For a repeatable batch, run a Node.js script with Puppeteer in a Docker container that includes Chrome. Read URLs from a file, capture them with controlled readiness and concurrency, and write the images to a host directory mounted into the container. Use Chrome’s command-line screenshot flag for a one-off capture; Puppeteer is the better fit when you need per-URL filenames, full-page images, error handling, or batch control.
Choose Chrome CLI or Puppeteer
One URL: Chrome’s headless command line
Chrome’s headless CLI can capture one page without a script:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 https://example.com
It writes screenshot.png to the current working directory. The documented window size controls the viewport. If you run the command repeatedly in the same directory, the default filename repeats, so move or rename each result or use separate working directories. Chrome’s headless reference was last updated on 2024-10-21 UTC: Chrome Headless command-line reference.
Many URLs: Puppeteer
For a batch, a script can set a consistent viewport, choose when to capture, create unique filenames, and continue after an individual URL fails. The official Puppeteer screenshot guide demonstrates navigating before calling Page.screenshot(): Puppeteer screenshots. The example below uses fullPage: true to request a full-page image; check the screenshot options for the Puppeteer version you install.

Create the batch script
This example reads one URL per line from urls.txt, captures sequentially, and saves PNGs under out/. It uses a new page for each URL, reports failures without abandoning the rest of the list, and closes pages and the browser even if an error occurs.
Project files
Create package.json:
{
"type": "module",
"dependencies": {
"puppeteer": "25.12.0"
}
}
Create urls.txt:
https://example.com
https://developer.chrome.com/
https://pptr.dev/
Then create capture.mjs:
import fs from 'node:fs/promises';
import path from 'node:path';
import crypto from 'node:crypto';
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const inputPath = process.env.URLS_FILE ?? '/usr/src/app/urls.txt';
const outputDir = process.env.OUTPUT_DIR ?? '/usr/src/app/out';
const width = Number(process.env.VIEWPORT_WIDTH ?? 1280);
const height = Number(process.env.VIEWPORT_HEIGHT ?? 900);
const timeout = Number(process.env.NAVIGATION_TIMEOUT_MS ?? 45000);
const urls = (await fs.readFile(inputPath, 'utf8'))
.split(/r?n/)
.map(line => line.trim())
.filter(line => line && !line.startsWith('#'));
await fs.mkdir(outputDir, { recursive: true });
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
for (const [index, rawUrl] of urls.entries()) {
let page;
try {
const parsed = new URL(rawUrl);
if (!['http:', 'https:'].includes(parsed.protocol)) {
throw new Error(`Unsupported URL protocol: ${parsed.protocol}`);
}
page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width, height, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto(parsed.href, {
waitUntil: 'networkidle2',
timeout
});
// Change to false for a viewport-only image.
const fullPage = true;
const hash = crypto.createHash('sha256').update(parsed.href).digest('hex').slice(0, 10);
const filename = `${String(index + 1).padStart(4, '0')}-${hash}.png`;
const outputPath = path.join(outputDir, filename);
await page.screenshot({ path: outputPath, type: 'png', fullPage });
console.log(`OK ${parsed.href} -> ${outputPath}`);
} catch (error) {
console.error(`FAILED ${rawUrl}: ${error.message}`);
} finally {
if (page) await page.close();
}
}
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The index plus URL hash avoids overwriting files when identical URLs occur in the input, while avoiding unsafe URL text in filenames. The script expects HTTP or HTTPS URLs. It takes one screenshot at a time: that is a deliberate, simple starting point, not a throughput benchmark. For higher volume, add a small configurable concurrency limit only after confirming the container and target sites can handle it.
Run Puppeteer in Docker
Puppeteer’s official Docker image includes Chrome for Testing, its required dependencies, and a compatible pre-installed Puppeteer version. Its current Docker guide shows the ghcr.io/puppeteer/puppeteer image and documents that sandbox mode requires the SYS_ADMIN capability. Use the documented sandboxed configuration rather than casually disabling Chrome’s sandbox. See Puppeteer Docker guide for the current image tags and version compatibility.

package.json,capture.mjs, andurls.txtin one project directory. Install dependencies if you also want to run the script outside Docker; inside the official image, ensure the Puppeteer version in your package matches the image’s installed version.Rank #2

Set readiness, viewport, and screenshot behavior
Choose a readiness condition that fits the site
The sample waits for networkidle2, a Puppeteer navigation option also demonstrated in its screenshot guide. It can be useful when requests settle, but it is not a universal signal that a page looks finished. Analytics, long polling, client-side rendering, lazy images, authentication, or consent dialogs can affect what appears in the capture.

