel AI SDK is an open-source TypeScript toolkit for building AI applications, rather than a gateway/proxy. It may suit a team that wants a unified application interface, but it does not automatically replace centralized routing, shared keys, budgets, or governance.
Direct provider integrations
Calling provider APIs directly avoids adding a gateway service, but leaves your application responsible for provider-specific integrations. Choose this route only after deciding how your team will handle any shared routing, usage tracking, budgets, and fallback needs that LiteLLM currently covers.

How to choose for a production deployment
- Set the deployment boundary. Decide whether self-hosting or a private deployment is required, or whether a hosted service is acceptable. For hosted options, inspect data-processing and retention terms.
- Write down required gateway behavior. List provider and model coverage, API compatibility, routing, retries, failover, and load balancing that production depends on.
- Define governance requirements. Specify whether you need budgets, virtual keys, RBAC, SSO, guardrails, auditability, or data residency controls. Do not assume a vendor feature label establishes suitability for a compliance requirement.
- Set observability needs. Identify required logs or traces, usage attribution, retention, and exports, then compare them with each plan’s limits.
- Estimate total cost. Include platform fees, log or usage overages, model-provider charges, and the engineering and operations cost of self-hosting.
For a like-for-like hosted gateway evaluation, start with Portkey. If reducing proxy operations and accessing a managed model catalog matter more, assess OpenRouter’s terms and costs. If your platform is already built around Cloudflare, check AI Gateway’s current official pricing and feature documentation. Choose an SDK or direct provider calls only when you need an application interface or provider integrations rather than a centralized gateway layer.
