Choose a disc-drive console if you want to play compatible physical game discs or watch UHD Blu-ray movies. Choose an all-digital console if you are happy to buy and access games digitally and do not need optical media. Before comparing prices, check the exact console model: a product family can include both drive-equipped and digital-only versions.
Should I get a disc or digital console?
Start with the games and movies you already own or expect to use. If any are on disc, verify that the exact console supports that format and title. An all-digital console cannot play disc-based games; Microsoft explicitly says disc-based games are not supported on Xbox Series S.

- Choose a disc-drive model if you need to use compatible physical game discs or UHD Blu-ray movies.
- Choose an all-digital model if buying and accessing games through a digital library or store fits your habits and you do not need disc playback.
Digital-only removes disc swapping, but it also rules out playing your disc-based games on that console. Whether digital purchases are cheaper, or physical games retain resale value, is not established by the manufacturer product information cited here.
Check the exact console configuration
Do not rely on a family name alone. Xbox Series X is offered in drive-equipped and all-digital configurations, while Xbox Series S is all-digital. Sony’s U.S. PS5 purchase page distinguishes a Blu-ray-disc-capable console from Digital Edition options; it also describes a disc drive sold separately for an all-digital version. Check the precise SKU and accessory compatibility before buying an add-on.

Is the disc version worth it?
It is worth considering when disc playback is a requirement, not simply because a drive sounds more flexible. Compare the models on more than optical media: Microsoft positions Series X for native 4K and Series S for disc-free gaming at 1440p with the ability to upscale to 4K. Performance claims depend on supported content and display. Microsoft also lists storage configurations that differ across Series X variants, so compare the full specification and not just drive presence.

Use price as a local, dated comparison
On Microsoft’s U.S. product page captured October 7, 2026, the Xbox Series X 1TB Disc Drive Carbon Black was listed at $799.99, while the 1TB All-Digital Robot White was listed at $749.99. Microsoft notes that prices and availability may vary by retailer. These are page-listed prices for those configurations and that capture date, not a universal or guaranteed price gap. Check current local listings before deciding.
Make the decision in four checks
- Inventory your media: note which games and movies you own or plan to use on disc, and confirm support for the exact console and format.
- Identify the SKU: verify whether the listing includes a drive, is digital-only, or requires a separately purchased compatible drive.
- Compare the whole specification: check resolution positioning, storage, and other configuration differences alongside disc support.
- Check current local availability and price: compare the exact models in your region rather than assuming a price difference from another market or date.
What this comparison does not settle
The cited manufacturer pages establish disc support and selected product specifications; they do not establish long-term ownership costs, store discount patterns, resale value, lending or sharing rules, internet or setup requirements, or future platform support. If any of those factors is decisive, check the current policy for the exact platform and region rather than assuming the drive alone determines it.
