To move a 7 Days to Die dedicated server to the experimental branch, update Steam app 294420 with -beta latest_experimental. To return to the public stable build, run the same SteamCMD update without the -beta option. Back up the world and configuration first, and make sure every player installs the same build as the server.

What “switching branches” changes
A Steam branch is a separate release track for the server files. The public branch is the normal stable release. The latest_experimental branch receives test builds before (or while) they become the public version. Switching the branch changes the executable and supporting files that your dedicated server launches; it does not automatically convert a save into a backup or protect mods from incompatibility.

Valve’s documented pattern is to use app_update 294420 for the stable build and add -beta latest_experimental for the experimental build.
Before you switch: protect the server and check the release state
Back up the world and settings
Stop the server cleanly before changing files. Copy the complete world-save directory, server configuration, and any custom scripts or mod folders to a location outside the server installation. Label the backup with the date, the branch you were running, and the build number if you know it. A branch update can alter files that a rollback will not restore automatically; having a copy lets you return to the previous state instead of relying on an in-place downgrade.

Confirm which branch and build you actually want
Branch names and builds are volatile. The experimental branch name is latest_experimental, not experimental. Community summaries report that version 3.0 shipped through this branch rather than through a separate V3 branch. Do not create a command using a guessed name; an incorrect name can leave you on the existing branch or produce an update error.
As of October 14, 2026, community reports say version 3.3.0 became stable on October 5, 2026, with dedicated-server build 25661908 on the public branch. Those reports have not been independently confirmed against Steam or SteamDB, so verify the branch and current build in Steam or SteamDB immediately before you update. There is no reported 4.0 experimental branch or release date in the available information.

Check whether a beta access code is required
Older community discussions reported that latest_experimental did not require a password. Steam’s Betas tab nevertheless includes a field for private-beta access codes, and some earlier betas were temporarily password-protected. The current requirement is not established. Check the Betas tab for the game or the current SteamDB listing before treating the branch as publicly accessible. If Steam requests a code, do not guess one; the branch owner must provide it.
Switch a Linux server with SteamCMD
1. Stop the running server
Shut down the dedicated server using its normal console command or service manager, then confirm that no server process is still writing to the save. Updating files while the process is running can leave a partially written world or a mixture of old and new binaries.

2. Open SteamCMD and select the install directory
Use the SteamCMD executable installed on the host. The command below illustrates a Linux installation in /home/sdtd/7dtd-server; replace that path with the directory used by your service. The SteamCMD account is the anonymous account used for this dedicated-server download.
3. Install or update the experimental branch
Run this complete command:
steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/sdtd/7dtd-server +login anonymous +app_update 294420 -beta latest_experimental validate +quit
The arguments have distinct jobs:
+force_install_dir /home/sdtd/7dtd-serverchooses where the server files are installed.+login anonymoussigns in using SteamCMD’s anonymous access.+app_update 294420downloads or updates the dedicated server application.-beta latest_experimentalselects the experimental release track.validateasks SteamCMD to check downloaded files and replace files that fail validation.+quitcloses SteamCMD when the update finishes.
Watch the output for a successful update and note any message about authentication, a missing branch, or a required password. Do not start the server until SteamCMD has finished and returned to the shell.

Launch the server with the same service script or start command you used before the update. Check the startup log for the reported game version and build, then connect locally or from a test client. If the server starts but players cannot join, stop troubleshooting the network first: a build mismatch is a more likely cause immediately after a branch change.
Return to the stable public branch
Use SteamCMD without a beta selector
Stop the server, keep the backup you made before the experiment, and run the stable update command:

- Explore - Huge, unique and rich environments, offering the freedom to play the game however you want

steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/sdtd/7dtd-server +login anonymous +app_update 294420 validate +quit
The important difference is that -beta latest_experimental is absent. SteamCMD therefore requests the default public branch for app 294420. Start the server only after the update completes, then confirm the version in the log.
If SteamCMD appears to stay on the old branch
Two community procedures are commonly suggested when the branch does not change: one says to reinstall the server, while another says to delete the installation’s steamapps folder and repeat the update. These recommendations are not backed by an official confirmation and can remove files you still need. Before trying either, stop the service and make a separate copy of the world, configuration, mods, and launch scripts.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm that the command uses the intended install directory.
- Run the update again and read the complete SteamCMD output for an authentication or branch error.
- Compare the build shown by the server log with the build shown in the client.
- If the branch still does not change, move the backup outside the install directory.
- Only then consider a clean reinstall or removal of the installation’s
steamappsfolder, understanding that this is a community workaround rather than an officially documented fix. - Restore configuration and mods selectively after the clean files have been downloaded; do not overwrite the new executable files with an old backup.
Make players switch to the matching client branch
A client on a different build cannot connect to the server. When the server moves to latest_experimental, every player who wants to join must select the corresponding game branch in the Steam desktop client. When you return the server to stable, players must return their clients to the default public branch.
- Open the Steam Library.
- Right-click 7 Days to Die and choose Properties.
- Open the Betas tab.
- Choose the branch that matches the server, such as
latest_experimental, or choose the default/no-beta option for the public build. - Let Steam finish the download before launching the game.
- Check the client’s displayed build and compare it with the server log.
Do not ask players to join while some are still downloading. A server can be healthy and reachable yet reject a player solely because that player is on another build.

