How to Switch OBS Scenes Between Podcast Episodes on YouTube Live

Build a scene for each podcast segment, switch directly with OBS hotkeys or preview changes in Studio Mode, and check the YouTube preview before going live.

To switch podcast episodes during one YouTube live stream, create a clearly named OBS scene for each show segment, assign scene hotkeys or use Studio Mode to preview and transition, then connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and stream key. Scene switching changes what viewers see without requiring a new live broadcast for each episode.

Plan scenes around the show

An OBS scene is a saved composition of sources: for example, your camera, microphone, episode title, logo, browser overlay, or prerecorded media. Create a separate scene for each meaningfully different layout or segment. A simple sequence might be Starting Soon, Episode 1, Episode 2, Break, and Closing.

Scenes can reuse the same camera and audio arrangement while changing a title or media clip. If only one element changes and the overall layout stays the same, you may instead show or hide that source with a hotkey. Separate scenes are generally easier to operate when the framing or arrangement changes substantially.

Add the sources each segment needs

  1. In OBS, select or create the target scene in the Scenes dock.
  2. In the Sources dock, add the relevant source: Video Capture Device for a webcam or capture device; audio sources for microphones; Image or Text for branding and episode labels; Browser for web-based overlays; or Media Source for prerecorded audio or video.
  3. Arrange and size sources in the preview, then repeat for the other scenes. OBS’s Sources Guide describes the available source categories.

For a local clip, add a Media Source and choose its file. OBS supports common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, MP3, AAC, and WAV. In the Media Source properties, enable Restart playback when source becomes active if the clip should start from the beginning each time you enter that scene. Rehearse the behavior: a clip may continue, restart, or end at a moment that does not fit your transition unless you check it in advance. For a playlist using the VLC Video source, VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Choose how to switch scenes while live

OBS offers two practical approaches. Direct hotkeys switch immediately to a named scene. Studio Mode lets you prepare and inspect the next scene before sending it to the live output.

Method Best for What viewers see
Scene hotkey A rehearsed show where the operator knows the next scene The selected scene appears immediately
Studio Mode Changes that need a visual check before going on air The current live scene remains until you trigger a transition from Preview

Set direct scene hotkeys

  1. Open Settings → Hotkeys in OBS.
  2. Find the actions for switching to specific scenes and assign a distinct shortcut to each target scene.
  3. Choose keys that are memorable and unlikely to be pressed accidentally during the show. OBS does not prescribe a universal podcast key combination, so select and rehearse one that suits your setup.
  4. Test every shortcut before the broadcast, including the sequence of episode changes and the return to your break or closing scene.

OBS documents scene-specific hotkeys in its OBS Studio Overview; an external scene controller is not required for this workflow.

  • Analog mixing and equalization for pure sound
  • Direct mixing of PC/gaming sounds into the streaming output
  • Ultra-low noise analog mixer for streaming, podcasting and recording

Use Studio Mode to preview a change

  1. Enable Studio Mode in OBS.
  2. Select the next scene in Preview. Check the camera framing, episode title, overlays, and any media source before putting it on air.
  3. When it is ready, activate Transition to send the prepared scene to the live output.
  4. Choose a transition such as Cut for an immediate change or Fade for a gradual one. OBS includes Cut and Fade from first launch; other options and duration controls are available in the Scene Transitions panel. Quick Transitions can also be configured with durations in Studio Mode.

Use a transition length that fits the show: a gradual fade may suit a break or title card, while a cut may be clearer when moving directly into a conversation. Test how the transition interacts with audio and clip playback rather than assuming it will behave as intended. For a change to one source rather than a whole scene, OBS’s DVE tutorial covers show/hide transitions and hotkeys for source visibility.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream.
  2. In OBS, configure the stream destination. Select YouTube as the service where available, or use the server/stream URL and stream key provided by YouTube in the corresponding encoder fields.
  3. Keep the stream key private: it functions like a password for your broadcast. If it is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room.
  4. For a scheduled event, start streaming from OBS and wait for the preview to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Check the preview, then select Go live when ready.
  5. To end a scheduled encoder stream, YouTube’s workflow says to select End Stream and stop sending from the encoder. Check the current Live Control Room because button names and behavior can change.

Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and live stream settings guidance for the current workflow.

Preflight the episode changes

  • Switch through every scene while recording locally or on a private or unlisted test stream. Confirm the expected camera, title, overlay, and episode media appear.
  • Watch the OBS audio meters while speaking and check that the intended devices are selected in Settings → Audio if a meter does not respond.
  • Test whether each Media Source starts or restarts as intended when its scene becomes active.
  • Run a short test with the planned show setup before the real broadcast. OBS’s Quick Start Guide says: “We strongly encourage running a test for a few minutes to make sure that there are no issues, rather than just jumping in to your first stream or recording.”
  • Check the YouTube preview before going live. YouTube recommends testing representative audio and motion, verifying the event is accessible, and monitoring audio and video quality during the stream; see its live streaming tips.

Troubleshooting scene switching

The wrong scene appears on air

If using Studio Mode, verify that you selected the intended scene in Preview and then activated Transition. Selecting a scene in Preview alone does not send it to the live output. With direct hotkeys, check the assignment under Settings → Hotkeys and rehearse the scene sequence.

A clip does not start at the beginning

Open that Media Source’s properties and check Restart playback when source becomes active. Test the clip by leaving and re-entering its scene. If you are using the VLC Video source for a playlist, verify VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS (64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC).

YouTube does not show the OBS preview

Check that OBS is configured for the YouTube service or the correct server/stream URL, and that the stream key matches the current event. Keep the key private; reset it in Live Control Room if compromised. Wait for the preview before selecting Go live, and consult YouTube’s current encoder setup page if the interface differs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The microphone or other audio is missing

Speak into the intended microphone and watch the audio meters in OBS. If they do not move, confirm the device selection under Settings → Audio, then test again before going live.
