Use page.screenshot() for a page-wide capture. The animations option accepts 'disabled' to fast-forward finite animations to their end state. This also fires transitionend for transitions that finish this way. See the Playwright Page screenshot API.

Capture only an animated element

Use the option in a visual regression test
expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive screenshots match, then compares the last captured image with the expected snapshot. Its animations option defaults to 'disabled'; stating it explicitly makes the intended completed-animation capture clear:

An infinite animation has no completion point, so Playwright does not wait for it to finish. With animations: 'disabled', Playwright cancels infinite animations at their initial state for the screenshot, then restarts them after capture. If you need a particular intermediate frame or application-specific state, arrange that state in your application or test; the screenshot option does not provide a universal elapsed-time setting for choosing a frame.

Choose whether to normalize or preserve animation
- Use
'disabled'when a finite animation should be shown at its completed state or when a visual test should avoid capturing a changing frame. - Use
'allow'when you want Playwright to leave animation behavior untouched and capture whatever frame is present at screenshot time. - Choose the capture scope separately:
page.screenshot()captures a page, whilelocator.screenshot()targets an element.
Troubleshoot unexpected screenshots
- The finite transition still looks unfinished: confirm that
animations: 'disabled'is on the screenshot call that actually captures the image. If you use an assertion, check its screenshot options as well. - An infinite spinner or marquee appears at its start: that is expected with
'disabled'; infinite animations are canceled at their initial state for the capture. Control the UI or animation in the test if you need another state. - You expected only one component but got a page capture: call
screenshot()on the target locator instead ofpage. - A visual assertion waits or fails despite animation handling: the assertion also waits for two consecutive screenshots to match. Other changing page content can still prevent stable captures; identify and control that content in the test.
Version context
Playwright release notes list screenshot animation handling among options added in version 1.20 for page, locator, and element-handle screenshot APIs. Treat the current API documentation as authoritative for present behavior, and check the version installed in your project rather than assuming a minimum version from that historical release note.
