A VPS reboot stops the encoder process that sends video to YouTube. On a Linux VPS, configure the actual encoder—such as FFmpeg—to start under a boot-enabled service manager such as systemd, then verify that it can read its media and configuration, connect to YouTube, and produce a healthy feed. YouTube’s auto-start setting does not launch a stopped process on your server.
Why the stream goes offline after a VPS reboot
YouTube receives a live feed from an encoder running on your VPS. When the operating system reboots, that encoder process stops. Unless a service supervisor starts it again after boot, YouTube receives no new video. YouTube describes the encoder as the program or tool that captures and compresses the stream; starting that program is a separate task from configuring the YouTube broadcast.

As YouTube Help puts it, “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” The YouTube setting called auto-start concerns starting a broadcast from the encoder; it does not make a halted VPS process run again.
Fix the VPS startup path
1. Identify the encoder and how it runs
Find out whether the VPS uses FFmpeg, OBS in a desktop session, or another encoder. Configure startup for that specific program and its actual command, user, files, and working paths. A systemd unit intended for FFmpeg will not start an OBS session, for example.

2. Configure a boot-enabled service
For a Linux software pipeline, run the encoder under a service manager such as systemd and enable that service to start at boot. A public FFmpeg project documents one systemd implementation pattern, including a no-output progress timeout that can trigger a restart. It is an example, not an official YouTube requirement or a guarantee that every type of stream failure will be detected. Use the service manager and encoder documentation for your distribution and software version when creating or changing the unit.
After enabling the service, check its status and logs following a reboot. Confirm that the service starts the intended command rather than merely reporting that a unit is active. A process can be running while failing to send useful media.

3. Check access to media and configuration
Confirm that the service’s operating-system user can read the input video and any configuration files. Check that paths exist after boot and that the service starts from an appropriate working directory. A service that cannot access its source cannot provide a feed, even if systemd reports that the process launched.
4. Verify YouTube destination details
Check that the encoder has the correct YouTube Live server URL and current stream key. YouTube says stream keys are like a stream’s “password and address,” so keep the key private. If YouTube Studio issues a replacement key or the encoder reports a key error, update the encoder’s stored key before restarting the service. YouTube’s guidance explains that custom keys can be reused; do not assume a reset key remains valid in a previously configured encoder.

5. Enable and validate restart behavior
Set the service to start at boot and choose a restart policy appropriate to the encoder. Restart-on-exit can help when the process crashes, but it does not necessarily detect a process that remains alive while no longer making progress. A watchdog or output-progress timeout can address that kind of stall if supported and configured for the actual pipeline. The FFmpeg project example illustrates this distinction; its timeout is not a universal setting.
Test the complete recovery after reboot
- Before reboot: note the encoder service name, inspect its status and recent logs, and confirm the source file, configuration, YouTube URL, and stream key are available to its service user.
- Reboot the VPS: use the host’s normal reboot procedure and allow the operating system to return fully.
- Check the service: inspect systemd status and logs to confirm the encoder started and did not exit with a permissions, missing-file, or configuration error.
- Check the outgoing feed: review encoder output and errors, confirm the source is available, and check CPU load where relevant and outbound connectivity.
- Check YouTube Studio: open the Live Control Room and confirm a preview appears and the feed is healthy before treating the fix as successful.
YouTube recommends checking the encoder’s output and dashboard errors, source quality, and the live preview when troubleshooting. A successful service start alone is not proof that viewers are receiving video.

Understand the two recovery layers

YouTube documents its encoder settings and auto-start/auto-stop controls, but does not promise that a particular VPS service will reconnect automatically after every failure. A process supervisor and a successful ingest are related but separate checks.
Account for YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle
Restarting an encoder process and continuing the same YouTube broadcast are not interchangeable outcomes. Depending on the stream configuration and YouTube’s state, viewers may see a transition or a new event after a reconnect. The available guidance does not establish one universal outcome for every scheduled stream, reusable key, or auto-start configuration, so verify the behavior in your own Live Control Room.
YouTube Help states that streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived when content is stopped. Keep this lifecycle behavior in mind when deciding how the broadcast should behave after an interruption; do not assume a reboot creates a seamless continuation of the same event.
