To switch what viewers see, switch to a different OBS scene. To change the products viewers can browse or open on YouTube, update the Shopping products and pin the current item in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. These are separate controls: changing an OBS scene does not automatically change YouTube Shopping tags or the pinned product.
First, identify which kind of “category” you mean
“Product category” can mean the on-screen segment—such as kitchen, beauty, or tech—or the products shown to viewers through YouTube Shopping. Use OBS scenes for the video layout; use YouTube Studio for the shopping list and pinned product. OBS’s Media Source playlist is different again: it plays media files and does not control Shopping tags.

Switch the on-screen segment with OBS scenes
- Create a scene for each segment. In OBS, use the Scenes dock to add scenes and give them clear names, such as “Kitchen,” “Beauty,” or “Tech.” A scene is a layout that can combine sources such as a camera, capture device, image, text, browser page, or media. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- Build each layout. Add and arrange the sources needed for that category. For example, use an image or text source for a category title or product name, and a camera or capture source for a demonstration. Source types and media playback are covered in the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Switch scenes while live. Select the scene you want viewers to see. For a deliberate handoff, click Studio Mode: the current live scene appears on the right, while the editable preview appears on the left. Prepare the next category in Preview, then click Transition. You can also use a Quick Transition or a configured hotkey. OBS describes this preview/live arrangement in its overview guide.
- Set the transition style. Choose a built-in Cut or Fade, or another transition available in the scene-transition controls, and set its duration before the show. A cut is immediate; a fade provides a gradual visual handoff.
- Rehearse the handoff. Check that the intended camera, product view, labels, and audio are present in each scene before the broadcast. Practice the order in Studio Mode so you can prepare the next layout without putting it on air prematurely.
Change the product viewers can browse or open
YouTube Shopping is managed separately from OBS. YouTube’s controls and eligibility can change, so check the current Live Control Room and your channel’s access before relying on product tagging. YouTube says tagging products from other brands requires program eligibility, and product visibility depends on region and shipping. Its guidance also says third-party products should be meaningfully related to the content and prominently featured. See YouTube Help: Tag products in your live streams and YouTube Help: Shopping affiliate program overview.

In YouTube Studio, open the scheduled or active stream’s Live Control Room and select the Shopping tab.
- Tag and order products. Use the product picker to select the items for the stream. YouTube says the picker’s order is the order viewers see. The current interface is the authority for which products your channel can tag.
- Pin the item being discussed. Pin the product that matches the current segment. On desktop, YouTube documents an option to automatically pin multiple tagged products in sequence; its stated rotation interval is 60 seconds. This timed rotation may not align with your segment changes.
- Make list changes ahead of time where possible. YouTube recommends completing product removals and rearrangements at least 30 minutes before the stream. It warns that product-list updates made during a live stream may not be visible to some existing viewers.
- Coordinate the two controls. Introduce the next segment, switch to its OBS scene, then pin the corresponding product in the Shopping panel. Treat the scene change and product change as separate actions rather than assuming one triggers the other.
What an OBS playlist does—and does not do
If by “playlist” you mean a sequence of prerecorded category clips, an OBS Media Source can play audio or video files; with VLC Media Player installed, it can also use a playlist. That is a playback feature. It is not documented as a way to change YouTube Shopping categories, tags, or the pinned product. For the shopping shelf, use the Live Control Room’s Shopping tools.

Common problems and fixes
- The video changes but the product does not: OBS scene changes do not automatically update YouTube Shopping. Pin the matching product separately in the Live Control Room.
- The product list changes for some viewers but not others: YouTube cautions that live product edits may not be visible to some existing viewers. Prepare ordering and removals before the show when possible.
- Automatic pinning moves at the wrong moment: YouTube documents a 60-second rotation for automatic sequencing on desktop. Pin products manually when you need the displayed item to follow the show’s exact segment timing.
- A product cannot be tagged or seen by the intended audience: Check channel eligibility and the product’s region and shipping availability in YouTube Studio. Third-party product tagging is subject to program eligibility.
- The next layout accidentally goes live before it is ready: Use Studio Mode to prepare it in Preview, verify the sources, then transition when ready.
