Stablecoins do not automatically earn interest just because you hold them. Yield usually comes from a separate service or strategy—such as lending, exchange rewards, or an on-chain vault—and each route adds risks beyond the token’s price stability. Before committing funds, find out who uses the assets, who controls them, how you can withdraw, and what protections apply where you live.
Where stablecoin yield comes from
The word “yield” describes a return, not a single product or source of income. The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) identifies several ways stablecoin-related returns can be generated, including lending to borrowers, placing assets in margin pools, using them in arbitrage or derivatives activity, supplying them to decentralized-finance (DeFi) lending protocols, and provider-funded loyalty programs. Those mechanisms involve different users of the assets and different ways a loss can occur.

A payment stablecoin’s reserves and redemption arrangements do not, by themselves, mean holders receive the income earned on those reserves. A separate service may offer remuneration, but its terms determine whether the holder receives anything and what happens to deposited assets. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) Division of Corporation Finance said on April 4, 2025, that its staff statement addressed a specific category of USD-redeemable stablecoins backed by low-risk, readily liquid reserve assets; it expressly did not address yield-bearing stablecoins. The statement is a staff view, not a Commission rule or binding determination.

A centralized exchange or other service may offer remuneration tied to returns on an issuer’s reserve assets, or rewards funded by market activity. A June 2026 BIS analysis distinguishes these models: reserve-based remuneration tracks policy rates, while activity-based remuneration can be much more volatile. This is a distinction between funding models, not a forecast of any product’s current rate. The exact source of a particular offer needs to be established from its own terms.

Interest-bearing accounts and lending
A crypto-asset interest-bearing account may lend deposited assets to borrowers or otherwise deploy them. The account provider, borrowers, and any intermediaries can all matter to the outcome. The SEC’s February 2022 investor bulletin warns that these accounts do not provide the same protections as bank or credit-union deposits, and that crypto assets sent to the companies are not currently insured. A quoted return should therefore not be read as a bank deposit rate or proof that principal is protected.
On-chain lending and vaults
With on-chain lending, a user supplies assets to a DeFi protocol under its rules and may receive a return associated with borrowing activity. A vault is a smart-contract system that allocates user assets among yield-generating activities. SEC Commissioner Hester M. Peirce described vaults on July 22, 2026, as facilitating deployment through activities including staking and lending. Some allocations may be programmatic; in other arrangements, a person or group may have discretion over where assets go. The label “vault” does not tell you which arrangement applies or establish that it is safe.
Compare the arrangement, not just the advertised return
These routes cannot be ranked by yield alone. The sources below describe general mechanisms, not standard terms for every provider or protocol; custody, rates, withdrawal conditions, and protections depend on the particular product and jurisdiction.

| Route | Possible source of return | What to establish before using it |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange or service remuneration | Returns associated with issuer reserves, market activity, or provider-funded rewards, depending on the arrangement (BIS, June 2026). | Whether the offer is reserve-linked or activity-funded; who holds and deploys the assets; what terms govern withdrawals. Product-specific terms are not stated in the BIS model analysis. |
| Crypto interest-bearing account | Lending or other deployment of deposited crypto assets (SEC investor bulletin, February 2022). | Who borrows or uses the assets, whether the provider can re-lend them, the account’s custody and insolvency treatment, and withdrawal restrictions. Product-specific terms are not stated in the SEC bulletin. |
| On-chain lending | DeFi lending activity, with returns associated with supplying assets to a protocol (BIS yield-model analysis). | The protocol’s rules and dependencies, the route to withdraw, and how collateral and liquidation work. Specific protocol terms are not stated in the BIS analysis. |
| Smart-contract vault | Allocation to activities such as lending or staking (SEC Commissioner Peirce, July 22, 2026). | Whether allocation is programmatic or discretionary, who can change strategy or contract settings, and how withdrawals work. Terms vary by vault and are not established by the SEC statement. |
Check these risks before committing assets
Custody, insolvency, and recovery
Identify who controls the stablecoins after you deposit or supply them, and what contractual or protocol rules apply if a company or intermediary fails. Ask whether assets may be lent, rehypothecated, pooled, or otherwise deployed, and what claim you would have if they are not returned. Do not assume that an account balance has the protections of a bank or credit-union deposit: the SEC’s February 2022 bulletin says crypto assets sent to these companies are not currently insured, and recovery after a failure may be uncertain.
Borrowers, collateral, and the actual source of return
Ask directly what funds the return: borrower interest, margin or derivatives activity, reserve-related remuneration, or rewards paid by the provider. If borrowers or trading activity are involved, find out who the counterparties are, what collateral supports obligations, and how collateral is valued and liquidated. The more intermediaries or uses of assets involved, the more places there may be for losses or delays to arise.
Liquidity and withdrawal conditions
Read the withdrawal terms rather than relying on the word “redeemable.” Check for lockups, notice periods, minimums, withdrawal queues, gates, fees, or circumstances in which withdrawals can be delayed or suspended. Consider whether the arrangement can return the stablecoin promptly during market stress, and what happens if the underlying market is illiquid. The SEC investor bulletin identifies crypto-market illiquidity and inability to recover losses after fraud, default, or mistakes as relevant risks.

Stablecoin reserves and redemption rights
Check what the token is designed to track, who is eligible to redeem it, and what disclosures are available about reserve assets and reserve maintenance. Stability mechanisms differ, so the risks of one token should not be generalized to another. The SEC’s April 4, 2025 staff statement was narrowly scoped to a category of USD-redeemable stablecoins and expressly excluded yield-bearing stablecoins; it should not be treated as a blanket assessment of algorithmic, non-USD, or yield-bearing products.

Smart-contract code and strategy control
For on-chain lending or a vault, examine which contracts and protocols the strategy depends on, who can upgrade or administer them, and who can alter allocation, leverage, collateral, or liquidation parameters. Find out whether a manager can change the strategy and what happens if a dependency is paused or fails. Smart-contract use does not, on its own, establish safety, and the SEC Commissioner’s description emphasizes that vaults vary in their allocation arrangements.
Rules and protections where you live
Eligibility and legal protections can vary by product and jurisdiction. The cited SEC materials are educational or staff statements, not determinations covering every yield arrangement or country; BIS has also described differing regulatory approaches. Confirm that the service is available to you and understand which legal entity and terms govern your account. For a consequential decision, consider qualified financial or legal advice familiar with your jurisdiction.

Why yield deserves a risk-first approach
Stablecoin use is growing, but growth is not evidence that a particular yield arrangement is safe or sustainable. In an April 2026 note, the Federal Reserve Board reported that stablecoin market capitalization grew by about 50 percent during 2025, and identified complex intermediation chains, vertical integration, and accelerating retail adoption as developments with potential to amplify vulnerabilities. That industry-level figure says nothing about an individual product’s return or safety.
Rates and terms are product- and date-sensitive, and no universal advertised rate establishes what a holder can earn. Treat a stated rate as an offer to investigate, not a guarantee. This article explains general mechanisms and checks; it is not personalized financial or legal advice.
