You can keep the same YouTube channel when moving a 24/7 loop off a VPS. The change is where the video is sent from: the replacement encoder or service connects to YouTube Live with the channel’s server URL and stream key. Create a test broadcast, verify the new feed in YouTube Studio, and keep the VPS available until the replacement is confirmed.
What changes—and what stays the same?
Your YouTube channel remains the destination. You are replacing the VPS process that sends audio and video to YouTube Live, not moving the channel or its audience. YouTube accepts streams from software and hardware encoders; its setup instructions direct you to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in the encoder (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).

A scheduled broadcast and the incoming stream are related but separate: the broadcast is the YouTube event, while the stream is the audio/video transmission connected to it. Google documents them as separate resources in its YouTube Live Streaming API. A replacement service may send the feed without creating or scheduling the YouTube event, so check which part of the workflow it handles.

How do I move my livestream from a VPS to a streaming service?
- Check the channel and plan a test. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and confirm live streaming is enabled. Choose whether to create an immediate test or schedule a broadcast. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help; that is a first-time enablement caveat, not a general waiting period for an established channel changing encoders.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In the Live Control Room, create the event or reuse previous settings if appropriate. Review title, visibility, and other event-specific details before using it for the production loop. Scheduling can provide a watch page and reminders.
- Copy the YouTube ingestion details. In the event’s stream settings, copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the replacement encoder or service’s corresponding fields. Treat the key like a password: enter it only in the destination’s secure credential controls. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Choose RTMPS if the service supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data into and through Google’s servers. Confirm the chosen service supports the protocol and your intended resolution and bitrate in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Start the replacement feed without retiring the VPS. Start the encoder or service and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check that the expected picture and audio are present and that the stream status looks healthy. Start the scheduled broadcast when appropriate. Keep the old process available during this test; this reduces migration risk but cannot guarantee a seamless handover.
- Validate the public result. Open the watch page and confirm the stream plays as intended. Check the schedule and any recording or archive you require. YouTube’s encoder help page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a 24/7 broadcast will be saved as one complete archive. Arrange an independent recording or a separate archive workflow if you need a full-length copy.
- Retire the VPS after validation. Once the replacement has operated as intended and you have checked playback and any required archive, stop the VPS loop and decommission or cancel the host if it is no longer needed.
How should I compare a VPS, a managed service, and an encoder?
The practical difference is who operates the sending process. On a VPS, you administer the host and loop software. A managed service operates its own sending workflow, but its exact responsibilities vary: verify whether it handles scheduling, recovery, alerts, logs, and independent recording. A hardware encoder is a dedicated device rather than a rented server; YouTube supports hardware encoders but does not require one.

These choices are not interchangeable in every setup. A VPS may suit someone who wants direct control over the host and can maintain it. A service may reduce server administration, but only if its verified workflow covers your source and recovery needs. A hardware encoder may be appropriate when its inputs and unattended operation match the loop. YouTube’s encoder instructions recognize both software and hardware; they do not establish the reliability or features of a particular third-party provider.
Can I keep the same stream key?
The channel can stay the same, and YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key. You can enter the channel’s existing ingestion details in the new encoder if they remain valid and are available in Studio. Keep the key private. If it has been exposed or you want to revoke the old sender’s access, rotate it in YouTube Studio and enter the replacement key in the new service before starting the feed.

Should I use RTMPS?
Use RTMPS when the replacement supports it and its settings meet your requirements. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingestion because it encrypts data into and through Google’s servers. Confirm the exact server URL, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe settings supported by both YouTube and the selected encoder using YouTube’s live encoder settings. A service-specific interface may label these fields differently.

What should I plan for with a 24/7 stream?
- Recovery: Know how the sending process restarts after a failure, what alerts you receive, and who can act on them. Do not infer a service’s recovery behavior from the fact that it is managed; verify it with the provider.
- Long-running archives: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24/7 stream exceeds that stated window, so plan separately for recordings or archives you need.
- Content rights and platform rules: Live content remains subject to YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Confirm you have the necessary rights to music, video, and other material in the loop; a change of encoder does not change those obligations (YouTube Community Guidelines and YouTube Terms of Service).
- Cost and portability: Compare recurring service fees with VPS hosting, bandwidth, storage, and any hardware purchase. Check how easily you can export or reuse your source playlist and recordings if you later change providers. Costs and migration terms depend on the provider and setup.
