To stop using RCS, turn off RCS chats in Google Messages. If you want to keep RCS when it’s available but use carrier texts when it isn’t, leave RCS on and enable automatic SMS/MMS fallback instead.
Choose whether to disable RCS or use SMS fallback
| Choice | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Turn off RCS chats | Uses SMS or MMS instead of RCS in Google Messages. RCS-only features such as typing indicators and read receipts are unavailable. | You want carrier messaging rather than RCS. |
| Keep RCS on and enable automatic fallback | Uses RCS when available and can resend a message as SMS/MMS when RCS cannot send it. | You want RCS features when possible, with carrier texting as a backup. |
SMS/MMS availability and behavior depend on your device, carrier, and region. Check with your carrier for any plan details or charges. Google’s RCS FAQ

Keep RCS on but allow SMS/MMS fallback
- In Google Messages, tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Messages settings, then RCS chats (or Chat features in some versions).
- Turn on Automatically resend as text (SMS/MMS).
This lets Google Messages try RCS first and use carrier messaging when RCS cannot send. For a specific message that failed over Wi-Fi or mobile data, use Resend messages and choose a resend method. If you choose SMS with a link, the media may be accessible through a public link that Google does not control. Fallback settings in Google’s RCS FAQ · Google’s resend and security guidance

Check whether a message will use RCS, SMS, or MMS
Before sending, check the compose bar: Google Messages shows RCS message for RCS and Text message for carrier SMS/MMS. The send icon also indicates whether the message will go over Wi-Fi or mobile data, or through SMS or MMS. For a conversation to use RCS, everyone in it needs RCS; otherwise, messages can be sent by SMS or MMS. Google’s explanation of message types and indicators
