For a cookie banner or consent modal, wait for the page’s own consent control, choose the intended action, confirm the overlay has disappeared, and then take the screenshot. In Playwright, that means clicking a page button—not registering a JavaScript-dialog handler. The selector and button wording depend on the site, so verify them for the page you are capturing.
First identify which kind of dialog you need to dismiss
A cookie banner or consent modal is usually HTML rendered as part of the page. Interact with its visible button or other page control, then check that the overlay is gone. A browser-native JavaScript dialog is different: alert, confirm, prompt, and beforeunload use the browser automation framework’s dialog API.
Playwright advises explicitly waiting for a predictable overlay and dismissing it as part of the normal flow rather than relying on a generic locator handler. See the Playwright Page API and its dialog documentation.
Playwright: dismiss the consent UI, verify, then capture
Use a locator that matches the actual consent choice you intend to make. The example below is illustrative: it does not identify a universal consent button, and a site may offer separate choices such as accepting all cookies, rejecting optional cookies, or managing preferences.

- Navigate to the target page.
- Wait until the specific consent button is visible and click it.
- Wait until the consent interface is hidden.
- Capture the page after the post-consent content is visible.

Avoid choosing “accept” automatically if your task requires a different consent state. Waiting for the button and then its disappearance also makes the screenshot’s intended state explicit.
Handle browser-native JavaScript dialogs separately
If the page opens a native JavaScript dialog, register the appropriate Playwright dialog handler and decide whether to accept or dismiss it. Without handling a dialog that blocks the page, later actions can stall. This mechanism does not click or dismiss an HTML cookie banner; use the page locator flow above for that.
Consult Playwright’s dialog documentation for the framework’s dialog API and the choice between accepting and dismissing. Choose the response appropriate to the page and task rather than treating all dialogs alike.

Capture the full page or a specific element
Use a page screenshot when you need the page as a whole, as in page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true }). If the result should show only one component, capture that element instead; first ensure the selected element is visible in the intended post-consent state.
Puppeteer also documents page and element capture: Puppeteer Screenshots. Its guide uses Page.screenshot() for a page and ElementHandle.screenshot() for a selected element. The guide’s networkidle2 navigation example is one possible wait condition, not proof that every site’s content or consent interface is ready. In either framework, wait for the relevant page state rather than assuming navigation completion alone is sufficient.

Common problems and practical fixes
- The click times out: the locator may not match the button, the consent UI may not have appeared yet, or the button may not be visible. Inspect the page and wait for the actual control before clicking.
- The screenshot still contains the overlay: capture may be happening before dismissal completes, or the click may have selected a preference action that leaves the interface open. Wait for the overlay or button to become hidden, then confirm the content you want is visible.
- The script hangs after an action: check whether a native JavaScript dialog is blocking the page. Handle it through Playwright’s dialog mechanism; do not use that mechanism for an HTML banner.
- The page never becomes idle: ongoing network activity can make an idle-based wait unsuitable. Use a site-specific readiness condition, such as visibility of the page content needed in the screenshot.
- The selected consent action is wrong for the task: replace the illustrative locator with a verified control for the intended choice. Button names and available choices vary between sites.
