To sync external audio with iPhone video, record the iPhone’s reference audio alongside the separate recording, make a clear clap or slate visible to the camera, then align the clips in your editor. In Final Cut Pro for Mac, Clip > Synchronize Clips can match the clips using their audio waveforms. Check the alignment before muting the iPhone track and using the clean recording.
Record both tracks with a clear sync point
- Record video on the iPhone with its scratch audio enabled. That camera audio is a reference for alignment, even if you will not use it in the finished video.
- Record the desired sound on the external recorder. Starting both recordings before the action gives you a shared stretch of audio to match.
- Make one clear clap or slate in view of the iPhone. The picture captures the instant of contact, while both recordings capture its sharp sound. Apple’s filmmaking curriculum recommends using a slate and syncing the tracks to the clap: Apple’s filmmaking curriculum. A hand clap works for the same basic purpose; a physical film clapperboard slate is a convenience for repeat shoots or coordinated productions, not a requirement.
Sync the clips in Final Cut Pro for Mac
- Transfer the iPhone video and external audio file into your Final Cut Pro project.
- Select the relevant video and audio clips in the browser.
- Choose Clip > Synchronize Clips, then select Use audio for synchronization to align them by their waveforms. Apple documents additional sync references, including markers, timecode, and file creation date, in its Final Cut Pro for Mac user guide.
- Review the result around the beginning of the take and again later. If the tracks do not line up, use the clap or another clear marker as a reference, or adjust the external audio’s position manually in your editor.
- After confirming sync, use the external recording as the program audio and mute or disable the iPhone scratch track. Final Cut Pro also offers an option to disable audio components on the audiovisual clips after synchronizing.
Automatic waveform matching is useful when both files contain the same sound, but it is not guaranteed to work with every recording. Apple cautions in its Final Cut Pro for Mac user guide: “Some audio recordings are not suited for use with this feature.” Keeping the clap in the take gives you a clear fallback.
Choose where to record the external microphone
| Approach | What happens | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Record through a recognized external microphone connected to the iPhone | Final Cut Camera lets the operator choose an audio input and monitor its input level. If the attached microphone is recognized and selected, the sound is recorded with the video. | This can avoid aligning a separate audio file later, but depends on the connected hardware being recognized and compatible. Apple’s documentation does not give a universal list of supported microphones or adapters: Final Cut Camera user guide. |
| Record separately on an external recorder | The iPhone captures reference audio while the recorder creates a separate clean audio file; align the files in editing. | This preserves a dual-system recording workflow but requires a sync step using waveforms, a clap or marker, or timecode. |
Pick the right alignment method
| Method | Best suited to | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Waveform matching | A one-camera take where the camera and recorder tracks contain matching sound. | It is convenient, but some recordings are not suited to automatic analysis. Keep a clear clap or marker as a backup. |
| Clap or clip marker | A straightforward sync point in a single take, or a fallback when waveform analysis does not align the clips. | A clap should be visible in the video and audible in both recordings. A marker can provide a reference when you need to align manually. |
| External timecode | Coordinated or multi-camera production using a shared timing reference. | Apple documents external timecode input to Final Cut Camera through a connected generator over USB-C. This is a specialist setup, not a prerequisite for syncing ordinary dialogue. |
When timecode and genlock matter
External timecode can help coordinate recordings when multiple cameras need a common timing reference. Apple documents timecode input to Final Cut Camera using a connected generator over USB-C. Apple also documents genlock with Final Cut Camera on iPhone 17 Pro or later; genlock synchronizes camera or display frame timing for specialized production contexts. Neither feature is needed for the usual one-iPhone, one-recorder dialogue workflow. See Apple’s Final Cut Camera user guide for the documented capabilities and setup context.
