Look at the icons on your laptop’s top-row keys: they show the laptop-specific actions those keys may perform, such as changing brightness or volume. If pressing a key by itself triggers one of those actions but you need its standard F1–F12 command, hold Fn while pressing it. To make standard function keys the default, use Fn Lock or an operating-system setting if your device supports one; the exact control varies by laptop, keyboard layout, and operating system.
What the F1–F12 keys do on a laptop
F1–F12 are standard function keys used by applications and operating systems. On a laptop, the same physical keys may also have a secondary action printed as an icon, such as adjusting volume or brightness, switching displays, or controlling the touchpad. Which action happens when you press a key alone depends on the laptop’s configuration.

There is no universal chart that maps each F-key to the same laptop feature. For the exact assignments, check the icons on your keyboard and the manual for your specific laptop model. For example, the Lenovo S540-15IML manual lists its own hotkey assignments; Samsung and ASUS document notebook-specific behavior too. These examples should not be treated as a universal mapping, even across one manufacturer’s products.

Use a standard F-key command
- Check the keycap. Find the F-number and any icon printed on the key. The icon indicates a possible laptop-specific action; consult your exact model’s manual to confirm what it does.
- Press the key by itself. Note whether it sends a standard F-key command or performs the icon action.
- If it performs the icon action, hold Fn and press the key. On many laptops, Fn accesses the alternate action. Depending on the laptop’s current mode, this may give you the standard F-key command.
- Check the result in the app you are using. Some applications respond to F-keys differently, so confirm that the intended command occurred.
Microsoft’s guidance explains the distinction for its keyboard arrangements: “When the F Lock light is On, standard functions work (F1, F2, and so on).” That describes Microsoft’s F Lock guidance, not a universal Fn Lock shortcut for laptops. Make standard function keys the default
If you regularly need F1–F12, changing the default can avoid holding Fn each time. The available method depends on the keyboard and operating system:

- Windows laptops and other PCs: Look for an Fn Lock label, indicator, or setting in the documentation for your exact laptop model. The toggle is not the same on every device. Microsoft’s F Lock instructions concern its keyboard guidance; do not assume they describe your laptop’s shortcut.
- Mac: macOS includes a setting for using F1, F2, and the other function keys as standard keys. Apple’s instructions vary by macOS version and explain how Fn or Globe accesses the alternate action. Follow Apple’s instructions for using function keys on a Mac for the version you use.
- Chromebook: The top row is Chromebook-specific on many layouts, and available function-key options depend on the keyboard. Use Google’s Chromebook keyboard-shortcut guidance rather than assuming the row matches a Windows laptop’s layout.
If Fn and the top-row keys do not behave as expected
- The wrong action happens: Try the key once alone and once with Fn held. This helps establish which action is currently the default.
- You cannot find an Fn Lock control: Check the key labels and the manual for the exact model. Do not rely on a shortcut listed for a different laptop.
- The icon’s meaning is unclear: Use the model manual; similar-looking keyboards can assign different actions to the same position.
- You need exact toggle instructions: Identify the laptop’s make and model, operating system, and keyboard layout. Without those details, a universal key combination cannot be stated reliably.