- Intel Core i5-6500T Quad Core up to 3.1Ghz Turbo
- 8GB DDR4 Memory + 240GB Solid State Drive
- Windows 10 Professional 64-Bit | Dual Monitor Support VGA + DisplayPort
If the page has a reliable element that signals the content is ready, wait for that selector after navigation with await page.waitForSelector('.content-ready', { timeout: 15000 }); and replace the sample selector with the one that applies to your site. A controlled delay can help a known animation or delayed render, but it adds time without proving that all content loaded. Neither a fixed delay nor a navigation timeout guarantees a visually complete page.
Viewport-only versus full-page
The sample sets a 1280-by-900 CSS-pixel viewport and asks Puppeteer for a full-page screenshot. Set fullPage to false for only the visible viewport. Keep viewport dimensions consistent across a batch if you intend to compare captures; responsive layouts can differ substantially at other sizes.
CLI timing options
Chrome’s CLI offers --timeout as a maximum wait before capture, even if the page is still loading, and --virtual-time-budget to advance time-dependent code in virtual time. These adjust timing; they do not ensure images or interaction-dependent components rendered correctly. See the Chrome Headless command-line reference for syntax and current behavior.
Make the batch dependable
-
Keep the output mounted. A container’s writable layer is disposable when the container is removed. Bind-mount a host directory and verify that the script writes to the mounted path. A community example illustrates this pattern with a volume mount: NeverMendel’s chrome-headless-screenshots example.

-
Use collision-resistant filenames. Avoid raw URLs as filenames: they can contain unsafe characters, long query strings, or equivalent paths on different hosts. The sample combines an input index and short hash.
-
Keep concurrency bounded. A browser page per URL is straightforward but serial. If you parallelize, cap the number of open pages, record failures individually, and monitor memory and CPU. The cited documentation does not establish a fixed throughput; page weight, scripts, network, container limits, and concurrency all affect runtime.
-
Respect site access boundaries. Login walls, bot checks, rate limits, and site terms can prevent or restrict automated access. This workflow does not bypass access controls.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome exits with a sandbox or permission error | The container lacks the capability required for Puppeteer’s documented sandboxed setup. | Use the official Puppeteer image and its documented --cap-add=SYS_ADMIN configuration. Avoid disabling the sandbox as a routine workaround; see the Docker guide. |
| Container exits before child processes are cleaned up | Browser child processes may not be managed cleanly by the container’s init process. | Use Docker’s --init option as in the example, or follow the guide’s custom-entrypoint approach. |
| Screenshot is blank, incomplete, or missing late-loading content | The page was captured before its relevant content rendered, or access was restricted. | Inspect the URL and logs, select a target-specific readiness condition, and check whether authentication, consent, bot checks, or lazy loading affects the page. A timeout is only a ceiling. |
| No files appear on the host | The output path may be outside the mounted directory, or the host directory may not exist. | Create out/, verify the -v "$PWD:/usr/src/app" mount, and confirm OUTPUT_DIR points inside that mount. |
| Several captures overwrite one another | The same fixed output name was reused. | Use a unique index or hash per URL, or separate output directories. The CLI’s default filename is screenshot.png. |
| Navigation times out on a page that appears usable | Persistent requests can prevent the chosen network-idle condition, or the configured timeout is too short for that URL. | Choose readiness based on the content you need rather than waiting for all network activity to stop; adjust the timeout for the page and log failures for later review. |
| Full-page option behaves differently than expected | Screenshot options may differ with the installed Puppeteer version or target page. | Check the official screenshot API documentation for the exact installed version and validate the result on representative pages. |

ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request alternative for a URL; its API can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, save one page as WebP with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and capture options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Can I use the Chrome command line for a list of URLs?
You can repeat Chrome’s headless screenshot command, but you must manage a distinct output location or name for each run. A Puppeteer loop provides batch-specific naming and per-URL error handling.
Does a full-page capture guarantee every image is loaded?
No. Full-page capture controls the captured page extent, not whether lazy-loaded or interaction-dependent content rendered. Choose and validate readiness behavior for the pages you target.
Can Docker screenshots access pages that require a login?
Only if you arrange authorized authentication for the browser session. The example does not configure login, cookies, or access-control workarounds; follow the site’s terms and access requirements.
