To submit a paper to arXiv, register an author account, prepare the manuscript files in a supported format, and start a submission from your user page. Upload the files, check the processed paper and metadata, complete any endorsement step arXiv requires, accept the submission terms, and finalize. arXiv reviews submissions for suitability before announcement, but that moderation is not peer review and does not guarantee acceptance.

Create or check your arXiv account
Only registered authors can submit. Use arXiv’s Help Contents to reach the current account-registration instructions. If you have coauthored work already on arXiv, review the account and paper-claim guidance as well: claimed papers and an institutional email address may affect whether an automatic endorsement route is available.

Prepare the manuscript files
arXiv’s Submission Guidelines list (La)TeX, AMS(La)TeX, and PDFLaTeX among preferred text formats. Follow the current instructions for your manuscript rather than assuming a PDF alone is always the best submission. For projects with multiple files, the guide describes uploading files individually or bundling them in a ZIP or tar.gz archive; archives can preserve subfolders and include source and ancillary files. Remove unnecessary files and make sure the submission compiles as intended.

Submitting requires agreeing to arXiv’s Submittal Agreement and policies. The agreement grants arXiv an irrevocable license to distribute the work, so make sure you have the legal authority to grant the license you select. Check applicable coauthor, publisher, and other rights before proceeding.

How to submit a paper
- Open a new submission. Sign in and go to your user page. Choose START NEW SUBMISSION, then select the category that best fits the paper and follow the on-screen workflow. Category choice matters because endorsement requirements can depend on category.
- Upload the paper files. Add the prepared source files or archive and follow the current format requirements. If arXiv processes the files, inspect the resulting output rather than assuming that a successful upload means the paper is ready.
- Review the metadata and output. Check the title, abstract, category, author information, and processed files. Correct errors before moving on. Authors are responsible for preparing and checking their submission; arXiv administration cannot provide help with TeX-related issues.
- Complete any endorsement prompt. If arXiv requires endorsement for your account and category, follow the instructions it provides. See the next section for how that process works.
- Accept the required terms and finalize. Review the agreement and policies, confirm you have authority to grant the selected license, and use the final Submit Article action only after checking the submission.
Does every first-time submitter need an endorser?
No. arXiv may require endorsement for a first submission or when submitting to a new category, but it is not a universal precondition that every new author must arrange in advance. The account and category determine whether it is needed. Some authors may qualify for an automatic route, including based on claimed coauthored papers and institutional-email criteria. Otherwise, arXiv’s workflow sends instructions by email when endorsement is required.
If arXiv asks for a personal endorsement, begin the submission in the intended category and use the request email and instructions. arXiv recommends asking someone you know who is knowledgeable about the subject and associated with relevant work. Its guidance requires at least one positive endorsement per endorsement category; do not mass-email potential endorsers. See the current arXiv endorsement guidance for eligibility and steps.

Endorsement is not peer review. It is an eligibility check about whether the submitter is appropriate to the scientific community and whether the work fits a subject area. It does not require the endorser to verify the paper’s correctness or conduct a full review.
What arXiv moderation means
Every submission is subject to moderation before public announcement. arXiv assesses whether a work is suitable for the repository and expects it to be self-contained and of interest, relevance, and value to the disciplines it serves. Moderation is not peer review, and moderators and staff do not provide feedback on submissions.

When will the paper appear?
arXiv’s submission guidance says new submissions received by 14:00 Eastern time are generally made available at 20:00 Eastern under its announcement schedule. These are general schedule details, not a promised release time for an individual paper: moderation and operational factors can affect timing.
