Most Vault Hunters SkyVault server failures come from four things: the wrong Java/runtime baseline, incomplete or mismatched Forge files, incorrect SkyVault world-generation settings, or a world created before those settings were corrected. Identify the stage of failure first, preserve the logs and world, then apply the smallest reversible fix.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
Confirm the supported baseline before changing anything
Vault Hunters 3rd Edition guidance targets Minecraft 1.18.2 and Java 17. The official installation guide recommends about 8 GB of RAM and approximately 3 GB of free disk space. Use a 64-bit Java 17 runtime for the server process, not merely a Java 17 installation somewhere else on the computer.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Component | Baseline | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft | 1.18.2 | The modpack and Forge files are built for this game version. |
| Java | Java 17, 64-bit | An older Java release or a 32-bit runtime can stop Forge before the server finishes loading. |
| Memory | About 8 GB recommended | Startup and SkyVault world generation can exceed a small allocation; the operating system also needs free memory. |
| Disk | Approximately 3 GB free | The server needs room for the pack, libraries, logs, region files, backups and temporary generation data. |
| Pack files | Identical Vault Hunters release and compatible mod files on client and server | A client that loads a different release can disconnect during login even when the server itself starts. |
Check the Java executable that the startup script actually calls with java -version. Confirm that it reports version 17 and a 64-bit architecture. If the output is correct in a terminal but the server launcher uses another Java path, change the launcher or script to point to the Java 17 executable and test again.
Classify the error by when it occurs
The timing of the failure narrows the search more reliably than the visible exception name. Stop making changes until you can place the problem in one of these stages.
#1 Best Overall
| Failure stage | Typical symptom | Most likely areas | First check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before “Done” or full server load | The process exits while Forge or mods are loading. | Java version or architecture, missing dependencies, corrupt downloads, insufficient memory, or an incompatible mod. | Java output, allocated RAM, the complete latest.log, and the server’s Forge/mod files. |
| World creation or first startup with a new save | The server crashes while creating terrain or hangs during generation. | SkyVault level type, Terralith, the support mod, a bad world generated with old settings, or memory pressure. | server.properties, the world folder, generation-related lines in the log, and the pack version. |
| When a player joins | The server starts, but joining causes a crash or immediate kick. | Client/server mod mismatch, incompatible pack release, or a world or entity that triggers a mod fault. | Both client and server logs, the exact join time, and the versions shown by each installation. |
| After joining, during an action | A particular bounty, command, or gameplay action crashes the process. | A reproducible mod or gameplay-state defect rather than startup configuration. | Record the exact action and avoid repeating it until you have a backup and a reportable reproduction. |
| Connection never reaches login | Friends time out or receive a network refusal while the server remains running. | Address, firewall, router or hosting configuration, or a client using the wrong pack. | Determine whether the server console records an attempted connection; no server-side entry points to a network path problem. |
Collect evidence before changing variables
A crash log is useful only when it can be tied to a specific event and installation. Save a copy of the following before deleting files, reinstalling the pack or regenerating a world:
- The complete
latest.logfrom the server. - Any crash-report file created for that run.
- The server-console output, including the final lines before exit.
- The output of
java -version, the Java path used by the script, and whether the runtime is 64-bit. - The memory flags or control-panel allocation and the amount of free system memory.
- The exact Vault Hunters/SkyVault release, Minecraft version and Forge version.
- The action that triggered the failure: startup, new-world creation, a particular player joining, a bounty, or a command.
- A backup of the world and
server.propertiesbefore making generation changes.
When reporting an unresolved issue, Sky Vaults Support asks for the triggering events, mod version and console or in-game error. The official Vault Hunters site directs bug reports to the Official Vault Hunters Discord by typing /bug-report in any channel. Include the evidence bundle instead of posting only a screenshot of the last exception line.
Fix Java, RAM and disk problems
Select 64-bit Java 17
- Stop the server completely; do not replace Java while the process is still running.
- Run
java -versionfrom the same account and launcher that starts the server. - If the version is not 17, install or select a 64-bit Java 17 runtime and update the startup script or hosting panel’s Java selector.
- Start the server again and keep the new console output. A change in the first few lines confirms which executable is being used.
Do not treat a Java error as proof that the pack is broken. If Java 17 is already confirmed, move to dependencies, files and world settings rather than repeatedly reinstalling Java.
Give the process enough memory
The official recommendation is about 8 GB of RAM for the server. Allocate at least that recommendation when the machine can spare it, close competing applications, and verify that the operating system has additional free memory. An out-of-memory message during startup or generation supports a memory fix; a missing-mod or invalid-configuration exception will not be cured by adding RAM.
Check the allocation in the server script or hosting panel rather than assuming the computer’s total RAM is available to Minecraft. Leave room for the operating system and, if the same computer runs a client, for that client as well. If the process is killed without a Java out-of-memory message, inspect operating-system memory pressure and the console for an external termination.
Check free disk space
Keep approximately 3 GB free before installing or regenerating. World generation, backups and logs can require more than the initial download. If the disk fills while regions are being written, restore the last intact backup, free space, and repeat the operation only after confirming the world folder is complete.

