To take a website screenshot with chromedp on an Indian Linux VPS, you need both a Go program and a compatible Chrome executable on the VM. Install the Go module, make Chrome available (or use the project’s documented chromedp/headless-shell image), then create a browser context, navigate, wait for the page content you need, and capture the viewport, an element, or the full page. Choose an India region based on your audience and operational needs; region availability alone does not establish performance or a suitable VM size.
What you need on the VPS
chromedp is a Go library that controls Chrome through the Chrome DevTools Protocol. Installing the Go package does not install Chrome or prove that the target operating system has the browser’s runtime dependencies. Confirm that a compatible browser executable is present and can run under your VM’s operating system and permissions.
- A Linux VM in an India region suitable for your audience, target-site connectivity, cost, and any location requirements. AWS lists Mumbai and Hyderabad regions, while Google Cloud’s compute pricing material lists Mumbai and Delhi; these listings establish regional options, not measured latency or workload suitability. AWS regions and Availability Zones; Google Cloud Compute Engine pricing.
- Go and the
chromedpmodule. - A compatible Chrome executable, or the documented
chromedp/headless-shellimage. The project describes that image as a simple way to run a chromedp program in a headless environment. chromedp project README. - A page-specific readiness condition and enough process lifetime for navigation and capture to finish.
The evidence available here does not establish a universal Linux package list, Chrome compatibility matrix, minimum CPU or RAM, or a best provider. Follow the browser and operating-system installation instructions for the exact distribution and image you choose, then verify the executable and version on the VM.
Choose a VPS region and plan
Compare the deployment on the factors that affect your own workload rather than choosing by region name alone.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Region and zone: check current India-region availability and select based on your audience, target-site access, and any data-location constraints.
- Compute and concurrency: browser resource use depends on the sites and number of simultaneous captures. No universal sizing figure is established here; measure your workload before setting concurrency.
- Storage and maintenance: account for the browser runtime, images, updates, logs, and any saved captures.
- Transfer and billing: examine the complete monthly cost and region-specific transfer terms. AWS describes Lightsail bundles that combine compute, memory, storage, and transfer; its pricing page says Mumbai plans have half the transfer allowance stated for listed bundles. Terms and prices can change, so verify the live regional offer before provisioning. AWS Lightsail pricing.
- Operations: include access control, backups, monitoring, and the work required to patch the OS and browser.
A displayed AWS Lightsail Linux bundle was listed at $5 USD per month on the provider’s pricing page as accessed in 2026, with the Mumbai transfer qualification above. That volatile listing is an example, not a recommended specification or a benchmark; check current terms directly.
Install chromedp and prepare Chrome

Make a browser executable available
The chromedp project identifies its chromedp/headless-shell image as a straightforward headless-environment path. If you manage Chrome separately, install a browser appropriate for your distribution and configure chromedp to use its executable path when needed. Do not assume a browser binary exists just because the Go program compiles.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Before debugging your capture logic, check the VM itself: confirm the configured executable path, that the binary can be executed by the service account, and that its operating-system runtime requirements are present. Use the installation instructions for your exact OS and browser build; a single distro-independent dependency list is not established here.
Capture a viewport, element, or full page
Choose the capture API by the output you need. The official package documentation distinguishes the current viewport, a selected element, and a full-page image. chromedp package documentation and official examples.

| What to capture | API | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Current browser viewport | chromedp.CaptureScreenshot |
Captures the visible viewport, not necessarily content below it. |
| One DOM element | chromedp.Screenshot or chromedp.ScreenshotScale |
The selector must match an element on the page. |
| Whole page beyond the viewport | chromedp.FullScreenshot |
Captures beyond the viewport. The package documents quality 100 as PNG output and other quality values as JPEG. |
Minimal Go example: full-page screenshot
This example uses the documented chromedp task and screenshot APIs. It expects a compatible Chrome executable to be available to chromedp and writes the returned image bytes to a file. Replace the sample URL and readiness selector with values appropriate to your page.
package main
import (
"context"
"log"
"os"
"time"
"github.com/chromedp/chromedp"
)
func main() {
ctx, cancel := context.WithTimeout(context.Background(), 90*time.Second)
defer cancel()
var image []byte
err := chromedp.Run(ctx,
chromedp.Navigate("https://example.com"),
// Prefer a selector that represents the content you need.
chromedp.WaitVisible("body", chromedp.ByQuery),
chromedp.FullScreenshot(&image, 100),
)
if err != nil {
log.Fatalf("capture failed: %v", err)
}
if err := os.WriteFile("page.png", image, 0644); err != nil {
log.Fatalf("write screenshot: %v", err)
}
}
For an element capture, replace the full-page action with chromedp.Screenshot(selector, &image, chromedp.NodeVisible, chromedp.ByQuery), using a selector that matches the desired node. For the current viewport, use chromedp.CaptureScreenshot(&image). Check the current package documentation for signatures if you are using a different chromedp version.
Navigation completing does not guarantee that a single-page application has finished rendering asynchronous content. Wait for an application-specific selector or other meaningful readiness condition before capturing; there is no universal wait condition for every site.