Stable versus experimental: the practical difference
| Item | Public stable branch | Experimental branch |
|---|---|---|
| SteamCMD selection | app_update 294420 with no beta selector |
app_update 294420 -beta latest_experimental |
| Purpose | Normal release intended for the public build | Test release track for newer changes |
| Client requirement | Players use the default public build | Players select the same experimental branch |
| Separate V3 branch | Not reported | Community summaries say V3.0 used latest_experimental |
| Current 4.0 branch | Not applicable | No 4.0 experimental branch or release date is reported |
| Mod risk | Usually lower than an in-development build | Mods may break after an update |
| Password status | Not generally relevant to the public branch | Current requirement is unverified; check Steam’s Betas tab and SteamDB |
Mods, saves, and rollback decisions
Expect mods to need attention
Experimental builds can change game files or APIs that mods depend on. A mod that worked on the stable build may prevent startup, produce errors, or alter gameplay after the branch switch. Before updating, record every mod and keep a clean copy of the unmodified server files. If the server fails after the update, test with mods disabled before changing the world save.
Do not confuse a branch switch with a save conversion
The SteamCMD update changes installed application files. It does not promise that a world created on one build will be safe on another, nor does it create a rollback point. Keep the pre-switch world backup until the server has run successfully and all players have confirmed that their characters and structures are intact.
Choose a rollback method
- Use the public branch: run the stable SteamCMD command when the previous release is the current public build.
- Restore files: use the backup if the branch update damaged the installation or a mod combination.
- Restore the world: replace the live save only when testing shows that the save itself was changed or corrupted; preserve the failed copy for diagnosis.
Because branch availability changes over time, Steam may no longer offer an older build through the ordinary public or experimental selectors. Do not promise a rollback to a specific historical build unless Steam currently lists it.

SteamCMD reports that the beta is unavailable
Recheck the spelling: the branch is latest_experimental. Confirm that you are updating app 294420 and that the command points to the intended directory. Then check Steam’s Betas tab and SteamDB for a password requirement or a changed branch status. If the branch has been removed or renamed, no command can download it until the publisher exposes it again.

The command completes, but the server still reports the old build
Verify that the service starts from the same directory passed to +force_install_dir. A common operational mistake is updating one installation while the service launches another. Stop all duplicate server processes, update the directory actually used by the service, and read the version from that process’s log.
Players receive a version or build mismatch
Compare the server’s build with each player’s client build. Have affected players finish the branch download, restart Steam if necessary, and launch only after the update completes. Everyone must be on the same release track; network port changes will not fix a version mismatch.

Return to a clean test by disabling third-party mods and starting the server with the updated files. If the clean server works, reintroduce mods one at a time using versions that support the selected branch. Keep the experimental server separate from a stable production installation when possible so a test update cannot overwrite the live files.
SteamCMD asks for credentials or a code
Read the exact prompt. Anonymous access is used in the standard dedicated-server command, but a private beta can require an access code. Check the current Betas tab information rather than entering a random password. A failed login or authorization step means the update has not proved that it selected the intended branch.
A low-risk operating plan for a live community server
- Announce a maintenance window and identify whether the goal is testing or production play.
- Stop the server cleanly and create dated backups of saves, configuration, scripts, and mods.
- Record the current build and the branch selected by the server.
- Install the experimental files in a separate directory when you need to test without interrupting the stable server.
- Run the SteamCMD command for the desired branch and save its output.
- Start the test instance without mods, verify its build, and connect with one matching client.
- Test mods individually, then invite the rest of the group only after the base server is stable.
- Keep the stable backup until the experimental session has completed successfully.
A separate installation is especially useful because the available guidance does not establish a guaranteed in-place downgrade procedure. It lets you compare branches without deleting the files that your stable server needs.
Quick command reference
| Goal | SteamCMD command |
|---|---|
| Install or update the public stable branch | steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/sdtd/7dtd-server +login anonymous +app_update 294420 validate +quit |
| Install or update the latest experimental branch | steamcmd +force_install_dir /home/sdtd/7dtd-server +login anonymous +app_update 294420 -beta latest_experimental validate +quit |
Replace /home/sdtd/7dtd-server with your actual server directory. The path is an example, not a requirement imposed by Steam.
Final verification checklist
- The server is stopped before files are updated.
- The world, configuration, scripts, and mods have dated backups.
- App ID
294420is used. - The experimental selector is spelled
latest_experimental. - The stable command omits the
-betaoption. - The server log shows the intended build after startup.
- Every player has selected the matching Steam branch and completed its download.
- Mods have been tested against the selected build.
- Any beta password requirement has been checked in the current Steam Betas information.
Bottom line
Switching a dedicated 7 Days to Die server is a SteamCMD branch selection, not a special server configuration setting: add -beta latest_experimental to app 294420 for the experimental build, or remove it for stable. Treat the operation as a version migration—back up first, verify the current branch and build, coordinate the matching client branch, and expect experimental updates to require mod testing.
