Yes. Chrome Headless can capture a webpage, and a separate scheduler such as cron can launch the capture command or script on a recurring schedule. Chrome takes the screenshot; the scheduler decides when to run it.
Choose the capture method
| Need | Use | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| One URL and a fixed viewport | Chrome’s --headless --screenshot command |
Chrome saves screenshot.png in the current working directory by default. Chrome Headless command-line reference. |
| A maximum wait before capture | Add --timeout=MILLISECONDS |
This bounds Chrome’s wait; it does not prove that a dynamic page has reached the state you need. Chrome Headless command-line reference. |
| Interactions, page-specific readiness logic, or multiple captures | Puppeteer | Puppeteer is a JavaScript browser-automation library with screenshot capabilities. Chrome’s Puppeteer overview. |
| Recurring capture | An external scheduler launches either approach | The schedule is not a Chrome screenshot option. Cron or another job runner starts the command or script at the chosen times. |
For a fixed one-page capture, start with the command line. Use Puppeteer when the workflow depends on browser actions or page-specific logic.

Set up a scheduled command-line capture
- Install Chrome in the environment that will run the job. Verify that its executable launches in Headless mode. Chrome documents Headless for unattended environments without a visible UI. Chrome Headless mode.
- Test a manual capture. Run:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 https://example.com/
This requests a 1280-by-900 viewport. Chrome’s documented default output isscreenshot.pngin the current working directory. The executable name can vary by operating system and installation. - Choose a wait. Add
--timeout=MILLISECONDSif you need to bound the wait before capture. For example,--timeout=10000sets a 10,000-millisecond maximum wait; it does not guarantee that a site’s application data is ready. For that, use a script that waits for a condition meaningful to the page. Chrome’s CLI options. - Schedule the command. Configure cron, a CI scheduler, or another job runner to invoke it at your desired cadence. Set the job’s working directory explicitly or use a deliberate output path. Repeated runs that write the default filename to the same directory can overwrite the previous capture.
- Check the result. After a test run, inspect the image and the process exit status. Configure the job runner to retain logs and report failures; Chrome’s capture command is not, by itself, an end-to-end monitoring or delivery service.
The exact scheduler configuration depends on the operating system and job runner, so there is no single cron line that applies everywhere.

Use Puppeteer when the page needs browser logic
Puppeteer is a better fit when a capture needs clicks, navigation through a workflow, a page-specific readiness check, or processing several pages. Chrome’s overview describes Puppeteer as a browser automation library that can take screenshots. Puppeteer documentation.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
A scheduled Puppeteer job follows the same separation of responsibilities: the scheduler starts the script, and the script launches the browser, performs the capture, and exits. Chrome’s blog has an illustrative cron-triggered example that launches Puppeteer for page processing and closes the browser afterward; it demonstrates the pattern, not a universal current deployment recipe. Chrome’s example.
Define what “ready” means for each page rather than relying on a fixed delay alone. A page may display its initial HTML before the content you want appears. The cited Puppeteer overview establishes automation and screenshots, but it does not prescribe one readiness condition that works for every site.

Plan outputs, reliability, and operating cost
- Keep a history if needed. Give each run a distinct filename or move the resulting image to managed storage. Otherwise, repeated default-name captures in one directory may leave only the newest file.
- Make failures visible. Have the scheduler retain standard output and errors, record the exit status, and alert on failures if the screenshots matter operationally.
- Budget for the runtime. A self-managed setup requires a machine or runner, Chrome, the scheduler, and any storage or alerting you add. The cited Chrome material gives no performance, reliability, or cost guarantees for a particular deployment.
- Test representative pages. Check the viewport, loaded content, and output path with the actual target site before relying on recurring captures. Timeouts can limit waiting but cannot certify the content is correct.
Troubleshooting common problems
- No image appears: check the job’s working directory, Chrome executable path, and process status. Chrome’s default screenshot is saved in the current working directory.
- Every run replaces the last image: use a unique output naming policy or archive each run; the default filename is
screenshot.png. - The capture is blank or incomplete: confirm the viewport and increase or refine the wait. If content appears only after application logic or interaction, use Puppeteer to wait for a relevant page condition.
- The scheduled job works manually but not under cron: check the scheduler’s configured working directory and executable path, and capture its logs. The scheduler runs the process; its environment may differ from an interactive shell.
- The job waits too long: use the CLI timeout to set a maximum wait, or add explicit timeout and error handling in a script. A shorter limit can also cause capture before a slow page is ready.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF; cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, and bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and it reports the page verdict and billing status in response headers.
For a direct API call, replace the URL with the page you want to capture and provide your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Chrome need a visible window to take a scheduled screenshot?
No. Chrome Headless runs without a visible UI and is documented for unattended environments.
Can I capture more than one page in a scheduled run?
Yes. A script using Puppeteer can manage multiple captures; the scheduler can launch that script on a recurring cadence.
