A useful website screenshot handoff shows what to build, at which viewport, and what a static image cannot explain. Use Chrome DevTools to capture the current viewport or the full page, repeat for important responsive layouts and states, then label each image and add concise implementation notes.
Choose the capture that answers the right question
A viewport screenshot records what is visible at one browser size; a full-page screenshot shows the page’s vertical structure beyond that viewport. Chrome DevTools supports both in Device mode. Use the first to communicate a particular layout at a known width and height, and the second to review page length and content flow.

- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Enable the Device Toolbar, then select a device type or set the dimensions for the desktop or mobile layout you need to document.
- Open the Device Toolbar’s More options menu.
- Choose Capture screenshot to save the currently visible viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot to capture the whole page, including content outside the viewport.
Device mode simulates mobile or desktop rendering. Record the selected mode and dimensions alongside the image when those details affect implementation; the capture is a reference to a chosen viewport, not proof that every real device renders identically. Cover the layouts and states developers need to implement
Do not assume one screenshot explains responsive behavior. Capture separate views for the important widths or device categories in the design, and include distinct interaction states when they materially change the implementation. For example, a default page and an expanded navigation menu are different references if both states need to be built.
Use a viewport capture for a specific visible arrangement and a full-page capture when overall page structure matters. Pair them when each communicates something different. A screenshot is static: add a short note for transitions, interactions, or behavior that cannot be inferred from the image.

Label images and add implementation context
Give each file a clear page name plus a state or viewport label, such as Pricing—mobile—menu open. State the viewport dimensions or device category wherever responsive behavior matters. Keep annotations focused on details that are not self-evident: intended behavior, spacing, content, or visual intent.

For teams using Figma, Dev Mode supports inspection, comparisons, annotations, measurements, and readiness statuses. Its current help documentation says Dev Mode is available on paid plans and requires a Full or Dev seat; confirm the current access requirements for your team before depending on that workflow. - Identify the page and state shown.
- Include viewport dimensions or device category when relevant.
- Use both viewport and full-page captures when they serve distinct review purposes.
- Annotate interactions or transitions a static image cannot show.
- Link clearly to the approved design or implementation reference.
- If you use Figma Dev Mode, mark which designs are ready for development.
