To change what your laptop’s top-row keys do when pressed alone, first check for an Fn Lock or FnLk marking and consult the instructions for your exact model. On some laptops, Fn + Esc toggles between standard F1–F12 keys and the printed media or action controls; it is not a universal shortcut. If your model has no supported keyboard toggle, look for a related BIOS/UEFI setting or manufacturer utility.
What changes when you switch the function-key mode?
The top row may serve two purposes: standard F1–F12 functions and secondary actions printed on the keys, such as volume, brightness, or media playback. The selected mode determines which action happens when you press a key by itself. On models whose documentation confirms it, holding Fn accesses the alternate action.

For example, HP describes its Action Keys Mode setting this way: when enabled, the printed actions work without pressing Fn; when disabled, Fn is required for those actions and the standard function-key behavior is direct. That description applies to supported HP notebook PCs, not every laptop. HP’s Action Keys Mode instructions explain the model-specific setting.

Try the options in this order
- Inspect the keyboard. Look for Fn Lock, FnLk, a lock symbol on Esc, or an indicator light. Note the icons printed on the function row; the icons and default behavior vary by model.
- Check the manual for your exact model and try its documented toggle. Fn + Esc is used on some supported Lenovo, ASUS, and Dell models, but the shortcut is not universal.
- If no toggle applies, check BIOS/UEFI. Look for a setting called Action Keys Mode, Function Key Behavior, or Fn Lock Options. Follow the model’s instructions to enter setup and save the change.
- Check the manufacturer’s keyboard utility. Some supported ASUS systems offer a Hotkeys/F1–F12 choice in ASUS Keyboard Hotkeys or MyASUS.
- Test both behaviors. Press a top-row key by itself, then press it while holding Fn. Compare the results with the mode you selected.
How the setting differs by manufacturer
HP: Action Keys Mode in BIOS
HP’s documented setting is called Action Keys Mode. Enabled makes the printed actions work without Fn; Disabled makes the standard function-key behavior the direct action. HP’s instructions apply to supported notebook PCs, and the BIOS entry method and available options depend on the model. Follow HP’s instructions for Action Keys Mode rather than assuming the same menu exists on another brand.

Lenovo: Fn Lock on the documented Legion 5i
The Legion 5i guide says Fn + Esc turns Fn Lock on or off. With Fn Lock off, the key’s primary function is the direct action; with it on, the secondary function is direct. This is the behavior documented for that guide, not a guarantee for every Lenovo keyboard.
ASUS: shortcut or utility on supported systems
ASUS documents Fn + Esc for enabling or disabling the function-keys feature on supported models, while explicitly noting that the shortcut is not supported on all models. Depending on the notebook and software version, a Hotkeys/F1–F12 choice may instead be available through ASUS Keyboard Hotkeys or MyASUS. See ASUS’s keyboard overview and ASUS’s supported switching options for the documented alternatives.

Dell’s Inspiron 5590 documentation describes Fn + Esc for toggling multimedia functionality and identifies Function Key Behavior in BIOS setup. Dell’s broader keyboard guide also documents Fn Lock Options and a Windows Mobility Center option that may be absent depending on the Windows version. These are model- and system-dependent routes, not a single Windows-wide setting.

If the shortcut or setting does not work
- Verify the exact model. A shortcut documented for one laptop may not be supported on another, even within the same brand.
- Check the key’s markings and indicator. Fn Lock lights or symbols can help identify whether the mode changed, but confirm by testing the keys.
- Use the documented firmware path. BIOS entry keys and menu names differ. Dell’s cited guide and HP’s cited instructions use different startup keys, so do not assume one key works across laptops.
- Check software availability. A manufacturer utility may only be offered for certain models or software versions; if the option is missing, use the model’s manual to identify another supported method.