Forge often reports a dependency problem near the end of a long log. Read upward to the first “caused by” or missing-mod line; later shutdown exceptions are frequently consequences rather than the root cause.
- Stop the server and copy the current installation and world to a backup location.
- Compare the server’s Vault Hunters release, Minecraft version and Forge version with the release selected by every player.
- Obtain a fresh copy of the official server files for that release. Re-download when an archive was interrupted or extracted with errors.
- Verify that every required mod and dependency from the server distribution is present. Do not silently omit a file because the server appears to launch without it.
- Start from those server files rather than copying a player’s entire client
modsfolder into the server. Client-only additions can create a different, unsupported dependency set. - Test the clean installation with the same Java and memory settings, then add only documented configuration changes.
Keep the old installation until the clean copy has loaded a world and accepted a test connection. That makes the operation reversible and preserves evidence if the replacement fails for a different reason.

Correct SkyVault world-generation settings
SkyVault generation is not enabled merely by installing the pack. Sky Vaults Support’s Vault Hunters S3 procedure calls for removing Terralith, adding the compatible Sky Vaults support mod, changing the level type, and regenerating the world.
Apply the documented S3 configuration
- Stop the server and make a complete backup of the world folder,
server.propertiesand the server files. - Use the server release that matches the clients. Do not apply an S3 procedure to a different Vault Hunters edition without checking that edition’s documentation.
- Remove Terralith from the server’s mod set as instructed by Sky Vaults Support.
- Add the Sky Vaults support mod specified for the installed release. Use the support project’s matching file; do not substitute a similarly named mod.
- Open
server.propertiesand changelevel-type=defaulttolevel-type=the_vault:sky_vaults. - Save the file, then remove or rename the existing world instance so the server cannot continue loading terrain created with the old generator.
- Start the server and allow a new world to generate. Watch the console for generation errors before inviting players.
Changing level-type after terrain already exists does not convert that terrain. Regeneration is destructive to the selected world folder, which is why the backup step is mandatory. If the new world loads correctly, keep the old folder as an archive until the new save has been tested.

If startup fails after changing the generator
Recheck the exact mod and pack versions first. A wrong support-mod build can look like a Java or memory failure because the process exits during mod initialization. If the log identifies a missing dependency, restore the official server files and apply the documented SkyVault changes one at a time. If the old world was accidentally left in place, stop the server and verify that the configured world name points to the newly generated save.
Handle terrain generating outside the island
A documented SkyVaults server issue can generate ordinary overworld terrain outside the initial island area. The known-issues compilation lists pre-generating a large region as a workaround. Its example command is:

The example targets a 100-by-100-chunk area around the origin, approximately 1,600 by 1,600 blocks. Treat the command as version-sensitive: confirm the syntax and permission requirements against the exact installed pack before running it. Pre-generation can consume substantial CPU, memory and disk space, so run it while no players are connected and monitor the console and free disk.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Back up the world.
- Confirm that the server has the correct SkyVault level type and support mod.
- Check the command syntax for your release and ensure you have the required administrative permission.
- Run the pre-generation command from the server console or an authorized in-game session.
- Wait for completion, watch for errors, and check that the generated region files remain on disk after a clean shutdown.
Pre-generation is a mitigation for spillover; it does not repair a world made with the wrong generator. If the world was created before the SkyVault settings were corrected, regenerate it from a verified backup instead.

