Fortnite Crew vs. V-Bucks: Which Is Better for Buying Skins?

Crew suits players who want its monthly cosmetics and premium pass access; buying V-Bucks suits players focused on one skin or a one-time spend.

Fortnite Crew is usually the better deal if you want its monthly Crew Pack and will use the premium pass access; buying V-Bucks is better if you want one specific skin, only need a set amount of currency, or want to avoid a subscription. Crew grants 800 V-Bucks per active month—the same nominal amount as the Battle Royale Battle Pass costs from March 19, 2026—but its other benefits are worthwhile only if you actually want them.

What you get with Fortnite Crew and V-Bucks

Fortnite Crew is a recurring subscription. Epic currently lists 800 V-Bucks each active month, a monthly exclusive Crew Pack, and premium access to the passes included in its offer while the subscription is active. Benefits can change, so check the live offer in game or on Epic’s Fortnite Crew page before subscribing.

Buying V-Bucks gives you currency to spend in Fortnite without signing up for Crew. Epic’s US Epic Games Store listing currently shows these bundles:

2,400 $22.99
4,500 $36.99

Which option is better for your situation?

Choose Crew if you want its other benefits

Crew is a stronger fit if you play regularly, want the current month’s exclusive outfit bundle, and expect to use one or more of the premium passes included in the offer. The Battle Royale Battle Pass costs 800 V-Bucks starting March 19, 2026, so one active Crew month provides the same nominal amount of currency as that pass costs, alongside Crew’s other benefits. Those benefits are not cash or a refund, though: they matter only if you value the cosmetics and pass access for yourself. Epic explains the Battle Pass cost.

Buy V-Bucks if you have one skin in mind

A direct V-Bucks purchase is simpler when you want a particular Item Shop item, do not care about the Crew Pack or premium passes, or want a one-time spend rather than an automatic renewal. You can also get V-Bucks through pass progression or official physical V-Bucks cards. Epic says cards are sold by authorized retailers and online; availability and redemption rules can depend on country. Epic’s guide lists ways to get V-Bucks.

Check subscription renewal and Battle Pass access

Crew renews automatically until cancelled. Cancelling stops the next renewal, but the benefits remain available through the end of the current billing period; Epic’s terms say content already received or earned is retained. However, for Crew subscribers who joined after December 1, 2024, claiming premium Battle Pass rewards requires an active subscription. Do not assume cancelling Crew gives continued premium reward access through the rest of a pass season. Read Epic’s Crew subscription terms and Epic’s explanation of Battle Pass access after cancellation.

Check platform and region before paying

V-Bucks are not universally portable across every platform. Epic warns that Crew V-Bucks may not be redeemable on platforms other than the subscription’s primary platform. Epic Store V-Bucks cannot be used on Nintendo Switch, and physical cards distributed in one country may only be redeemable by accounts registered there. Confirm the specific purchase and account rules for your platform and region before buying. Epic’s End User License Agreement covers card terms.

  • An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

A quick decision checklist

  • How many months would you stay subscribed? Compare the total cost of those months with the V-Bucks you would otherwise buy.
  • Would you want this month’s Crew Pack? If not, do not count it as value.
  • Will you use the included premium pass access? Count it only if you would choose to use that pass.
  • Are you buying for one specific skin? A one-time V-Bucks purchase avoids paying for unrelated subscription benefits.
  • Does the offer work on your platform and in your region? Verify currency redemption and current local pricing before checkout.
  • Are you comfortable with renewal? If not, a direct purchase avoids managing a recurring subscription.

Epic’s pass guide describes pass duration as one season, but the season’s timing does not change Crew’s billing cycle. See Epic’s guide to Fortnite passes.
