How to Switch Between Opera Developer and Stable Without Losing Bookmarks or Settings

Export Opera Developer bookmarks to HTML, import them in stable, handle passwords separately, and keep the source profile until the transfer is checked.

Export your bookmarks to an HTML file before switching, then import that file into the other Opera channel. Treat passwords separately, and check settings in the destination rather than assuming a full profile transfer is supported. Keep the original installation and profile until you have verified the move.

Which transfer method should you use?

Method What it covers Is Developer-to-stable compatibility guaranteed? How to verify or reverse it
Bookmark HTML export and import Bookmarks, including folders and Speed Dial entries; it does not export passwords or all settings. Opera documents the process in its bookmark help. No channel-specific guarantee is stated. The portable export/import steps are documented. Inspect folders and Speed Dial in the destination; retain the source profile and HTML file until satisfied.
Opera Sync Selected categories, including bookmarks, tabs, Speed Dial, settings, history and passwords, according to Opera’s Sync overview and account FAQ. The reviewed documentation does not expressly guarantee synchronization between Developer and stable in every configuration. Choose categories in Advanced sync settings and check what appears in each installation. Keep an independent backup.
Password CSV export and import Passwords, using a separate process described in Opera’s FAQ. No channel-specific guarantee is stated. Confirm the imported entries in Password Manager, then securely remove the temporary CSV copy.
Copying profile files Potentially selected browser data, depending on files and profiles; this is not a documented complete channel migration. No. A community forum post discusses moving bookmarks to another computer, not proving Developer-to-stable compatibility: Opera forum guidance. It is harder to verify and undo safely. Avoid unless you understand the profile files and have a complete backup.

Before you switch, identify the source installation

Use opera:about/ or open the menu’s Update & Recovery page to check the installed version. Opera documents these ways to identify it in its FAQ. The page may also show a profile path. Use the path shown on your own computer: it can vary by operating system and installation, so a path found in an online guide is not universal.

Do not uninstall the source or overwrite its profile as a first step. Make sure you know where your bookmark export will be saved, and keep an extra copy somewhere separate if the bookmarks are important.

Export bookmarks from Opera Developer

  1. Open the bookmarks manager in the source browser.
  2. Use the import/export control at the bottom of the left panel and choose the export option.
  3. Save the resulting HTML file to a location you can find again. Opera documents bookmark export as an HTML text file in its Features help.
  4. Keep the file until the destination has been checked. It can be stored offline, for example on a USB drive, but removable storage is optional.

This export is for bookmarks. It is not a backup of passwords, extensions, or every browser preference.

Import bookmarks into Opera stable

  1. Install or open the stable channel without deleting the Developer profile.
  2. In the destination, open Settings and find Synchronization, then choose Import bookmarks and settings; alternatively, use the bookmark manager’s import/export control.
  3. Select the saved HTML file and complete the import.
  4. Check the bookmark folders and Speed Dial entries in stable. Open a few representative bookmarks to confirm they work.

Opera’s Customization help describes the import flow. If the destination does not show the expected entries, keep the original browser and export file intact while you check that you imported the right file and channel.

Use Opera Sync as an additional route, not your only backup

Sign in to the same Opera account in both installations, then inspect Advanced sync settings and select the categories you want. Opera lists bookmarks, tabs, Speed Dial, settings, history and passwords among desktop sync categories; synced data is merged to the account across signed-in browsers. The documentation explains syncing across browsers and devices, but does not specifically promise that Developer and stable will synchronize with each other in every configuration.

Check that the selected data appears in the destination before relying on it. Keep the bookmark HTML export and source profile until you have verified the result; Sync should not be treated as the sole backup for this switch.

Transfer passwords separately

Opera’s FAQ documents exporting passwords to a CSV file from Password Manager settings and importing that file in the receiving browser. This is separate from bookmark HTML export. A CSV contains credentials, so store it securely during transfer, confirm the entries in the destination’s password manager, and remove the temporary file once import is confirmed.

Check settings and finish only after verification

Review the preferences that matter to you in the destination: appearance, privacy, startup behavior, sidebar, extensions and other personal settings. Sync can include settings, but Opera’s documentation does not establish a complete Developer-to-stable settings transfer or provide a guarantee that every preference will carry over. Recreate missing preferences manually.

  • Confirm representative bookmarks, folders and Speed Dial entries.
  • Check password entries in Password Manager rather than relying on the bookmark import.
  • Review important preferences and extensions in the destination.
  • Keep the source profile until these checks are complete; only then decide whether to remove it.

Opera forum users have discussed copying bookmark-related profile files when moving to a new computer, but that community advice is not an official guarantee for switching channels. Direct profile copying can involve channel or version differences, so do not overwrite a profile casually. If you choose to investigate that fallback, close Opera first and preserve a complete backup; prefer the documented export/import route for bookmarks.