First determine whether the connection reaches the server. If the console shows no attempted login, investigate the address, firewall, router or hosting path. If the server records a login followed by a kick or crash, compare the client and server installations.
- Confirm that every player uses the same Vault Hunters release, Minecraft 1.18.2 baseline and compatible mod files as the server.
- Have the affected player provide the client log from the same attempt; the server log alone may omit the packet or mod that caused the disconnect.
- Record whether the failure affects one player or everyone. One-player failures usually justify checking that player’s files first; an all-player failure points to the server or world.
- Test with a newly created player position or a backup world only after preserving the original save. A crash tied to one location or entity is different from a pack-wide login failure.
Do not replace the server’s mods with an arbitrary client folder to make versions “match.” Rebuild both sides from the same release distribution and remove only documented client-only additions.

Recognize gameplay-state crashes and admin commands
Completion-type bounty crashes
The known-issues compilation records an occasional crash associated with completion-type bounties. Until the issue is resolved for your release, avoid interacting with the affected bounty type, keep a recent backup, and record a reproducible sequence if it occurs. Include the bounty type, player, world, time and the complete logs in a bug report.
Repair-state command
The official admin reference lists /the_vault gear_debug repairs fix to decrease used repair slots. This command addresses a repair-state problem; it is not a remedy for a server that crashes during startup or world generation. Use it only when the repair-state symptom is present and you have the required administrative permission.
Choose the least disruptive fix path
| Situation | Change scope | Reversible? | Operational burden |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wrong Java, low RAM or low disk | Runtime or machine resources | Usually yes; restore the previous launcher setting if needed. | Low to moderate. |
| Missing or corrupt files | Reinstall the matching server distribution | Yes, if the old directory and world are backed up. | Moderate. |
| Wrong SkyVault generator | Remove/add mods, edit server.properties, regenerate the world |
Only with a verified backup; deleting the only world is irreversible. | High. |
| Terrain spillover | Pre-generate a large region | Not a simple rollback; restore the world if generation causes damage. | High CPU, memory and disk use. |
| One gameplay action crashes | Avoid the trigger and report the defect | Yes, provided the action is not repeated on the only save. | Low, but requires good reproduction evidence. |
| Friends cannot reach the server | Network or host configuration, then pack verification | Usually yes. | Varies with local networking or provider controls. |
When managed hosting is the better option
A managed Minecraft host can reduce local work such as Java process selection, routine backups and network exposure, but it does not make an incompatible modpack or incorrect SkyVault world type compatible. Before moving a save, verify the provider’s exact Vault Hunters/SkyVault support, Minecraft and Forge versions, geographic region, pricing, backup policy and uptime terms. Export a local copy of the world and configuration first; a provider migration should never be the only backup.
Quick Recap
Final pre-launch checklist
- Minecraft and Vault Hunters releases are identical across server and clients.
- The server runs 64-bit Java 17.
- About 8 GB of RAM is available to the server, with additional system memory free.
- Approximately 3 GB or more of disk space remains before generation.
- The server was rebuilt from the matching official files, not an arbitrary client
modsfolder. - For S3 SkyVault generation, Terralith was removed, the matching support mod was added, and
level-type=the_vault:sky_vaultsis saved. - The old world was backed up before deletion or regeneration.
- Pre-generation syntax was checked for the installed version before use.
latest.log, crash reports, console output and reproduction steps are preserved.- Known completion-bounty triggers are avoided until the issue is reported or fixed.
