To stream Terraria gameplay from a multiplayer world on YouTube Live, run the world with either Host & Play or a dedicated server, capture the gameplay with streaming software, and connect that software to a YouTube encoder stream. Keep two separate archives: the Terraria world save, which preserves the playable world, and a local video recording, which backs up the broadcast. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all.

What “archive” means for a Terraria stream

There are two different things you may want to preserve. The Terraria world file is the save that contains the world and its changes; a YouTube replay is a video of what viewers saw during the broadcast. Saving one does not save the other. Back up the world file before changing server settings or upgrading, and record the broadcast locally if you need a dependable video copy.

A Terraria server does not itself send gameplay to YouTube. It runs the multiplayer world; an encoder captures the game on a computer and sends the video and audio to YouTube Live.

Choose how to host the multiplayer world

Option Best suited to What to know
Host & Play A short co-op session where a player can host while playing. The Terraria server guide describes this as the simplest approach for online co-op. It is not the same as a world that runs independently of the hosting player.
Dedicated server A world that should run separately so a specific player does not have to remain connected. The community-maintained Official Terraria Wiki says a server can run the world on a separate computer without requiring any particular player to stay connected. Network setup may require attention to the server port and firewall.

Terraria’s community wiki lists TCP port 7777 as the default dedicated-server port. If players outside your local network need to connect, home-router NAT or firewall rules may need configuration. Verify the instructions against the Terraria version installed: the community setup guide warns that it may be outdated, and exact commands can vary by version.

Prepare the world and protect the save

  1. Back up the world file. Make a separate copy before editing configuration, changing server versions, or opening the world for a long session.
  2. Select the existing world. Check the server’s world selection so it loads the intended save rather than generating a new world by mistake.
  3. Check the installed version’s shutdown procedure. The available setup guidance warns that closing without the appropriate save-and-exit procedure can lose recent changes. Do not assume a command from another version is current; confirm the safe shutdown instruction for your server version.
  4. Confirm multiplayer connectivity before going live. Have a player join and verify that the correct world loads. If remote players cannot connect, check the server process, firewall permissions, and—when hosting behind a home router—NAT or port forwarding for the configured port.

Connect Terraria gameplay to YouTube Live

  1. Enable live streaming for your YouTube channel. YouTube may require channel verification or eligibility steps; check the current YouTube Studio status for the channel before planning an event.
  2. Create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Choose the encoder workflow rather than a webcam-only broadcast. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key for the encoder connection.
  3. Configure your streaming software. Add the YouTube stream URL and stream key, then capture the Terraria game window or display and select the audio sources you intend to broadcast. Use the software’s game-capture option if available; otherwise, test window or display capture and check that menus, gameplay, and audio are all present.
  4. Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password. Do not show it on stream, paste it into chat, or share a screenshot that exposes it. If it is disclosed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting again.
  5. Check the preview before going live. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that the image is moving, game audio is audible, microphone levels are appropriate if you are speaking, and the correct event is selected. YouTube recommends testing the setup and monitoring audio and video quality.
  6. Start the broadcast from the encoder and verify the live status. Confirm that the event is actually live in YouTube Studio rather than relying only on the encoder’s local status indicator.

Use the encoder’s normal streaming settings unless you have a reason to change them, and confirm the supported resolution and bitrate in the current YouTube guidance and your encoder. The available Terraria and YouTube information here does not establish a single bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval that is right for every connection and channel, so avoid copying a setting without checking the current YouTube recommendation for your chosen output.

Save a replay without risking the whole session

YouTube Help says that a live stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived. It also warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. The 12-hour threshold is YouTube’s archive guidance, not a Terraria-specific limit or a guarantee that every shorter stream will be preserved.

Terraria - Xbox 360 (Renewed)
  • Classic Terraria gameplay now with console specific control system, and a friendly crafting/item interface.
  • Online multiplayer with you to 8 players! Split-screen multiplayer 2-4 players.
  • New Enemies and Final Boss, as well as Ultimate Weapons, new Armors and Pets never seen before!
  • Hundreds of weapons, armor and other items to craft, with character advancement.
  • Over 25 different block types to build whatever you imagine!
  • Record locally as well as streaming. Enable local recording in the encoder and check that the file is growing during the broadcast. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as backup.
  • For a long playthrough, split the broadcast. Stop and start separate YouTube events before reaching the 12-hour boundary, rather than depending on a single longer broadcast to produce a replay.
  • Verify both copies afterward. Check that the YouTube replay is available and plays, and open the local recording to confirm it is usable. Keep the Terraria world backup separate from both video files.

Check copyright and audio before going live

YouTube scans live streams for third-party copyrighted material. A match can interrupt or terminate a live broadcast, and an archived stream can receive a Content ID claim after the event. YouTube’s livestream terms require you to have the necessary rights for content used live and in the archive, including music.

  • Review the game, voice chat, overlays, and any other audio or video sources you plan to include.
  • Avoid adding background music unless you have rights that cover both the livestream and its archived replay.
  • If you use music or other licensed material, confirm that the license permits livestreaming and on-demand replay on YouTube.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Players cannot join the Terraria world. The server is not running, the wrong world or port is selected, or local firewall/router configuration blocks connections. Confirm the server process and selected world, check firewall permissions, and verify the configured port. The community wiki lists TCP 7777 as the default; confirm the setting for your installed version.
The wrong or a newly generated world appears. The server is pointed at a different world or no existing world was selected. Stop and inspect the server’s world selection before continuing. Restore from the backup if the intended save was changed or overwritten.
YouTube does not show the incoming stream. The encoder may have the wrong event, stream URL, or key, or the channel may not be enabled to stream. Check channel live-stream eligibility in YouTube Studio, confirm the selected event, and re-enter the current stream URL and key. Keep the key private.
The preview has no game image or audio. The encoder may be capturing the wrong window or using the wrong audio source. Check the selected capture source and audio devices, then test again in the Live Control Room before going live.
The local recording is missing or unusable. Local recording may not have been enabled, or the file may not have completed correctly. Check during the stream that the file is growing, and open the finished file after the event. Keep adequate local storage available for the recording.
A live broadcast is interrupted or the replay receives a claim. YouTube may have detected third-party copyrighted material. Review the audio and video sources and make sure you have the rights required for both live use and replay.
The YouTube replay is unavailable after a very long stream. The broadcast may have exceeded YouTube’s stated 12-hour archive threshold. Use a local recording as backup and split future long sessions into separate events before that boundary.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is for looping uploaded videos to YouTube, not capturing a live Terraria server or broadcasting a camera. If you have a prerecorded Terraria session and want that video to loop as a YouTube stream, the workflow is: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud service keeps that uploaded video running without a home computer, OBS, or home connection staying on; it supports the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or current plan details, then start the free day.
