A useful QA screenshot needs context beside it: the browser and version, operating system and version, viewport width and height in CSS pixels, page URL and state, and whether the image shows the viewport, the full page, or one element. Pixels alone do not reliably identify the environment that produced a bug.
What to include with a QA screenshot
Put a compact environment block next to the attachment, then describe how to reproduce the issue. WebKit’s Bug Report Guidelines ask for details such as the WebKit version, platform, operating-system version, and URL when possible. Google’s browser bug guidance notes that a problem may depend on an operating system or display characteristic.

- Browser: product and version; add the rendering engine and version if it is known and relevant.
- Operating system/platform: name and version.
- Viewport: width × height in CSS pixels. Include portrait or landscape orientation when it matters.
- Device or display condition: note relevant emulation, scaling, or display characteristics.
- Page URL: include the route or link if it can be shared.
- Steps and page state: actions taken, relevant selections or content, and the state immediately before capture.
- Capture scope: viewport, full page, or named element.
Write those details in the report or a clearly labeled caption. Do not expect a screenshot file to communicate the browser version, operating system, or viewport dimensions by itself.

- Steps and state: actions taken and relevant state before capture
- Browser: product and version; engine/version if known and relevant
- OS/platform: name and version
- Viewport: width × height CSS px; orientation if relevant
- Device/display: emulation or display conditions that may affect the result
- Capture scope: viewport / full page / element (identify the element)
- Expected: what should appear
- Actual: what the screenshot shows
- Attachments: screenshot(s); add a short screencast only if sequence or motion helps explain the failure
Capture the right scope in browser developer tools
Chrome DevTools: viewport or full page
In Chrome DevTools Device Mode, enter the required width and height for the responsive viewport. The More options menu provides screenshot actions for the current viewport and for a full-size screenshot that includes content beyond it. Chrome documents this distinction in Device Mode. Menu wording can change, so confirm it in the Chrome version your team uses.
Firefox Developer Tools: full page or element
Firefox Developer Tools can capture a full page. To isolate a particular node, select it in the Inspector and use the context-menu action “Screenshot Node,” as described in Mozilla’s Taking screenshots documentation. Identify the selected element in the report so reviewers know what was intentionally excluded.

Choose scope for the defect
- Viewport: the visible viewport at capture time. Use it for fixed headers, overlays, clipping, or responsive-layout issues visible without scrolling.
- Full page: page content beyond the visible viewport is included. Use it when the defect spans the document or its overall layout matters.
- Element: a selected component or node. Use it when the issue is localized and a whole-page capture would obscure the relevant detail.
Make browser comparisons controlled
When comparing browsers or viewport configurations, record the environment beside each image rather than relying on a single shared caption. Keep the URL, reproduction steps, and relevant page state consistent when the goal is to isolate a rendering difference. Compare browser and version, OS/platform and version, viewport width and height, orientation, and display conditions that may affect the result. This makes it easier to tell an environment-specific defect from a change in test conditions.

If the difference is hard to see, place expected and defective renderings together when possible. WebKit’s guidelines recommend a single screenshot showing both correct and incorrect renderings when the problem is not obvious. A short screencast can clarify a failure that depends on a sequence of actions or unusual activity; Google’s guidance also supports using a video when motion or steps matter.

Troubleshooting incomplete or confusing evidence
- A reviewer cannot tell which environment produced the image: add browser/version, OS/platform/version, and viewport dimensions to a caption or report block.
- The page looks different after capture: document the exact URL, reproduction steps, and page state; then recapture while keeping those conditions consistent.
- A full-page image hides the defect in a large page: attach a viewport or element capture as well, and label each scope.
- An element capture lacks context: name the selected element and include a viewport image if its position or surroundings are relevant.
- A static image does not explain the failure: add a short screencast when the sequence or motion is necessary to reproduce it.
- Developer-tool menu labels differ: use the current browser version’s documentation or menu and record the browser version in the report; capture controls and labels can change.
