Set an explicit viewport with page.setViewport() before navigating, then keep the viewport and screenshot settings the same for each capture. Choose fullPage deliberately: its default is false, so a normal screenshot shows the visible viewport, while fullPage: true captures the whole page.
Set the viewport before you navigate
Use explicit width and height in CSS pixels, and set deviceScaleFactor explicitly to control output pixel density. This illustrative desktop example uses 1280 by 800 at scale factor 1; it is a choice, not a Puppeteer standard. Puppeteer’s API example uses 640 by 480 at scale factor 1. Choose dimensions that suit the layout or test you need, and reuse them across runs.

const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({
width: 1280,
height: 800,
deviceScaleFactor: 1,
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Set the viewport first because some websites do not expect their size to change after navigation. Puppeteer’s documentation also notes that changing some emulation fields, including isMobile or hasTouch, may reload the page. The viewport API accepts null to reset the viewport; for repeatable captures, avoid resetting it between setup and capture. See the Page.setViewport() method and Viewport interface.

| Goal | Setting | What it captures |
|---|---|---|
| Consistent desktop layout | Set fixed width, height, and deviceScaleFactor |
A repeatable configured viewport; there is no universal prescribed size. |
| Mobile layout | Set relevant viewport emulation fields or use page.emulate(device) |
A device profile combining viewport and user-agent settings. Configure it before navigation. |
| Visible viewport only | page.screenshot() |
The visible area; fullPage defaults to false. |
| Entire page | page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) |
The full page rather than only the visible viewport. |
| Specific rectangle | Use the screenshot clip option |
The selected region. |
| One element | Use ElementHandle.screenshot() |
The element; Puppeteer attempts to scroll a hidden element into view by default. |
The viewport also supports isMobile, hasTouch, and isLandscape. Keep any of these settings that affect your target consistent between captures. For responsive testing, define a small set of named viewport profiles—such as desktop and mobile—and reuse each profile’s complete settings rather than treating one size as universal. The Puppeteer screenshot guide and ScreenshotOptions interface document capture choices.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Make the capture sequence repeatable
- Start a fresh page or define its state. Avoid carrying viewport or page state over from an unrelated capture.
- Set viewport and emulation. Apply width, height, device scale factor, and any mobile, touch, or orientation fields before navigation.
- Navigate and wait for the page state you need.
networkidle2is used in Puppeteer’s basic example, but it does not guarantee that every site’s dynamic content, animations, fonts, or lazy-loaded assets have settled. - Wait for application-specific content when needed. If the screenshot depends on a particular component, wait for a meaningful selector or application state before capture.
- Choose the capture bounds. Use the default viewport screenshot,
fullPage: true,clip, or an element screenshot according to the intended artifact. - Close the browser even on failure. A
finallyblock, as in the example, prevents a failed navigation or screenshot from leaving the browser process running.
What a fixed viewport does—and does not—guarantee
Explicit viewport settings standardize the configured page dimensions and emulation inputs. They do not, by themselves, guarantee pixel-identical screenshots across different environments or across runs when page content changes. Fonts, browser and operating-system rendering, loaded assets, dynamic data, animations, and timing can still affect pixels. For visual comparisons, keep the browser environment and page state stable as well as the viewport, and wait for the content relevant to the comparison.
Troubleshoot inconsistent or unexpected screenshots
- Layout differs between runs: Check that
setViewport()runs beforegoto(), and that all captures use the same width, height, scale factor, and relevant emulation fields. - Image dimensions are unexpectedly large or small: Confirm the CSS-pixel viewport and explicitly set
deviceScaleFactor. A scale factor changes output pixel density; it is distinct from the CSS viewport dimensions. - The screenshot cuts off below the fold: The default is viewport-only. Use
{ fullPage: true }when the whole page is required. - A full-page or element capture includes the wrong area: For a bounded region use
clip; for a specific element use its handle’s screenshot method. Check the selected bounds and whether the element is present and visible. - Content is missing despite a successful navigation: The navigation wait may finish before application rendering, lazy assets, or fonts are ready. Wait for a meaningful selector or state before taking the screenshot.
- The page changes or reloads after emulation: Apply mobile or touch-related settings before navigation. Puppeteer documents that some viewport changes can trigger a reload.

FAQ
Does Puppeteer have a standard viewport size?
No universal standard is established by the cited API documentation. Pick dimensions for your target design or test profile and keep them fixed.
Can a fixed viewport guarantee identical pixels?
No. It fixes configured viewport inputs, not changes in page content or rendering across environments.
