Fixing Wrong Indian-Language Fonts in Chrome Headless Screenshots

When Indian-language text looks wrong in a Chrome Headless screenshot, check script-specific font coverage in the runtime first, then verify web-font loading and browser mode.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install fonts that cover the affected script in the same Linux environment that runs Chrome, then restart Chrome and capture again. If the page uses a web font, verify that it loaded and includes the needed glyphs; if the screenshot still differs from visible Chrome, compare the Chrome version and Headless mode. “Indian languages” do not share one interchangeable script or font, so the exact fix depends on the language, operating system, and container image.

Record the details before changing anything

Capture a baseline and note the affected text and its script—for example, do not assume a remedy for one Indic script covers another. Record these details so the result can be reproduced:

  • The language and script showing missing, substituted, or incorrectly shaped characters.
  • The operating system and exact container or CI image where Chrome runs.
  • The Chrome or Chromium version, capture library, page URL, and viewport.
  • The page’s CSS font stack and whether its intended web font loaded successfully.
  • Whether the same page looks wrong in visible, headful Chrome on the same machine.

There is no authoritative published figure establishing how often this happens or how often a particular fix works. Diagnose the runtime and page rather than treating it as a universal Chrome defect.

1. Check for fonts in the Chrome runtime

A headless browser can render a page while showing fallback characters or missing glyphs if the environment running Chrome lacks a font covering the page’s script. Check the container or CI image itself; fonts installed on a developer’s workstation do not automatically exist inside it. A 2019 Ubuntu support thread reports missing non-Latin characters in Ubuntu Headless and suggests Indic and Noto font packages, but it is a community example, not a current package guide for every distribution or script: Chrome Community discussion.

Identify the Linux distribution and the particular script before choosing an installation command. Package names and available font families vary, so consult the target distribution’s current package repository and verify that the selected font covers the required characters. Do not install CJK fonts as a presumed fix for Indic text; CJK coverage addresses different scripts.

2. Verify the page’s intended font

A CSS font-family declaration is only a request: it does not prove that the font loaded, or that the font contains the glyphs in the affected text. Inspect the element’s computed font family and the browser’s network or font-loading status. If a web font failed to load, correct its URL, delivery, or other loading issue; if it loaded but lacks coverage, use a font with the necessary glyphs or a deliberate fallback.

On Linux, font shaping and fallback involve platform components. Chromium’s RenderText documentation describes Linux shaping with Pango and says fallback selection is mostly delegated to Pango; that document concerns Chrome UI text, so it should not be read as a complete specification of every web-page text-rendering path: Chromium RenderText documentation.

3. Make multilingual rendering deliberate

If a site must look consistent across machines, compare system-installed fonts with bundled or embedded web fonts. Check glyph coverage for each script, successful font loading, visual design and font metrics across target platforms, image size and maintenance, and font licensing or redistribution terms. Embedded fonts can improve uniformity, but they still need appropriate script coverage and must load correctly.

The India Universal Acceptance roadmap recommends UTF-8, language attributes, locale-aware CSS, and embedded fonts for a more uniform display experience. It also notes that a page can display differently across browsers and platforms: India Universal Acceptance roadmap.

4. Check locale only if the symptoms point to it

Locale can matter for language-sensitive behavior, but changing it does not install fonts or supply missing glyphs. Chromium’s Linux debugging guidance says Chromium follows the system locale and that LANGUAGE, LC_ALL, and LC_MESSAGE can override LANG. Check these environment variables when locale-dependent behavior is relevant; do not treat them as a substitute for font coverage: Chromium Linux debugging guide.

5. Compare Headless mode and Chrome version

If headful Chrome renders correctly but a headless capture does not, compare the mode and version while holding the operating system, font environment, URL, and viewport constant. New Headless was made available in Chrome 112 and shares the regular Chrome implementation; old Headless used a separate implementation and could differ in bugs or features. Chromium’s README says old Headless functionality is no longer part of the Chrome binary as of M132 and directs users who still need it to chrome-headless-shell. See the Chrome Headless documentation and Chromium Headless README.

6. Recapture under controlled conditions

  1. Install or configure a font with coverage for the affected script in the exact environment that launches Chrome.
  2. Restart Chrome so the new font environment is available to the browser process.
  3. Confirm the page’s intended web font loads, or that its fallback stack includes a font with the required glyph coverage.
  4. Capture the same URL, viewport, Chrome version, and environment used for the baseline.
  5. If the page needs time to load, use Chrome’s documented --timeout option. The Headless documentation shows this screenshot example: chrome --headless=new --screenshot --window-size=412,892 URL.

Chrome documents Headless command-line screenshots and the timeout option at Chrome Headless. Once a capture is correct, keep the browser version and font environment fixed in CI to make later comparisons meaningful.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Characters appear as empty boxes or are missing only in the container No installed font in that runtime covers the script. Inspect the actual container or CI image; install a suitable font from its current package repository, restart Chrome, and capture again.
The browser uses an unexpected typeface or only some characters look different The requested web font may have failed to load or may lack glyph coverage, leaving fallback to render some text. Inspect computed font-family and font-loading or network status; verify coverage for the affected characters.
The same fallback looks different across machines System font availability and platform fallback can vary. Use an intentionally loaded font with script coverage, or standardize the runtime fonts and browser environment.
Headless and visible Chrome disagree The Chrome version or Headless implementation may differ. Compare the same Chrome version and environment; check whether the workflow relies on old Headless, which is no longer in the Chrome binary from M132.
Changing locale did not fix missing characters Locale settings do not add fonts or glyphs. Return to font availability and web-font loading checks; investigate locale only for language-sensitive behavior.
The screenshot captures before fonts or page content are ready Capture timing may be too early. Use Chrome’s documented Headless --timeout option when the page needs additional time before capture.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. For example, make one GET request with the page URL to save a WebP screenshot:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for setup and options. It accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
