To change Gboard’s language layout, open Gboard Settings > Languages, choose a language and layout, then tap Done. To adjust key size, look in Preferences for Keyboard height if your version includes it. To make the keyboard full-width again, turn off Gboard’s One-handed mode. Android also has a separate screen-level One-handed mode, which moves the top of the display within reach rather than changing the keyboard.
Open Gboard’s settings
Open an app with a text field and bring up Gboard. If the keyboard has a settings gear, tap it. Depending on your device and Gboard version, you may also be able to open the keyboard’s settings through Android Settings: go to Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard > Gboard. Labels and paths can differ on manufacturer-customized Android versions.

If you cannot find the same path, search Android Settings for Gboard or check your device manufacturer’s instructions. Google’s general Gboard guidance notes that device menus can vary. Google’s Gboard settings help describes ways to reach the keyboard settings.

- Open Gboard Settings and tap Languages.
- Select a language you have added. If it is not listed, add it first.
- Choose the layout you want for that language.
- Tap Done.
This changes the keyboard layout used for that language, not the Android device’s system language. Google’s instructions and language options are in its Gboard language settings help.

Make the keyboard bigger or smaller
Open Gboard Settings > Preferences and look for Keyboard height. If the control is present, choose one of the heights shown on your device. Choices such as Tall and Extra tall are described in Google support-community guidance, but they are examples—not a guaranteed set of options on every Gboard version or phone. Google support-community guidance on changing Gboard size does not establish measured dimensions or which height works best for a particular user.
If Keyboard height is missing, the control may not be available in your installed build. Check for Gboard updates or search Settings for Gboard; do not assume that every device has the same menu.

Turn off Gboard’s one-handed keyboard layout
Gboard’s one-handed layout makes the keyboard narrower. A Google support-community answer describes the route as Gboard Settings > Preferences > Layout > One-handed mode; choose Off to return to the standard-width keyboard. The exact labels or location may vary. The same community answer mentions a Resize control in the keyboard’s feature menu as another way to adjust its footprint. When the setting is missing or the keyboard still looks wrong
- Use Android Settings search for Gboard or the setting name; manufacturer-customized menus may use different labels.
- If the keyboard is unexpectedly narrow, check Gboard’s one-handed layout and choose Off if it is enabled.
- If you meant to change the reachable area of the screen rather than the keyboard, look for Android’s One-handed mode instead.
- For menus that do not match these steps, consult your device manufacturer’s documentation. Google notes that instructions and feature availability can differ across supported Android versions and customized devices.
