Use Selenium to open the search results page, wait for the content you need, then call Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) through Selenium’s execute_cdp_cmd. Measure the document with Page.getLayoutMetrics and pass those dimensions to Page.captureScreenshot with captureBeyondViewport enabled. Decode the returned base64 data and save it as a PNG. A standard Selenium window screenshot captures the current window; it does not by itself request a full-document image.
Capture a full-page SERP in Python
This example uses Chrome’s CDP interface through Selenium. It adapts to either cssContentSize or contentSize in the layout-metrics response; CDP metric names and command support can vary by browser version, so check the response from your installed Chrome.

driver.quit()The example requests headless operation and sets a reproducible viewport, but headless mode is not what makes the capture full-page. The CDP clip and captureBeyondViewport setting do that. Selenium documents execute_cdp_cmd(cmd, cmd_args) as its bridge for sending CDP commands; Chrome’s protocol documents the capture command, clip, image formats, and base64 response (Selenium Chromium WebDriver API; Chrome DevTools Protocol: Page).
Make the page state reproducible before capture
Wait for the content you intend to save
Do not assume navigation completion means every SERP module or image is ready. Use a bounded, page-specific Selenium wait for a result container or other content that matters to your screenshot. Search pages may add modules dynamically, personalize results, or vary by location and session. For repeatable comparisons, hold the viewport, locale, session conditions, wait criteria, and browser version steady.

Handle lazy-loaded content deliberately
If images or modules load only as they approach the viewport, controlled scrolling can trigger them. After scrolling, wait for the page to settle and measure document dimensions again immediately before capture. Scrolling can affect sticky elements and lazy-loading behavior, so it is not a substitute for checking the final page state.
Why use CDP instead of save_screenshot()
Selenium’s standard screenshot methods, such as save_screenshot(), are documented as saving the current window screenshot. CDP’s Page.captureScreenshot accepts a document-sized clip and has a separate captureBeyondViewport option. The protocol reference currently marks that option experimental and gives it a default of false, so set it explicitly and validate behavior against the Chrome/CDP version installed (Page protocol reference; Selenium API).
Common failures and fixes
- Only the visible viewport appears: confirm that the clip uses the measured document width and height, begins at
x: 0andy: 0, and thatcaptureBeyondViewportistrue. - No content dimensions are found: inspect the keys returned by
Page.getLayoutMetrics. The example checkscssContentSizeandcontentSize, but protocol fields can change; use the field exposed by your installed version rather than assuming one name works everywhere. - Screenshot ends before a result or image appears: add a bounded wait for the relevant content. If the page uses lazy loading, scroll through the required area, wait for it to settle, and remeasure before capture.
- CDP command or parameter is rejected: check the installed Chrome and Selenium versions and the corresponding protocol shape. The tip-of-tree CDP documentation changes and may not be backward-compatible (CDP overview).
- Capture is too large or fails on a very long page: full-document images can use substantial memory. Consider capturing viewport-sized sections and stitching them as a fallback. Stitched output can show seams, duplicate or displaced sticky overlays, and timing differences between sections.
Performance, reliability, and responsible use
Use the smallest viewport and document area that meet the comparison need, and avoid capturing before dynamic content settles. A full-page image grows with page dimensions, which can increase memory use and make capture less reliable on unusually long documents. Viewport-by-viewport capture may reduce the size of each individual capture, but stitching adds complexity and can introduce visual artifacts.

A SERP screenshot records one browser state, not a timeless or necessarily universal set of results. For meaningful comparisons, record the browser version and keep viewport, locale, session, and capture timing consistent. Respect the search engine’s terms and applicable access rules when automating results-page collection.
