How to Add Background Music to Prerecorded Store Promos on YouTube Live

To add background music to a prerecorded store promo on YouTube Live, combine the promo and a properly licensed music track in OBS Studio or render them together in a video editor, then send the finished audio-and-video program to YouTube through an encoder. Use separate OBS sources if you need to adjust music volume independently; render one combined file if the mix is final. Test the preview and confirm the music rights cover the promotion, livestream, territories and any archived replay.

Choose music that is cleared for the whole use

Background music still needs rights clearance. YouTube’s livestream terms make the person providing the stream responsible for necessary rights, including music licensing rights. YouTube’s terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read YouTube’s terms.

For a starting point, check the YouTube Audio Library. YouTube says it knows the tracks in the library to be copyright-safe on YouTube. Check the individual track’s license: some Creative Commons tracks require attribution in the video description. YouTube does not vouch for music from other libraries. For a store promo, also verify that the specific license permits commercial promotional use, livestream distribution, the relevant territories and retention of an archived stream. YouTube does not provide legal guidance about off-platform use.

  • Keep a copy of the license or permission and note any attribution wording you must include.
  • Do not assume that “background,” “royalty-free” or a credit line by itself grants the rights you need.
  • If a rights holder requires Content ID clearance, ask them to allowlist your channel before the broadcast.

Choose how to combine the promo and music

Approach Best when What to consider
Separate sources in OBS You may need to change the music level independently during the stream. More flexible, but check that the promo’s own audio is not duplicating the music or other sound.
One combined video file The mix is settled and you want to test a single finished program. Simpler to play, but music and promo audio are no longer independently adjustable in OBS.

In either case, YouTube receives the encoder’s combined audio-and-video output. OBS supports local media sources, including common formats such as MP4 video and MP3 or WAV audio. If the promo should repeat, enable looping for the promo source and test what happens at the end of the file.

Set up the promo and music in OBS

  1. Create a scene: In OBS Studio, add a scene for the store promo broadcast. Add the promo file as a Media Source and select the local video file.
  2. Choose playback behavior: Enable Loop if the promo should repeat continuously. Leave it off if it should play once. Preview the scene and confirm the video restarts or ends as intended.
  3. Add music separately, if needed: Add the music file as another media source when you want independent level control. Set the music and promo levels in the OBS audio mixer, then listen to the program output. Avoid playing the same music both inside the promo’s audio and through the separate source unless that overlap is deliberate.
  4. Or render a combined file: In a video editor, place the music under the promo, set the balance, and export one video file. Check that its duration and ending match the intended broadcast. Add that exported file to OBS as the media source.
  5. Check the full sequence: Play through a representative section, including movement and audio, and check the opening, transitions and ending. If it loops, test the restart so there is no unintended gap, doubled sound or abrupt cut.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you intend to use.
  2. Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
  3. Use RTMPS for encoder ingestion where available. YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings and accepts AAC or MP3 audio. Its advanced guidance recommends stereo audio at 128 kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate; these are encoder-output recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular source file or mix will sound right.
  4. Start the encoder and check the incoming stream in the Live Control Room preview before going live. Verify that both the picture and the music are present and balanced.

Test, go live and monitor for claims

Do a test with representative picture movement and audio, then inspect the preview and stream health in YouTube Studio. Check the stream on the devices your intended viewers are likely to use. YouTube advises monitoring audiovisual quality and stream health throughout the broadcast.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can lead to a warning, temporary interruption or termination, including when the operator says the music is licensed but the channel has not been allowlisted. If YouTube flags the track, follow the notice and resolve the rights issue. For licensed third-party content that is being flagged, YouTube says: “If you’ve licensed third-party content to use in your stream, ask the owner of the content to add your channel to their allowlist through Content ID.” See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams. Review the archived stream afterward for claims as well.

Common problems and fixes

  • The preview has picture but no music: Check that the music source is enabled, playing and routed to the OBS stream output. Listen to the encoder preview rather than relying only on local playback.
  • The music sounds too loud or is doubled: Lower the music source in the OBS mixer and check whether the promo file already contains the same track. Use only one copy unless the overlap is intentional.
  • The promo stops instead of repeating: Reopen the Media Source settings and enable Loop. Test the file’s end and restart in preview.
  • YouTube warns about copyrighted content: Stop or replace the disputed track unless you have the required rights. If you are licensed, contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting; a license claim alone does not necessarily prevent an interruption.
  • The stream is interrupted despite permission: Check YouTube Studio notices and contact the rights holder to confirm that the correct channel is allowlisted. YouTube’s live scanning can interrupt licensed content when allowlisting is needed.
  • The archived stream has a claim: Review the claim and the music license, including whether it covers the retained replay. Resolve it through the applicable rights-holder or YouTube process.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the finished promo already has its music mixed in, StreamNeo can loop that uploaded video as a YouTube live stream from the cloud. Upload the finished video, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed, so prepare the promo and music together before uploading.