Headless and allocator options
Chromedp exposes allocator options including Headless, WindowSize, DisableGPU, and NoSandbox. Use them to match your deployment, not as universal troubleshooting switches. Allocator option documentation.
Headless: controls headless browser operation; the project describes Chrome as headless by default.WindowSize: sets viewport dimensions, which affect viewport screenshots and page layout.DisableGPU: is available as an option, but its presence does not establish that disabling GPU is a general fix for launch or rendering problems.NoSandbox: disables Chrome’s sandbox. This changes the browser’s security isolation and should not be copied into production configuration reflexively. Use it only when your deployment model justifies the trade-off and you understand the reduced protection.
Keep the Go, browser, and request lifetimes aligned
Give each capture a bounded context and ensure the Go process remains alive until the browser work and file write complete. The chromedp FAQ explains that browser connection loss can cancel a chromedp context, including when the browser exits or is killed. It also notes that on Linux, child browser processes started by chromedp are force-killed to avoid resource leaks. A short-lived Go process should not be expected to leave its started Chrome child running after it exits. chromedp FAQ.
For a service, define request timeouts, cancellation behavior, browser ownership, and shutdown handling explicitly. If a browser disappears, inspect both the Go error and browser stderr before treating a later context canceled as the root cause.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome fails to start or exits immediately | Configured executable path, file permissions, browser runtime availability, and browser stderr. | Verify the exact binary and its requirements on the target VM; compare with the OS/browser installation instructions. Do not add NoSandbox automatically. |
context canceled or connection lost |
Whether Chrome exited, was killed, or lost its connection; whether the parent context timed out or was canceled. | Check browser stderr and process lifetime, then adjust the request timeout or service shutdown flow if appropriate. The error may reflect browser disconnection rather than a page-level failure. |
| Screenshot is blank or missing expected content | Whether navigation reached the intended page and whether dynamic content had rendered before capture. | Wait for a selector or application-specific readiness condition, then isolate navigation from capture by testing a simple page and the relevant scope separately. |
| Element screenshot fails or captures the wrong area | Whether the selector matches a node and whether that node is visible. | Check the selector against the rendered page and wait for the target element before capture. |
| Full-page output differs from the visible viewport | Whether the requested output is actually viewport capture or full-page capture, and whether page layout changes during rendering. | Choose the corresponding API and wait for page-specific readiness before capture. |
| Intermittent failure under load | Concurrent browser count, memory pressure, process lifetime, and per-request deadlines. | Reduce concurrency while diagnosing and observe resource use on the chosen VM; no general minimum size or throughput figure is established. |
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Browser captures are sensitive to the page being loaded, rendering behavior, VM resources, and concurrency. The available evidence does not establish a reliable screenshot throughput, India latency, or minimum VPS size. Test representative target pages and expected concurrency in the region you intend to use, and track failed navigations, timeouts, resource pressure, and transfer use.
Budget for the full deployment rather than the VM line item alone: browser and OS maintenance, storage, outbound transfer, backups, monitoring, and operational time can matter. Provider region availability and advertised bundles do not guarantee the workload will meet a latency or reliability target.
Or skip the browser setup
If you would rather request a screenshot without maintaining Chrome on a VPS, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A one-call request can return a screenshot or PDF; its clean-shot flow accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Those cleanup steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
For example, save a full-page capture of a target URL with cURL:
