1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRun wkhtmltoimage inside a Docker image that includes the executable and its runtime dependencies, and bind-mount the host directory containing your input and output. The paths passed to wkhtmltoimage must be paths inside the container—not host paths that Docker has not mounted. The example below shows the pattern; it is not tested against a particular image.
What wkhtmltoimage does
wkhtmltoimage is a command-line renderer that turns HTML into an image using the Qt WebKit rendering engine. The project describes it as headless: it does not require a display or display service. See the wkhtmltoimage usage documentation and project site.

Docker packages the program and its environment; it does not replace or modernize the renderer. The official project information explains obtaining binaries or building from source, but does not establish a currently maintained official Docker image or a current recommended version.

First choose an image whose provenance you have checked and that contains wkhtmltoimage, its runtime libraries, and the fonts your HTML needs. Then run the container with the working directory mounted:
#1 Best Overall
docker run --rm -v "$PWD:/work" -w /work <image-containing-wkhtmltoimage>
wkhtmltoimage input.html output.png
Replace the angle-bracketed image placeholder with the image name and tag you have reviewed. Because $PWD is mounted at /work, both files in this command are container paths: Docker reads /work/input.html and writes /work/output.png. The generated image will appear in the host’s current directory. The placeholder image name means the command is a usage pattern, not a copy-and-run recommendation.
Confirm the executable is present
If you are unsure whether the selected image has the program, check its version before rendering:
Rank #2
docker run --rm <image-containing-wkhtmltoimage> wkhtmltoimage --version
This only works if the executable and required libraries are installed in that image. Do not infer that a Docker Hub listing or a familiar image name is maintained or compatible with your workload.
Use standard input when you do not have an input file
A documented third-party example pipes HTML to the program and writes the result into a mounted path:
Rank #3
printf '%s' '<html><body><h1>Hello</h1></body></html>' |
docker run --rm -i -v /tmp:/tmp wkhtmltox
wkhtmltoimage --encoding utf-8 - /tmp/piped.jpg
Here -i keeps standard input open, - tells the renderer to read HTML from standard input, and /tmp/piped.jpg is visible on the host because /tmp is mounted into the container. This invocation comes from the archived IMIO docker-wkhtmltox repository, which GitHub marks archived on April 11, 2025. It demonstrates the mount and command pattern, not a current image recommendation.
Choose and maintain an image carefully
The examples available are third-party references, not a verified current official image. The webuni/wkhtmltopdf Docker Hub listing was described as last updated almost six years before the research crawl; treat it as a stale reference rather than a recommendation. Before adopting any image, check:
- Publisher and provenance: identify who builds it and where its source and build instructions live.
- Maintenance and base image: review update history and whether the underlying operating system remains supported.
- Renderer and dependencies: determine the exact
wkhtmltoimagebuild, runtime libraries, and fonts included; render representative pages to check fidelity. - Deployment repeatability: pin a reviewed image by immutable digest, then rebuild when its base image or dependencies need security updates.
- Operational footprint: consider image size and startup needs for your use case rather than assuming one image is faster or smaller.
The available sources do not establish a current best image, a head-to-head performance or security comparison, or exact dependency requirements for every distribution. Verify compatibility with your actual HTML and deployment environment.

Limit access to files and privileges
Mount only the directories the job needs. Avoid mounting sensitive host paths, and restrict network access to what the page requires. These are general container precautions; they are not guarantees about wkhtmltoimage‘s handling of local files or remote resources. The available information does not verify its current behavior in those areas or establish a tool-specific security finding.

Docker rootless mode runs both the Docker daemon and containers without root privileges, subject to host setup requirements including newuidmap, newgidmap, and subordinate UID/GID ranges. See Docker’s rootless mode documentation. This is a general hardening option, not a wkhtmltoimage-specific feature.
Troubleshoot common failures
wkhtmltoimage: not foundor an executable error: the selected image may not contain the program, or the command may not be on its executable path. Check the image build and run the version check shown above.- Input file not found: confirm the host directory is mounted and use its container-side path. With
-v "$PWD:/work" -w /work, useinput.htmlor/work/input.html, not an unrelated host path. - Output missing on the host: write to a directory that is mounted. A file saved elsewhere in the container may disappear when
--rmremoves it. - Missing glyphs or changed layout: check installed fonts and runtime dependencies, then compare output from the actual HTML workload. The selected image’s name alone does not establish which fonts or libraries it includes.
- Pipe produces no usable image: ensure Docker receives the input with
-i, use-as the renderer’s input argument, and write the output to a mounted container path. - Old image behaves differently than expected: review its maintenance history, base image, and renderer version; an old third-party listing may no longer match your environment.

If your goal is to capture a website rather than specifically run this Qt WebKit command-line renderer, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF. See the API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does wkhtmltoimage need an X server in Docker?
No. The project describes wkhtmltoimage as headless and says it does not require a display or display service.
Is there a current official Docker image for wkhtmltoimage?
The available project information does not establish a currently maintained official Docker image or a current recommended version. Check the publisher and maintenance history of any third-party image before using it.
