The example below saves full-page PNGs, records a result for every URL, and keeps one failed page from stopping the batch. Pick a readiness condition that matches each site; there is no universal concurrency number or wait rule for every page.
Install Playwright and its browser
Use Python 3 with Playwright installed, then install the Chromium browser binary that Playwright will launch. Run these commands in the environment where the script will run:

The script below uses Chromium and Python’s built-in asyncio. It is an async workflow throughout; do not mix synchronous Playwright calls into the same active asyncio workflow. Playwright offers sync and async APIs, and async is a natural fit for coordinating I/O-bound captures. Playwright Python library documentation
Capture a batch with bounded async workers
Save this as bulk_screenshots.py and run it with python bulk_screenshots.py. It creates an output directory, derives filesystem-safe unique names from each URL, reuses one browser, and limits active captures with a semaphore. Each URL produces a success or error record in results.json; a page-level failure does not discard the other results.

asyncio.run(main())The value WORKERS = 3 is only a conservative starting setting in this example, not a Playwright recommendation or universal limit. Increase or decrease it based on the machine’s CPU and memory, the target sites’ rate limits, navigation failures, and screenshot sizes. Large full-page captures can consume substantial memory and create tall image files.
Why the script creates a context for each URL
Each capture gets an isolated context, so cookies and local storage do not leak between unrelated URLs. If a set of pages should share a login session, cookies, or emulation settings, use one context for that set and open multiple pages within it instead. The code explicitly closes each context and then the browser. Explicitly created contexts should be closed before the browser so their artifacts can be flushed; the finally blocks ensure cleanup also runs after exceptions. Browser API
Choose the right screenshot scope and readiness condition
Viewport or full page
page.screenshot(path=...) captures the visible viewport by default. Set full_page=True to capture the full scrollable page as a tall image. Long pages can yield very large images; use viewport capture if the visible screen is all you need. The screenshot API can also return image bytes instead of writing to a path, which is useful when you will upload or process the image immediately. Playwright screenshots

Wait for the content, not an arbitrary delay
The example waits for the browser’s load event before taking the screenshot. That event may not mean a single-page app has finished rendering useful data or that lazy-loaded images are ready. For a known page, wait for a meaningful locator or other observable condition, such as:

Playwright operations auto-wait for relevant conditions, and arbitrary sleeps are usually a weaker choice: a fixed delay can be too short on a slow load and waste time on a fast one. No one readiness condition fits every site.

Capture an element rather than the whole document
When only one component matters, use a locator screenshot instead of capturing the page:

If the target is inside a scrollable container, the capture includes only the container’s currently scrolled content. Locator screenshot options can disable animations to reduce one source of visual variation, but cannot make dynamic page data, fonts, ads, or time-dependent content identical. Playwright Locator API

Sequential capture versus bounded concurrency

There is no official universal worker count or verified throughput benchmark for this task. Tune a bounded pool in the actual environment rather than treating an example number as a guarantee. Playwright’s Python API is not thread-safe; if using multiple threads, create a separate Playwright instance per thread. The documentation also warns that cancelling a task while it is running a Playwright call is unsupported and may lead to undefined behavior. Playwright Python library documentation
Common problems and fixes
- Browser executable missing: install the browser binary with
python -m playwright install chromiumin the same environment as the package. - Navigation timeout: the server may be slow, unreachable, or still streaming. Check the URL and network first; raise the timeout only if the workload justifies the longer wait. If the page’s useful content appears before every resource finishes, wait for a relevant selector after a lighter navigation condition instead.
- Screenshot is blank or missing content: verify the chosen readiness condition against the actual page. A load event alone may precede client-side rendering or lazy image loading.
- Some batch entries fail while others succeed: inspect
results.jsonfor the affected URL and exception. The script records each item separately so you can retry only failures rather than rerunning successful captures. - Files overwrite each other: keep the numeric index in the filename, or use another stable unique identifier. A URL-derived name alone may collide when duplicate URLs appear.
- Memory pressure or huge output files: lower
WORKERS, capture the viewport rather than the entire page, or capture a specific locator. - Unexpected shared login or consent state: use separate browser contexts for captures that need isolated cookies and local storage; reuse one context only when sharing state is intentional.
- Unstable pixel comparisons: disable locator animations where appropriate and control page data and environment. Animation control alone does not freeze external or time-sensitive content.
