To take a website screenshot with an AI agent, connect an MCP-compatible client to Playwright MCP, ask the agent to open the target URL, then request a screenshot. The documented local setup uses Node.js 20 or newer and starts the server with npx @playwright/mcp@latest. The browser runs headed by default; add --headless when you do not need a visible browser window.
What you need before you start
- Node.js 20 or newer. Playwright MCP is started through
npx. - An MCP-compatible client. The Playwright guide lists VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Code, and Claude Desktop among its clients.
- A target URL that the browser process is allowed to access.
Use the current official Playwright MCP documentation for up-to-date client and package details, since supported clients and package versions can change.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConnect a local Playwright MCP server
The simplest documented arrangement is a local stdio process launched by your MCP client. Add this server entry to the client’s MCP configuration file, preserving any existing configuration around it:
{
"mcpServers": {
"playwright": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["@playwright/mcp@latest"]
}
}
}
Save the configuration and restart or reload the client if it does not discover the server automatically. The exact file location and reload control vary by client; use that client’s MCP setup instructions rather than assuming one shared path.

Run without a visible browser window
The default browser is headed. For a headless run, add --headless to the argument list:
{
"mcpServers": {
"playwright": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["@playwright/mcp@latest", "--headless"]
}
}
}
Navigate and capture a screenshot
- Open the MCP client after configuring the server and confirm that it exposes Playwright browser tools.
- Ask the agent to navigate to the full target address, for example:
Go to https://example.com. - Once the page has loaded, ask:
Take a screenshot of the page. - Inspect the returned image or file in the client. If the page is not at the desired state, instruct the agent to wait, interact with the page, or capture a particular element before taking another screenshot.
Playwright MCP’s ordinary interaction model uses accessibility snapshots: the agent can locate page elements by roles, labels, and text, then act on references. Screenshot capture is a separate visual output; ordinary navigation and element interaction do not require a vision model.
Capture a particular element
When you need one chart, card, or other region rather than the whole page, ask the agent to capture the target element and identify it by a distinctive accessible name or description. The exact tool arguments exposed to the agent depend on the client and installed Playwright MCP version. If the element cannot be identified reliably, first ask for an accessibility snapshot and use the names or roles it exposes.

Use a separately started HTTP server when needed
A local stdio process is usually the most direct client setup. For a client that connects to an HTTP endpoint, start the server separately:
npx @playwright/mcp@latest --port 8931
Then configure the MCP client to connect to http://localhost:8931/mcp. This is appropriate when the client needs a separately managed endpoint, but it introduces a network service that must be protected.
If you deliberately bind the service to 0.0.0.0, it becomes reachable through all network interfaces, not just loopback. Do so only with deliberate network controls and a clear access policy. Playwright warns that origin lists and file-access restrictions are convenience defenses, not security boundaries: redirects and deliberate workarounds can bypass them. Rely on client-level permissions for actual isolation. See the official configuration guidance.

Choose the right interaction mode
Accessibility snapshots for ordinary browser work
The core workflow is semantic: the agent reads structured page information and uses element references to navigate, click, or type. This is generally the right starting point for a screenshot task that involves reaching a page or putting it into a known state.
Vision capability for coordinate-driven interaction
The optional vision capability adds coordinate-based mouse operations and requires a vision-capable model. Enable it only when the agent needs to act from visual coordinates; it is not required just to request a screenshot.
Arbitrary code execution is a separate risk
The documentation identifies browser_run_code_unsafe as a tool that executes arbitrary JavaScript in the Playwright server process and is RCE-equivalent. Treat access to it as trusted-client-only. Do not enable or expose it merely to take screenshots.

Self-hosted MCP versus Playwright CLI or a managed browser
| Choice | Best fit in the documented guidance | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Playwright MCP | Specialized agentic loops and exploratory browser automation. | Tool schemas and accessibility snapshots use more model context than the CLI workflow. |
| Playwright CLI | Coding agents working in large codebases. | Output is more concise, with skills loaded on demand, but it is a different interaction workflow from a persistent MCP tool loop. |
| Local Playwright MCP | A browser process you run and configure yourself, commonly through local stdio. | You manage setup and must carefully control any network exposure. |
| Playwright Workspaces remote MCP | A managed-browser option documented by Microsoft. | Microsoft currently labels the service preview, says preview features have no SLA, and does not recommend them for production workloads. Check its current status before depending on it. |
For the distinction between MCP and CLI, see the Playwright MCP introduction. Microsoft documents the managed option in its Playwright Workspaces documentation.
Troubleshoot common setup and capture problems
- The client does not show Playwright tools: check that the JSON is valid, the entry is under
mcpServers, and the client has reloaded its MCP configuration. Confirm thatnpxis available in the environment used to launch the client. - The package will not start: verify that Node.js is version 20 or newer and that the machine can resolve and run
npx. Use the official Playwright instructions to check for any current package or runtime changes. - No browser window appears: the default is headed, but a headless argument suppresses the visible window. In a remote or restricted environment, the browser may also not have a usable display.
- The agent cannot find or operate the intended control: ask it to inspect the accessibility snapshot, then refer to the control by its exposed role, label, or text. Use optional vision interaction only if semantic references are insufficient and the client has a vision-capable model.
- The screenshot shows an earlier or incomplete page state: have the agent wait for the relevant content or a specific selector before capture. A page can render its main shell before asynchronous content or images finish loading.
- An HTTP-connected client cannot reach the server: check that the MCP server is still running, that the configured port matches, and that the endpoint is
http://localhost:8931/mcpwhen using the documented port example. If connecting from another machine, revisit the binding and firewall deliberately instead of opening the endpoint broadly.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot through an API instead of managing a browser process, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Its API accepts common screenshot parameter names, which can make switching from another screenshot API easier. For example, this cURL call saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and options. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers indicate the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Playwright MCP take screenshots without a vision model?
Yes. Screenshot capture is a core tool. A vision-capable model is needed for the optional coordinate-based vision interaction, not for ordinary screenshot capture.
Does the local Playwright MCP configuration open a visible browser?
Yes, the browser is headed by default. Add --headless to the server arguments for a non-visible run.
